Future back 5?

-------------------De Gea---------------

Rafael-----Smalling-------Jones-----Fabio

Think that impresses me about this future centre half partnership is the size of Smalling and Jones they both look massive, strikers are going to be shit scared of them in a few seasons.

Nah rubbish.

That's why we paid £17m a year earlier than we originally wanted to because Pool, Arse and Spurs were all going for him too.

£17m?! That's madness.

Pool, Arse and Spurs are all losers and bottlers though, doesn't bode well.

£16m?? Really overpriced. We sold Pique for £5m.

That's a stupid way to look at it. Pique was getting no game time and didn't look to be as good as Evans. Jones is 19, being chased by every big club and regarded as one of Englands biggest prospects. Completely different situations.

Have people been sat in a sealed bunker for the last 5 years? The transfer market back when we sold Pique and Rossi and signed the likes of Ronaldo, Vidic and Evra is completely different.

I don't understand why people keep on referencing a transfer fee as being good / bad, based on how much a different player cost years ago.

Got to love some of the comments by the experts on this board. SAF and his team watch every game and track players for years, just trust their decisions. We had similar silly comments twelve months ago when Smalling and Hernadez were signed, and that didn’t work out too badly.

I don't see the problem with the price tag. We've obviously wanted this kid for a while but were holding out. Liverpool came in and we got him before they could. Paying the asking price was very necessary in order to do so.

People forget that Smalling was £10m despite barely even getting a game for Fulham. Everyone thought that was madness last year as I recall.

Not saying he is a bad player. Just saying SAF keeps stressing about value. Don't know if this is value tbh.

Damn. Would have loved for him to have signed for us... I guess we do have Bartley who is of a similar age and style of play, and has all the Rangers fans raving about him - which is some consolation.

This is a double blow for us too, as I highly doubt Blackburn will be willing to part with Samba if Arsenal do come in for him again.

great signing and a very reasonable price given that he's English, only 19 and one of the best prospects in the league.

I think thats a fantastic price for a player who is English and proven quality in the Premiership. To have two excellent current England Under 21's centre backs in our team next season and going forward is only a good thing.

Surely the fact that Arsenal (and Liverpool too?) had met the buy-out clause too says something. I mean the fact that at least two clubs were willing to spend that much on a teenager speaks volumes.

Its not that much money if you break it down into amount of years serving the club. He stays at the club for 10 years then 16million means feck all.

He isn't overpriced.

I think quite a lot of clubs would pay £15m for Evans and Jones has had a much more impressive season.

Hope this is true cos a scouser friend has been giving me grief about Henderson preferring Liverpool to us.

Just show him that picture of Owen lifting the Premiership. There really is no possible response to that.

So we've got Smalling, Evans and Jones now fighting for the "If one of Rio and Vidic is injured" position in the team.

I'm all for squad depth, but could we not get a central midfielder to replace one of the two that have just left?

Seriously,

Why can't people understand that just because we've signed a CB doesn't mean we aren't going to sign a central midfielder or two?

Jones is a cracking talent and could possibly be the lynch pin of our defense for years and yeas. Plus he CAN also play in midfield. Did people really want us to lose him to our other rivals?

Well what we seemed to get into the habit when the Glazers joined was firming our transfer strategy - signing players cheapest first i.e. going for the cheapest players and then progressively more expensive players in the season.

rather than going for expensive players and then inflating the price of the cheapest players as clubs would say - you signed xxx from xxx so our player is worth xxx.

We seem to have deals there for De Gea and Jones for £16 - £18m so let's hope we can sign some more attacking players for more than that!

Is the summer over?

Maybe Jones was signed to play in the midfield? He did spend most of this last season there.
