Except Pique really isn't that good.... It's amazing what the best protecting central midfielders in the world do for you on a club and international scale. There is a very good reason saf didn't hold on to him when he could have.

This signing doesn't bode well for Evans starting place in the United line up. Brown is as good as gone though.

Sir Alex said when Barcelona came in that he'd do everything he could to keep Pique. He said he'd play a certain amount of games and wasnt keen to let him go at first. But it was Pique's hometown club coming back in for him eventually he had to conceed that it was going to happen

We didnt let him leave because he wasnt good, we tried to keep him because he is good. We just didnt have much of a chance of being successful

Damn. Would have loved for him to have signed for us... I guess we do have Bartley who is of a similar age and style of play, and has all the Rangers fans raving about him - which is some consolation.

This is a double blow for us too, as I highly doubt Blackburn will be willing to part with Samba if Arsenal do come in for him again.

Sambal is great! I love Sambal. :)

You can have him if you want. You just need to outbid Sunderland

Well it's clear that I don't rate Jones at all, but everyone wanted him, so I'm clearly bound to be wrong on this.

And O'Shea gets a lot of stick on the Caf - he's probably one of the most useful players you have.

I think your opinion on Jones was what earned you your previous tag-line, wasn't it?

 Yeh, I don't even understand my current one.

All I said about Jones was that I didn't think he'd ever become top class, and that he was destined to be a mid-table defender. Evidently, that particular prophesy has been proven to be wrong, but we'll see if he makes it at United. As I say, I would have suspected he wouldn't, but everyone wanted him. They can't all be wrong.

Including your manager too. The players we've both been in for haven't proved to be too bad so far.

Sheasy gets stick from idiots.

Well precisely. I understood all the hype around Smalling, but not around Jones. For England's sake, I hope he turns out alright.

I was actually the other way around. Saw Smalling only a few times and he looked dodgy as feck, but now looks brilliant. Jones has impressed ever since I first saw him, he's dogged and determined but has a bit of class on the ball which sets him apart from most other typical English centre backs.

I have so much faith in Fergie signing centre-backs, we've never really had a player which has flopped in that position.

I thought it would be quite the opposite, Smalling had very little top level experience and IIRC was making quite a few mistakes at Fulham. Whereas Jone had a great season playing the majority of Blackburn's games.

Jones has stood out far more whenever I saw him for Blackburn then Smalling did for Fulham. You could see the potential in Smalling but Jones looked far more mature and his performances were far superior.

The fee seems high, but for a 19-year-old it really isn't. If he works out he will be in his peak for the next ten years, meaning we will spend £0 signing new players for that position during that time. Also he's bound to be on low wages for the first few years.

Fair enough. I think Smalling scored an OG on debut, which obviously didn't go down all that well. Young players always make mistakes, especially in average teams. He still does make a few errors, but he's got better players around him to cover them up.

Jones has never struck me as being in the same class, but it's clear the vast majority of people disagree with me here. I personally don't think Jones has done all that amazingly well this season, but the quality of his side has hardly helped.

If you failed to rate Jones you really need to have a word with yourself Al...

Even a few slaps.

I'd agree with that, the little I've seen of Jones has been very impressive.

At least it seems Wenger has finally realized he has a problem to address, and if he held talks with Jones it shows he's prepared to stump up the cash.

I honestly have not followed Jones or know much about him.But SAF rarely if ever gets it wrong with defenders. So lets see how he does.

when will the deal be announced then we can move on to other targets?

No one answered my question, and I am too lazy to read all the pages. Also I like hearing the sound of my keyboard.

I must admit I don't really know a lot about this guy. Can anyone give me a quick rundown of him? Is he worth the fee?
