All the complaining in here is nonsensical.

Yes Jones is a liability and yes we can do better, but there are a lot of sensible reasons for him to sign up...

English quota
*5th/ 6th choice CB with versatility to cover DM or RB in an emergency. Anyone saying youth could fill this slot is heavily underestimating the step up in experience required. It's better for youth to go on loan and step up once ready.
*Good chance to profit on this rather than lose for nothing or use as bargaining chip in exchange
*Plenty of experience to share
*Humble good dressing room personality
*Over inflated market means a replacement would be vastly expensive just as a backup
*Too much other business to do

If he had a contract would I say sell him this summer...yes, but when his contract is running out we need to renew then look to sell at the right time.

Wow 5 another 5 years.

I think this is ok. Nobody wants him as a first choice pick but if we clear out some others and bring in some quality, we should progress to the point where Jones is 3rd/4th choice. I think that's an ok position for us, and Jones, to be in.

So he gets a testimonial during this contract? :D

.United certainly know how to give everyone a lift, announce DDG, Pogba even Herrera? No Phil Jones and Ashley Young's one year contract.

United planning contract announcement before Paris Saint-Germain
United could announce Ashley Young’s contract renewal before the Champions League encounter with Paris Saint-Germain.

The MEN reported last week Young, 33, was expected to sign a new one-year contract, having entered the last five months of his current contract.

Sources close to the deal say United could confirm Young’s extension on Monday, possibly before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s pre-match press conference.

Excellent post.
To welcome the clubs decision to give Jones a new contract does not mean that one thinks he is the future at CB. We have other things that has to be addressed firstly this summer. Who will essentially be our 5th choice CB is not a priority. If we do this and it makes financial and regulatory sense it is something positive.
We should bring Tuanzebe back (even if he seems even more injury-prone than Jones himself) and we already have Dalot in the fold. Those two in the defensive part of the squad will be plenty when it comes to youth next season defensively. Jones or no Jones going forward can be re-evaluatedin the summer of 2020.

This is an absolute tragedy.

What is happening to us. We’re literally rewarding mediocrity and the worrying thing is we’re increasing their wages which is gonna put off any potential buyers.

Jones and Smalling are Everton quality. They have no business playing for Manchester United and we will never win any league titles as long as they’re starting regular games.

Same goes for Young, Shaw and Valencia. All need to be shipped out ASAP and replaced with quality players

Pep shipped out Zabaleta, Clichy, Kolarov and Sagna. We would be offering them all new contracts. He replaced them with Walker (50m), Danilo (42m) and Mendy (50m)... That’s the difference. We should be buying the likes of Ricardo Pereira, Koulibaly and Alex Sandro. We should be giving those wages to those guys.

It's pointless having someone as backup when it's a toss up if they're going to be injured. Massive waste of money.

I thought this what a sick joke.....:wenger::wenger:

I want to know who's responsible for this joke of a decision and we can't blame Mourinho this time :nono::rolleyes:

I am seriously interested in how you think we would make our homegrown quota next season if we get rid of Jones, Smalling, Young and Shaw at the same time? Not to mention long term.

Excellent news, he's arguably been our best outfield player since SAF retired.

This is an interesting decision. I don't think it merits some of the outrage seen on the last few pages though. As I see it I think we need to have 4 reliable centre backs, which allows space for a youth centre back as 5th choice. My preferred 5 for next season are: new signing, Lindelof, Smalling, Jones plus Axel.

I think Smalling and Jones are both better than Bailly, who is an extremely erratic defender. Maybe the club are planning on loaning Axel out again, but I wouldn't personally want that.

I think if Rojo was to get a new contract then that really would merit outrage.

If he stays here for 5 more years, do people think we might seem him score a goal for Utd?

it's been 5 years since his last one.
Sure as hell we will see him scoring goals against United, if he stays here for another 5 years.

Didn't Rojo get a new one within the last year or so?

I dont understand folks trying to defend this terrible decision.

(1) Decent squad option?
A player who is hardly fit can not be a decent squad option;or a player who makes a kindergarten mistake once every 5 games can not be a solid squad option.

(2) What homegrown quota?

If we are to fill our home grown quota we can can sign Aaron wan-bissaka at right back;have Axel as a backup CB.Aaron can fill the home grown space Jones occupied.

(3) Resigned to resale?

If we wanted to sale;we would have given him a 2+1 year kind of deal.It is easier to sale a player on a shorter contract than on a longer one.Secondly;having him on a longer contract puts him in a stronger position than the club.

(4) Have you heard Jones' transfer rumors?

We have heard transfer rumors of Bailly ;Smalling;Damien. etc. There is a reason there are no transfer rumuors about Jones. If you think smaller clubs will queue for Jones because he is a Manchester United player;English etc you need to think again.Everybody knows that he is Injury and error prone which is a big risk .Small clubs may not have the financial clout but it does not mean they are being run as badly as we are being run.

Tuanzebe should be taking his place as 5th choice CB.
Tuanzebe will replace Rojo in the squad at CB IMO. The Jones contract means the end of Rojos career... EDIT at United I mean.... I am pretty sure.
I also want Tuanzebe in the squad next year but there are some issues with him as well. He has been injured way more than Jones this and last season. Jones injury record is actually not that bad these last two seasons.

Not a terrible decision, provided we still go in for a top CB and develop young prospects with s lot more potential such as Tunazebe and Fosu-Mensah. Jones is an adequate squad man but has never shown consistent high level performances or maintained fitness. With a new contract of course we can still sell him to a club like West Ham or Everton.

What do you see in Jones that the coaching staff can't see?

Why do you post on a discussion board if your only opinion is that the coaching staff (not that you have any proof they made this decision, although I'm sure they were consulted) and the club are always right?

To answer your question though, what I see in Jones is a man who cannot be relied upon; a man who has been here for eight years and only just scratched 200 games in all competitions, and a man who, when he has played, has veered from mediocre to abysmal. I see a man whose constant injury record has masked the fact that when he has played he's rarely, if ever, consistently looked like he should be a starting player for a title winning side.

What I see is another example of a club rewarding mediocrity, and what I see is the club throwing up barriers to getting youth players minutes by continuing to keep the squad bloated and full of deadwood. Even as a 'squad option' it's a poor bit of business.

It is not hate. Nobody hates Jones. Nobody. It is "hate" in terms that we all think that he is not good enough for us and decisions like this are not helping us to go forward and fight for title.
It's not even about whether he's good enough or not. It's that he's never fit.

I rate him but the whole point of a squad player is that they're available when you need them. We can't guarantee that with him.

So no new cb in the summer?
