Phil Jones to United | Transfer to Champions complete

Indeed. Might be the competition he needs for Evans to take his game to the next level. Might be the beginning of the end for him. Smalling and Jones have huge potential and won't be an easy partnership to disrupt.

I still think Evans has the potential to be one of the best centre-halves around but he's stalled the last season and a half or so. I wonder would a season playing first team football for a team like Bolton be a good move for him, just to restore that bit of confidence you only get from playing most games.

They've looked good in the couple of U-21 outings that they've played together too. It'll be great to have two talented defenders both of whom are extremely comfortable with the ball at their feet.

Haha, they've locked the Phil Jones thread on RAWK, most likely due to the fact it would have quickly descended into mass suicidle dribble.

Good singing.

the lad can play in midfield. Had a cracking game there against City this year that i went too (don't ask).

"At this stage, looks like no Utd players going as part of Jones deal. £16m escape clause met."

I felt he would have benefited by going out on loan for the 2nd half of last season to get that confidence back and also that West Ham game out of his memory.

I know he can play in midfield but I don't think he's good enough to play regularly in midfield for a top class side.

In my opinions he's a defender and that's where his future lies.

Is he is the squad for the U-21 tournament?

If so, will be interesting to see the likes of him, Smalling, Cleverley and Wellbeck play for England.

Do people expect him to regularly play in midfield for us? Have we signed a utility player, one for the future or new midfielder though? Or all three?!

I am very surprised by this.

Mark Ogden claims no United player is going the other way:

Seems like a decent deal. Fergie apparently wanted Jones at United next summer, but Liverpool made a move now so Fergie had to as well.

Do people not realise the fact that he will be a future Hargreaves? Hopefully minus the legs.

I do not believe for a second this kid is being bought as a defender, not long term anyway.

Nah. Fergie won't sign anyone who just wants to arse around.

I'm happy with this one. Very promising young player.

Average age of our squad will plummet next season, with 3 of our 4 oldest players retiring, Hargreaves gone and us looking pretty likely to sign 2 under-21 stars.

This will be one of United's best signings of the summer.

The lad oozes potential. One of the best young defenders I've witnessed over the last few years. He's also very classy on the ball.

Indeed. Actually 16 million seems a bit of a steal. His ability to play in midfield is an added bonus.

I've only seen him play properly once or twice. I remember when he first came into the team he played very well against Chelsea. He did well against us recently too.

Still, surprised a bit by this one.

Does this mean we would have to forgo one of our transfer targets this season? Not that I am unhappy with the signing of Jones but I am curious if Sir Alex had plans for Jones in midfield or if we would sign someone else this season if we had not signed Jones.

Interesting that, barring injuries/sales/form we have our centre-halves sorted for the next decade. The full back positions look to be well stocked with the Da Silvas and in Nani, Valencia and possibly Young we'd be well looked after out wide. Then Rooney, Hernandez, Welbeck and maybe Macheda up front.

That has the look of a very strong spine of players going forward. And I've probably forgotten people.

12:45 We've spoken to our communications department and we are assured that there is nothing to announce at present.

-----------De Gea--------

Rafael - Smalling-Jones-Fabio

Young--Tunnicliffe--Pogba--Nani

----Rooney--Hernandez-----

Code:
                 de Gea

Rafael Smalling Jones Fabio

         Fletcher Carrick
              Sneijder
 Valencia Sanchez
               Rooney

It's happening.

SSN wouldn't report it as they have done.

The official site are just waiting until it's all official.

It's widely accepted that our three best players in our youth squad are Tunnicliffe, Morrison and Pogba, all central midfielders. We're not looking too bad.

Great signing!

Fergies building a team for the future and with Rafael Fabio Smalling Evans and Jones we've got the shape of our defence for a decade post Rio/Vidic

Awesome stuff

Yeah, I agree, but aren't they cheeky bastards? "Nothing to announce at present", offering the tantalising clue that there might be something in the near future.

Cracking signing if it goes through, he is a good prospect indeed. If Smalling is in the Ferdinand mould then this lad is truelly in the image of a Vidic. Exciting future partnership right there.

Also I think he won't have to be named in the 25 man squad for the next 3 seasons. Which is quite amazing.
