Well apparently it is £16m, so the clause must be true!

Also:

On Phil Jones / #mufc, Blackburn were told to expect a Utd bid as soon as Lpool made their move. Fergie huge admirer of him.

Fergie must of got wind of Liverpools bid and pipped them to it.

If this is as close as they are suggesting why is it not on Sky Sports News?

Are SSN still repeating the same hour over and over?

Haven't wacthed it much during the day since I was a student but that used to be the case.

He's not going to get a lot of playing time, and I dont know what this means for Evans.

Evans will have to compete with Smalling/Jones for 3-4th defender place. Meanwhile he can cover the left rear flank where Fabio has yet to master the technique of how to play the entire 90 minutes without getting crocked.

Great news. Really rate this lad.

I think we will also sell Varane and maybe loan him to a French club for a season. This has previously been rumoured. If not, I think we might loan out Evans for a season.

Either way, I don't think Rio will last beyond 3 years at best. This is good for the long term future of the club.

I don't think it signals the end for Evans. Maybe Jones is going to be the 'bite' people were looking for in midfield? I think he fits the Fergie mould well for that type of centre mid- He's defensive minded but can certainly play ball.

Could possibly mean the end of any Jack Rodwell interest.

Just seems crazy to spend that amount of money for a 4th choice centre half.

We dont need him, Smalling and Evans are good young CB's. But then again, it's not my money.

He is a good young player mind. But we have much more underlying issues to sort out in other positions before spunking £16m on a 4th choice CB.

Almost certainly.

Does Jones have the footballing ability to play in midfield at the highest level though?

Bit more info on it:

#mufc interest in Jones dates back 18 months, but Fergie wanted to wait til next summer. Lpool move has forced their hand.

Makes sense really, shame we had to rush into the deal, but hopefully it doesn't change our current summer plans.

I don't think 16m is too much for a player of his talent. I'm quite delighted, although I sympathise with Evans. One poor season and the trust is gone?

Jones is only 19 though and could be moulded into a DM as some have said.

Oh & now Sunderland have the cash they're saying they could be in for Jonny Evans. He did have a good couple of seasons there.

Not everything is about the short term. Fergie has spoken countless times about building a legacy for when he finally pops off. Rio, Vidic, Brown and O'Shea are all 29+ and coming to an end of their careers. Signing Jones isn't about filling a gap now, it's about future security. I'm certain we wouldn't have done this now if not for Liverpool's interest, but that doesn't change the fact he and Smalling could be our CB partnership for the next 10+ years.

I suspect he'll move ahead of Evans in the pecking order, and may even result in Evans moving on for good. I think SAF would have preferred to leave Jones at Blackburn for another year, but Liverpool forced our hand - but Rio has been an ageing injury worry for a couple of seasons, Evans had a poor season - so signing a young CB isn't that bizarre

That's the fee you'll pay for a promising England U21 defender. Now, considering that Gaz has retired, Wes will soon leave, Rio injury are going to get worse and Evans has yet to prove that he's not a 1 yr wonder then it made sense to add a defender to the team. However I would have preferred if we spent the dosh on a goalkeeper and central midfielder.

Couldn't post before, but I have Sky Sports webpage in view at work.

Watched it saying he was on his way to Liverpool, all betting suspended, and then watched it suddenly change to saying he was at Carrington.

To the many superior posters on here who sneer at 'transfer muppets' - YOU CAN feck OFF. A fantastic laugh and a bigger lift than any drug I've taken (and I have).
PROUD TO BE A MUPPET.

Now it just needs to be true.

Looks like that phrase will be this summer's redcafe mentalist slogan of choice.

Honestly, do people actually think the transfer deals should be closed in order of importance? That's insane.

If anything, the CM we need will be signed last - as it's likely to be a higher profile, more expensive player, with all the haggling that involves.

I think so but I had him down as one to fail in Solius's scouting thread so I should probably shut up! Proved me well wrong.....

I think its more of a case of Jones being too good to let go to a rival.

Smalling-Evans and Jones is a fantastic pool of young center halves. And as people say Jones can play as a midfielder.
