Strange one. To buy Pique now you'd be looking at smashing the record paid for a centre half, and then some.

Except Pique really isn't that good.... It's amazing what the best protecting central midfielders in the world do for you on a club and international scale. There is a very good reason saf didn't hold on to him when he could have.

This signing doesn't bode well for Evans starting place in the United line up. Brown is as good as gone though.

English players always cost over the odds. I'm surprised we are getting him this cheaply to be honest.

So we've got Smalling, Evans and Jones now fighting for the "If one of Rio and Vidic is injured" position in the team.

I'm all for squad depth, but could we not get a central midfielder to replace one of the two that have just left?

Is it confirmed that we couldn't sign a midfielder? Terrible shame, if true.

I'm hopeful there's still time.

The only fans that should be complaining about the price are Blackburn supporters. Think this will look a bargain in 6 years time. This guy is top drawer.

Young on the other hand...

Jones might do what Rodwell was supposed to (if the rumors are to be believed)
I'm sure he has played in a 2 man midfield for Blackburn
Fergie might play him in midfield

Could you imagine if it were Rio and Vidic at the back for them? I dont think they'd concede more than 12 goals in the league all season.

I hope not! He's a natural defender..

True, but whilst Vidic and Ferdinand are still fit he'll have to take a back seat. Not to mention Evans and Smalling, who would have to be ahead of him (by virtue of being at the club longer) at this stage - though I do think he'll quickly overtake both of them.

In the meantime he could definitely do a job in the midfield for United.

It's hardly a bad thing is it? Plus at the end of the season Smalling got some time at RB, Evans at LB, Jones can play midfield, and Rio is sadly pretty injury prone these days, and both twins seem to be a bit fragile and unable to string 5 games together. Only Vidic is likely to start every week, as even Evra is under serious pressure from Fabio.

Jones' transfer hasn't been confirmed and I'm not counting any chickens until the club say it's done, but we could be in the fantastic position of having a very flexible and mostly very young defense consisting of variations of Rafael, Fabio, Smalling, Jones, Evans, Vidic, Evra, Rio, O'Shea and Brown (if he stays). I'm pretty delighted with that.

I must say this new thread title format we've had over the last month or two is great.

I'd usually see a thread like this and get a little excited, only to be let down upon entering.

But now, I can get myself all wet by the confirmation in the title alone, and let everybody bask in its glory when I get inside.

Ecstatic !!

Wonderful signing, I rate him very highly and watched a few games where he looked class...

His most wonderful asset is that at 19 he looks well built like Vidic but has the confidence to drive and dribble up the field too.

He's going to be our definite future... 17m will look like a steal just like what we got for Smalling.

I think we've just got two of Englands future CB's, not that I care about England but he will become one of the best CB's in Europe if he progresses and under SAF who finally has sort out our defense, he'll grow from strength to strength with us.

Rooney acknowleges Jones quality

The Post | Rooney acknowleges Jones quality

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney appears to have welcomed the prospect of Blackburn defender Phil Jones moving to Old Trafford.

Jones is reportedly undergoing a medical with the Barclays Premier League champions after speculation linking him with a number of clubs.

Liverpool and Arsenal were also thought to be interested in signing the 19-year-old England Under-21 international.

It is thought a deal for Jones, who has made a huge impression at Ewood Park since his debut in March last year, would cost United £15-£17m.

Rooney wrote on Twitter: “Phil Jones is a good young English player. One of the toughest defenders I played against last season. Can play midfield too.”

Rooney was quick to add, however, that he has no knowledge of whether a deal is imminent or not.

He added: “I don’t know if Phil Jones is signing for us, just saying he is a good player that’s all. I haven’t got a clue if he is signing or not.”

Jones had been due to join the England Under-21 squad today to travel to Denmark for the European Championship.

He would face stiff competition for a first-team place at United from the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling.

Do you think I was closer with £100m out, or do you think it will lie somewhere in the middle?

Nah, not a chance of £100m net in my opinion, though I admit I was completely wrong, and there wasn't much chance of below £20m net spending all along when we lost so many players (Scholes, Hargreaves, van der Sar, most likely Brown as well, and I've probably forgot about someone as well). De Gea and Jones will cost £30m+ together, and I think we'll still get Young eventually, and MAYBE a midfielder but I wouldn't count on that if we cannot get our top targets.

Maybe Jones was signed to play in the midfield? He did spend most of this last season there.

If that was the case i'm sure he would have probably picked Arsenal instead of us.

How do people rate him to a 20 year old Rio Ferdinand that went to Leeds? Similar figures.

Think Jones will take the Hargo role in midfield until Rio calls it a day.

I'm fecking ecstatic about this signing. Terrific player.

There's always that Finnish youth international. Looked class on loan at Eastbourne Borough.

We will probably end up spending more than £60m this summer. £15 for Jones, £17 for De Gea, and £17 for Young. That's without signing a quality midfielder.

I can't really say Ive recalled him playing before so I can't say much about him except he looks 19 going 45 years old.

Think that impresses me about this future centre half partnership is the size of Smalling and Jones they both look massive, strikers are going to be shit scared of them in a few seasons.

5'11 ... Not too bad if he's good in the air and Smalling and Vidic are anyway. But still not that "massive"

Jones has an ogre-like head. Would love to see a picture of him and Rooney next to each other.
