there was talk he may go to Liverpool.

lets hope we get him first.

Well if hes smart hed stay well away from Liverpool a club well and truly in the doldrums, they have no European football whatsoever to offer him either, in fact to tell the truth they offer nothing more than Blackburn in terms of testing yourself seeing as both clubs will be competing in the same comps next season., if it comes down to a choice of us or Liverpool it would be an easy one id imagine.

that would be a compliment to Jones. O'Shea may be seen as a journeyman by some. But he has done a great job for us across the backline.

Injuries have limited him quite a bit recently. Hope he gets some games next season.

Agreed, I didn't mean it negatively, A versatile defensive player is as valuable as a versatile attacking player.

I rate Jones highly, future England CB in the making.

If we can land him cheap... 16m isn't bad... Only 4m more than Smalling mind you...

I'd take that in a jiffy and we'll have 3 of the best young CB's waiting to line up for Rio/Vidic which would be great... Thats another 10 years sorted.

jones is one of the few young players out there, whether english or not that i will be very happy to see us sign, even for something close to 20m.

from the few matches i have seen, he just looked like a fat john terry (but then again john terry is pretty good, if we are being objective)

I prefer Varane considering Jones asking price. I rate Jones but a new central midfielder is more important.

I haven't seen much of Varane, would ask kouroux but Jones being English and his debut in the PL would mark him at almost 15m if you consider Smalling's pricetag, he looked a bit more dominant and his price tag would have been a bit more if he weren't injured.

Varane looks the player from what you've seen ?

I haven't seen much of Varane but he is more of a value signing to me. If United bring in a new young defender its to replace Brown. £15 million on Jones, £15 milion on Young and then De Gea will cost a fair share. That's almost £50 million spent and not even on one real central midfielder. I think Jones is going to Liverpool anyway though as a Carragher replacement.

It seems to have gone very quiet on this.Probably means we'll sign him;)

Don't think this Mirror story can be based in fact.

I don't see why Jones would chose to join United where he would immediately be behind Vidic and a fit Rio in the pecking order and in competition with Smalling to be the first back up player - Evans still at the club to, though he needs to get his game going again.

Long term I think Smalling and Jones will be the England CBs, and I think they could be a great partnership for United too if they were paired together, but I just don't see how a move to United now would make sense for Jones, when he could likely get a move to Liverpool or Arsenal and first choice football too.

You've not read my post properly have you.

No need to be patronising.

I read one line with you saying we need a signing to replace Neville. Can't understand why when we have 2 young fullbacks.Personally can't see it happening;it's not an area we need to strengthen.

Can you read that?

Don't rate the Da Silvas then?

I said it earlier this year and i'll say it again.

We don't need him. Why would we want 5 cb's in the squad? The only reason we'd consider buying him is if we think Evans isn't upto the task of replacing Vidic.

Even if that was the case, Vidic isn't going anytime soon, Rio won't retire this year, Smalling and Evans both need games.

Neville retiring and Brown possibly leaving won't harm us with our squad depth. We still have 4 cb's and 2 choices for both LB and RB and alot of our players are versatile enough to play in several positions.

Bullshit story imo.

I'd doubt it

Unless Fergie does rate him and is forced to buy him earlier than he was planning due to other teams interest in the lad

The Da Silva twins are already part of the squad.

We'll need to sign a defender if Fergie wants to keep the balance of the squad the same and I believe that's exactly what he will do.

Whether it will be Phil Jones is another thing entirely.

I will be gutted if Phil Jones signs for the Scousers, he is an excellent talent.

Rumour he's having a medical at Liverpool. Annoying if he is, top player, great potential.

i've never seen him, but something tells me he doesn't have busquets technical ability. Xavi recently said busquets is the best one touch player at barca.

Yeh he said he is the best passer in the world over 10 yards/metres or something like that.

Jones can no way play that role IMO. He doesn't have the control or movement for that - defensively yes, but I don't think his ball retention is anywhere near the level required.. It's not even his best positon though, so its a moot point.

I really hope we get this guy.

I think he has the potential to play equally well at the back or in midfield. Given the injuries we have had in defence in the last 2 seasons I think he would be an excellent signing.

£16m is far too much imo, but that's MUFC tax for you.

Not quite. That's more like an inflation price for being English.

P.Jones will become an excellent player. His positional sense and tackling ability for his age is already outstanding..that's half the fight done for defenders. He'll develop into one of the world's best.

He might consider it because he can also play DM, a position which OH left available... Just a possibility though.
