Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

Picked up a used copy of MLB the show since it hasn't gone on sale since it came out
It's like watching a game on TV
Addicted to the road to the show mode already

So after about 3 years out I’m gonna pick up a PS4 again at the end of the month.

What have I missed in that time that I need to play?

Notable exclusives off the top of my head: Horizon: Zero Dawn, Persona 5, Nioh, God of War, Uncharted 4, Yakuza 6, Detroit: Become Human, Shadow of the Colossus remaster.

God of War
Horizon Zero Dawn + 1 DLC
Witcher 3 + the 2 DLC's
Bloodborne + 1 DLC
That'll sort you out for a few months at least.

Is it worth saving money to buy a PS4 Pro now on sale? I couldn't do it with this current E3 sale, but I'm hoping there's going to be another price drop around the holidays. I was gifted an Xbox One when it first came out and I like the platform, but the PS4 exclusives are the ones I really want. I have limited funds but the FOMO every time I see an awesome Sony exclusive is just killing me.

Only if you have a 4k TV.

That's helpful. So the Pro doesn't pretty up existing 1080p like the One X? If not, then sounds like a regular PS4, which would make it more feasible. I don't have nearly enough money to buy a 4K TV, though I'd like one at some point (probably once 8K comes out and 4K prices drop to be reasonable).

Thanks, that's what I thought. Looks interesting, not sure if it's worth the extra $50-$100 if I don't plan on owning a 4K TV in the next couple of years, though. With regards to exclusives: would you say games like Horizon, Bloodborne (I'm a big fan of Souls 3, if that makes a difference), GoW, etc. are worth getting a whole system for if I've already got a console? I'm on the cusp of adding a Playstation to my setup but for whatever reason can't get over the initial cost of buying a new system.

I would say absolutely, yes. Plus 4K TVs are coming down in price all the time, so you may be in the market a couple of years down the line.

As a Souls fan you owe it to yourself to play Bloodborne. And Nioh.

Cheers for your opinions! I'll keep noodling on this for a while but hopefully I'll be back in this thread asking for game recs (beyond GOW/Horizon/Bloodborne which look phenomenal) within the next 6 months.

They're definitely worth picking up a PS4 for. There's so many good games on the PS4 now, and you can pick one up for a decent price, that it's a no brainer really. And Bloodborne is the best game on the system imo. Masterpiece.

Thanks! Bloodborne I've heard is tremendous. Only ever played Souls III, but I heard it took some of the good parts of Bloodborne and it plays better for it.

See my edit. Nioh.

Nioh is the other one that really caught my eye - thank you for reminding me. I grew up loving Ninja Gaiden and Nioh seemed like the closest thing on modern consoles (I'm just choosing to ignore the very bad installments they've since 2 came out).

It's a fantastic game but it's hard as nails. I've beaten all the Soulsborne games (and platinum'd a few) but Nioh is up there in terms of difficulty.

Also, Nioh 2 was announced at E3. And this, another exclusive (as a Ninja Gaiden fan this should be right up your street). Fast forward to 2.20.

That Tsushima game looks fantastic! I've been jonesing for an A+ samurai or ninja game for a while and that looks like it would really scratch the itch.

Yeah they sped it up. Not to the degree of Bloodborne, but certainly faster than the previous Souls games.

Only if you have a 4k TV.

Ive got a pro and a normal PS4, the Pro smooths out a lot of the chugging that you get with a standard PS4, in something like Warframe the difference between the Pro and the standard is very pronounced, especially with a lot of particle effects.

I can see why some people wouldn't like Nioh but boring is an odd one. Too hard? Sure. Frustrating? Definitely. Obtuse? Yes. Boring? I don't see it.

There's a hole in my bathroom door courtesy of Nioh.

Cheers team. Witcher, God of War and Persona are definitely on my list

What have I missed in that time that I need to play?

Yakuza series.

Start with zero. Yakuza 1 has been remade. 2 remake is coming out in August. 6 is already out.

3,4 and 5 are being remastered and should be releasing here in the next year or so. It really is a great series.

What are the best racing games these days for PS4? Perhaps something that the PS4 Pro can compliment?

There's a lack of real quality racing games right now, but the best is probably Gran Turismo. Graphically it's immense and you can get some solid racing offline/online.

After that you've got the rally games, the new formula 1 game coming out soon and then other older games which never really took off.

Well why don’t Sony come out and say that?

The excuse about kids last year was embarrassing. Phil Spencer did say on giantbomb that he would do it even if the Xbox was selling better. MS still update Minecraft on the PS4.

It’s not only the cross play. It’s how your epic account gets reset.

Things have a funny way of changing especially in a new gen. MS gifted Sony this gen. But I certainly don’t think they’d be doing that next gen especially now they working on their exclusives situation and will be looking to release with the more powerful hardware too with BC. They certainly won’t be coming out with the bullshit they did last time around.
The problem with this theory is that Microsoft haven't been losing the console war just since the new gens were released. They've been losing the console wars since probably around 2009/2010 when Bungie stopped developing halo games. And uncharted 2 was released.

Since the latter part of the 7th generation of consoles, MS has lacked exclusives and Sony has released them in drones.

Not every excluivex has some done well (order 1886) and many of them are similar (3rd person action adventure) but most have been really good.

For MS to come out swinging in 2020 they need to release worthwhile exclusives now so people care enough to buy into their hardware later

Xbox lost a lot of customers over the used game and always online fiasco. Then you had launching a less powerful console and forced Kinect for a more expensive price. That pretty much sealed their fate. The 360 was outselling the PS3 in 2010 and after in America and UK. This generation they lost both those markets by a distance when those two markets in particular were the ones 360 dominated in.

It had nothing to do with exclusives at launch. MS actually had more exclusives during that time. It’s only in the last two years that the PS4 has run away with the exclusives but by that time the so called console war was over anyway. Even if Sony didn’t release those exclusives, Ms would have lost because that’s how bad their start was.

If MS play their cards right then they can comeback. Sony have been releasing a lot of exclusives over the last few years. But they had a quiet spell for the first few years of this gen. Just like with the PS3. They releasing four new games in the next year or so. You imagine the likes of Naughty Dog or sucker punch will have their next games during a few years after the PS5 releases.

MS need to make sure all their studios are ready for the launch of the next Xbox and release good exclusives in the first few years of their new console. It looks like they going to release a more powerful console. I’d be surprised if the PS5 is a lot more powerful than the next Xbox.

I'm surprised you're so optimistic. I don't see anything to make me either want an Xbox now, or prefer one over PS5 for next gen.

Course they lost a lot of players due to the 'Always-online' and 'used game' fiasco. But not that many.... the average buyer (aka mums) probably hadn't even heard about that controversy, and the fanboys knew that Microsoft had gone back on that anyway.

But what Sony did really well is market the PS4 "4theplayers" whilst Microsoft marketed the Xbox as a set top box. As if anyone wants to spend £300 on a sett top box these days.

And Sony picked up a bunch of players by the PS4 being the more powerful console. Best on PS4.

But there is an old truth; software sells hardware.

Want to play Uncharted 4? PS4. Want to play The Last of Us Remastered? PS4. PS4's best selling titles are (in order):

Uncharted 4
Horizon
God of War
Witcher 3
Monster Hunter World
Gran Turismo
FIFA 17
Crash Bandicoot
FF XV
FIFA 18
Killzone Shadow Fall
Bloodbourne
Driveclub
GTA V
Knack
