Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

Please forgive me if I'm being dumb/naive but I just need to know a couple of things before deciding to purchase:

1. I read somewhere that the PS4 won't accept external storage. I don't know if this means that it won't recognize USB for example? I put a lot of films on USB drive and connect to PS3 to watch them, will this not be possible on PS4?

2. I have a USB Hori Arcade stick, will this still work on PS4?

External HDD are not regonised by the PS4 yet, it will come in the future. Not sure about USB Flash drives, the FAQ published by Sony made it sound like these are not supported for external storage either, how ever you can use a USB flash drive to install fireware, so not to sure how that works out.

2- Not sure, they are not supporting DualShock 3 controllers, so probably won't last gen 3rd party controllers either. Who knows though.

Cheers Hal. The HDD thing is vital to me so will wait until I hear more about that.

Just ordered £470 of amazon vouchers to pay off my ps4, didn't want to risk my card being rejected as that has happened before with large payments due to someone stealing money out of my account about 5/6 years ago

Oh, right.

So much disinformation that goes round. From the PS4 manual...

You can copy saved data to a USB storage device that is connected to the PS4™ system. Saved data that you copy can be used as a backup, and you can copy saved data from the USB storage device to another PS4™ system and continue playing a game.

You can select for each game the saved data to copy.

PS4 doesn't give a feck if it's a flash drive or an external HDD, both look the same. The issue is that they don't have a media player ready, that is all, you can use external storage for saves and backups. Games on an external you will never get!

It's not like Sony won't repair or replace them. It's as good as guarentueed that the XBO's will have similar problems down the line.
Yea I know but I'm in no rush and I don't fancy the inconvenience of repairs/replacements/etc...

Playstation 4 Hardware Problems - http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/11/14/broken-playstation-4-systems

A few people (including IGN themselves) are reporting broken PS4's even at this early stage.

All electronics have failure rates, let's not blow this out of proportion. There might be an abnormal problem here and there might not, the joy of being in Europe for launch, we should wait and see, as the hysteria that can be produced on the Internet with a few reports of broken units is ridiculous; you will always get broken units. For example, the typical electronics industry figure for the average of failures of whatever product is between 3 and 5% (consoles are typically higher - XB360 and PS3 simply due to their form factors), the majority of which will happen in year 1, and the bulk of the rest in year 2. So, to put it into perspective, if 1000 PS3s are sold today worldwide, around 80 of them are duds. If someone goes online and tells everyone that this happens to them though, nobody pays the slightest bit of attention. A PS4 does it and all hell breaks loose.

As for the bolded part, that makes more sense. If anything you should get more failures at the start of the life-cycle, not less!

Yea I know, I tend to buy later anyway... the excitement had me thinking about an early purchase but once that dissipated I lost my enthusiasm.

Damn they just hinted at some PS4/Street Fighter thing called 'Hadouken Cabs'... If they announce a Street Fighter game I will HAVE to buy it...

I watched that dude stream whilst trying to "fix" his PS4 last night, if he wasn't trolling for attention then he was the biggest half wit ever. He couldn't troubleshoot his shoe laces being undone, he was incompetent and shouldn't be allowed access to electronical goods. He originally broke his PS4 by unplugging it whilst it was downloading, I'm not sure if he even had the first firmware update installed, but ok he corrupted his HDD, 4 hours of twatting about later and he gets it working so does he do the sane thing and reformat knowing his issues started with corrupt data? Nope he plays Knack for about 10 minutes, then decides to download the exact same thing that corrupted before and it goes off again.

Trying to fix it again he couldn't follow basic instructions, he was incapable of pressing and holding the power button correctly, he did not have the HDMI channel on his TV for a huge chunk of it, oh yeah did I mention he pulled the HDD out whilst it was on......about 15 times? It was totally savable, he was just a complete buffoon. Like we said a while back, a % of consoles will fail out the box, ANY product has that but you can't underestimate dumb people and with live streams and social media if 1 goes, suddenly its a crisis. Nothing to worry about at all right now, that's why they give you warranties.

It is a bit disconcerting that both Kotaku and IGN reported a similar issue. I'll be grabbing mine tomorrow on launch, fingers crossed I don't pay a price for it.

How much does online cost on the PS4 and what do you get for it?

PS+, €50 per year, game discounts, monthly instant game collection for PS3, PS4, PS VITA (two or three games each), cloud storage for saves, early access to demos and betas, etc.

Is the number of games which PS+ users receive each month likely to remain the same, do you think? Also, what are the chances that they will start to throw in lesser games? I know in the past there have been some amazing deals through the PS+ system.

Hopefully the quality of the service isn't reduced now that so many more people will be taking advantage of it.

They've already said that they'll keep their current policy of 12 games available at any given time. The ratio will change though obviously - it'll be 2 PS3, 2 PS4 and 2 PS Vita, I reckon most of the time it's going to be one big title and one indie/older game.
