That's the fee you'll pay for a promising England U21 defender. Now, considering that Gaz has retired, Wes will soon leave, Rio injury are going to get worse and Evans has yet to prove that he's not a 1 yr wonder then it made sense to add a defender to the team. However I would have preferred if we spent the dosh on a goalkeeper and central midfielder.

This still has to happen or it'll certainly be a strange one.

SAF knows better than us what areas need strengthening, so I'm sure it's all in hand.

Do people not realise the fact that he will be a future Hargreaves? Hopefully minus the legs.

I do not believe for a second this kid is being bought as a defender, not long term anyway.

I don't think it signals the end for Evans. Maybe Jones is going to be the 'bite' people were looking for in midfield? I think he fits the Fergie mould well for that type of centre mid- He's defensive minded but can certainly play ball.

Could possibly mean the end of any Jack Rodwell interest.

I don't think he's a replacement for Evans either - he can play in a few different positions and Rio's fitness is more than suspect. He could well get a few games in midfield. Still expect Evans to be here next season and hopefully stepping up his game.

Also agree that it probably means we won't be signing Rodwell - they are different style players but play the same positions.

SSN (as in the tv version, not just the website) have also just said that Phil Jones is at Carrington.

Pretty chuffed with this one.

Looks like that phrase will be this summer's redcafe mentalist slogan of choice.

Honestly, do people actually think the transfer deals should be closed in order of importance? That's insane.

If anything, the CM we need will be signed last - as it's likely to be a higher profile, more expensive player, with all the haggling that involves.

Because this summer it's had more importance than others. Of course transfer deals are not done in order of importance, if they were, there would be a mass suicide in the transfer forum after this.

Mentioned that in my post, seems a lot more likely to me than some very expensive competition for the defense.

I really like what I've seen of him, but why are we spending big on players we don't actually need?

De Gea aside obviously.

I'm guessing it's more what others have said about us watching him and being forced to make a move before we wanted to.

Thread title should be changed to something like 'Having a medical'.

Played really well agianst us in the PL game recently...wonder if that was the message SAF was looking for.

Probably right about the Rodwell deal. I can't see us buying two young players...one will probably be an established international/senior

that's true

Well, it's 100% Fergie type of signing, unlike all this Sneijder/Sanchez rumours.

I take it he was too good to miss out - otherwise I see no reason for us to buy another CB seeing as we're well covered in that area. Unless of course Fergie sees him as a DM.

Same as Rooney, if it means paying more to beat other clubs to his signing so be it.

I'd say it's squeaky bum time for Johnny Evans at the moment. Though Jones being able to play in midfield might mean we'll hold onto him for when Rio packs it in.

I still think we won't sign a CM. Especially not a high-profile one, if we do actually spend 18m on De Gea, 16m on Young and 16m on Jones. That's 50m right there, I'd be surprised if we spent more than that. We may take a punt on a cheap youngster with potential. Or Charlie fecking Adam.

So, just to clarify...

Henderson was £20m.
Jones will be £16-18m.

I'll take the latter, thank you very much.

Heh, did the same thing to poor Kenny with Keane........lets hope it all turns out as well as that one did!

 Don't you dare!

That is one signing I hope to god Liverpool make, just so that my anal clenching ceases with regards to the thought of bring him here.

That's the one aspect I don't like about their Henderson deal: it has made a move for Charlie Adam less likely.

Fantastic, our summer muppetry has begun then. Hopefully he'll rise to the challenge and competes with Smalling the coming years while they both gradually becomes integral parts of our defence.

Well I was beginning to wonder why 900+ people were viewing the transfer forum. Thought Sanchez had signed for Barca or something. Good news. English, check, Talented, check, Young, Check.

Good that we are looking to replace our English departees(Hargreaves, Scholes, Gaz) with other english players. Keeps the spine of the team strong.

It's a great signing, the fact that he can play as a DM is a big plus. We basically got a great young defender and a replacement for Hargreaves in a way, all in one.

Great stuff. :) RAWK is not happy:

Well that's it for me then. I've just ordered the bird to head out the front garden and perform Seppuku to convey my disgust at Jones' shameful disrespect to Liverpool FC.

Indeed. Might be the competition he needs for Evans to take his game to the next level. Might be the beginning of the end for him. Smalling and Jones have huge potential and won't be an easy partnership to disrupt.

If we come up against Barcelona we know where we can stick him then
