Phil Jones to United | Transfer to Champions complete

It won't mean anything for Evans if SAF sees him as a future midfielder.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jones wasn't on the cards this summer. But Liverpool and Arsenal's moves probably hastened our interest.

He's quality.

De Gea-Smalling and Jones. Could be our back 3 for the next 15 years.

This was posted on Twitter earlier on:

Phil Jones' mum has just advised he has signed for United for 18mil this am. Not made up I can assure you.

Seem's like that was true. £18mil though

Surprised about this one. Actually, shocked. I don't think it QUITE signals the end for Evans, but it'll be a battle and whoever is best will win.

I could see the need for another centerhalf with Rio's injuries and Brown's expected departue. But I think that if this deal is true and it is in the region of 15m or so, we must also be thinking about his ability to play midfield.

Wont be 18m upfront though will it. Anyway, not bothered. Good to see the club spending big.

His signing doesn't mean the end of Evans, Jones can play midfield also.

Jones set for United switch

Skysports.com has learnt Blackburn Rovers defender Phil Jones is at Manchester United having a medical as he closes on a move to Old Trafford.

The in-demand centre-half is also a target for Arsenal and Liverpool but it would appear United have stolen a march on their Premier League rivals in a transfer race that could be concluded soon
.
Liverpool were thought to be the early front-runners for the England Under 21 international but Sir Alex Ferguson, with a healthy transfer chest of his own, is set to land a player many believe will be a mainstay for the senior national side for years to come.

It is understood United have offered the player a five-year contract, despite widespread reports he was to undergo a medical at Liverpool's training ground.

The 19-year-old was supposed to travel to Denmark on Wednesday with the England Under 21s for this summer's European Championship.

Could this provoke a Sunderland bid for Jonny Evans? They rated him highly there and (I think) his wife is from the North East.

Have to say Evans looked the real deal when he first broke through but seems to have stagnated. Would like to see him stay to be honest in the hope that he can recapture previous form.

As an aside - great show of intent from United. No mucking about. Hopefully the other transfers will be tied up just as quickly.

I wonder if this is another Rooney situation. Once Liverpool's interest solidified then Fergie wasn't willing to let Jones go.

I suspect you're right.

Could see more than the 3 players Fergie discussed coming in - especially where his hand is being forced by other clubs getting involved.

Seems the fee relates to a "buy out" clause. Could have turned into an auction without it.

I'm not keen on spending a lot of money on players from struggling teams as you can get the big fish small pond scenario. Still, I'll back Fergie on it, but hope that this doesn't mean we won't essentially replace Hargreaves.

Jones lives 5 minutes away from me too.

Exactly. I wouldn't have thought that Jones was the No. 1 priority this year. However we just couldn't let him go to Liverpool or any other club.

Jones is a stupid m*nc cnut and I never rated him anyway.

Onwards and upwards!

£18m is a bit steep.
Classy player. A CB and a natural defensive midfielder. I don't see how it affects Evans anyways. Much like a replacement for Hargreaves and Brown combined.

Good signing

It's great that Jones & Smalling can learn from Rio & Vidic. I'm sure that's the long term plan for those 2 to take over.

Bit of a surprise but I'd be really pleased if we sign him. Still a bit dubious though, will only believe it when (and if) the club announce it.

If this is as close as they are suggesting why is it not on Sky Sports News?
