Rojo is also a LVG signing. In reality all of them should not be here.
Yeah but Daley Blind is the son of LVG's former captain and also Dutch. He was the quintessential LVG signing imo.

Blind is a useful player for any squad imo. Good quality and can cover a fair amount of positions. Deffo think OGS would have utilized him more than Mou.

Blind should never been sold. He can play in various positions including in midfield. Jose has been as destructive as Moyes sometimes.

Blind was the easiest to get rid of, Rojo is on a giga salary for a shite player than even Everton refused to give this salary to him last summer and no one will pay to get a crock like Jones.

Blind is extremely overrated by United fans anyway. Not that this is the thread to discuss though.

Darmian will leave. So will Rojo if he his current injury doesnt feck it up. Then its odds on that one of Young and Valencia will leave as well. That is plenty for one summer window in defense. We need to replace them as well.
Jones should and will get a new contract as the homegrown squad player that he is. Will he be here after next season? Maybe, maybe not.
But there needs to be some form of continuity. Two or three defensive players out, no more next summer. And that means Jones stays IMO.

Agree. The medical staff would hate to work on a new player, and as you mentioned, him being a native English speaker is a bonus for them as well. That and the fact he is probably more versed in medical lingo than House.

Jones needs to be one of the very first out the door this summer . His injury record is horrendous and even when fit he loses us games with his brain farts

Then Rojo, Darmian and Valencia. We have a stunning amount of mediocrity in our defense.

Why not? If SAF has used him there for a purpose Ole could do.

Do you think that applies in 2019? Jones last played in midfield in 2013, its a whole different ball game now. Right now we have too many midfield options. None of our managers since Moyes (and IIRC he only used Jones in midfield a few times) have played Jones in midfield and rightly so. He's a center back

Jones has his uses too. SAF used him in midfield too in some matches.

He had some fairly decent games as a destroyer in midfield , most notably against Ronaldo and Fellaini if I remember correctly.

Hopefully doesn’t feature tomorrow. He will do something stupid, and against such opposition, likely to cost us. I don’t want to give him another opportunity to add to his goal at Wembley a year ago.

You may get laughed at but the funny thing is Darmian looked much better as a CB than Jones against Reading. You'd have thought it was Jones who converted positions

Youve got to be kidding me. Please rewatch the game.

Dont get me wrong, Darmian did well, but Jones was arguably our MOTM in that game.

Hoping thats sarcasm.

A bit of both. The idea that we should play Darmian as starting CB is funny and absurd but it actually makes some sense.

It is laughable, but as you state it he performed really well against Reading. While Reading is not the best benchmark to give us an indication of how good he is, i would not actually mind seing Darmian at CB against Kane.
Darmian seldom makes big mistakes in defense, and he is a typical Catenaccio player. Not the strongest nor the fastest, but he can pass and tackle well. And his defensive positioning is good when he does not have to contribute in attack. Less risky than playing Jones and hope he has a game without a brainfart.

Are you kidding me? He got away with some poor touches and I remember one loose and high back pass that had Romero scrambling. Even Solskjaer singled out Darmian as the biggest plus from that game

“He [Darmian] is the biggest plus today,” Solskjaer told MUTV after the game. “Matteo looked like he had played there before for a long time.

"Matteo looked like he had played at centre-back for a long while.

He’s Italian, very cultured, calm on the ball. He was one of the few that at times settled us down, tried to pass it, I don’t think he put a foot wrong. "

Jones didn't get many favorable ratings

Metro gave him a 5 and had this to say:

Shown up by Darmian’s mature display, with the England international looking ragged on occasions

M.E.N said this:

Railed at the mediocrity, sometimes after he was culpable. Caught out a couple of times by Reading on counters

He was the lowest rated defender by most publications.

Of course he'll single him out because he hasn't played in a while and as you said, isn't a centre back, so naturally, if he plays well, he'll get rave reviews.

Whoscored, which is probably more reliable and better analysts than all those tabloids had Jones with a rating of 7.24 and Darmian at 7.02.

Unfortunately, with a lot of football fans, once they have an idea in their head, they often stick to it.

As I said, Darmian was good, but so was Jones, and because of that, doesn't deserved to be dropped tomorrow.

Lets just hope he remembers he's a Manchester United CB and not a Spurs forward. I know Spurs are looking forward to seeing him in the starting lineup. I can't believe you actually thought he was good enough to be considered MOTM.

Looks like the 'Jones is our best CB when fit' crowd are back. Luckily for them Rondon was sleeping when Jones gifted him a 1v1 so they can keep on going on about how he has been good.

Similarly, I can't believe, having had a decent game against a championship side in Reading, some of you lot want to see Darmain as our centre back.

All im saying is Darmian upstaged him, and Jones was really poor. He's the one most likely to gift Spurs a goal tomorrow

Jones was not “really poor” against Reading. He was our 4th highest rated player on here which, given he basically gets marked down a point just for being Phil Jones, really means he has a good game.

Personally, I voted him MoM. He held together our back 4. Darmian did well for someone playing out of position but was clearly the junior partner and was exposed positionally on occasion. Of course, our midfield also provided as much protection as a chocolate fire guard, so the defence all deserved decent ratings.

So our manager singled out Darmian as the biggest plus from the game only because he was played out of his natural position?

I have no idea. Maybe he felt building up a reserve player’s confidence was important, after he had a good game? Seems the type of thing hed do. Anyway, I was taking issue with the statement that Jones was really poor - I don’t have any issue with someone saying Darmian had a good game - he did well.

You have to remember that Darmian was much better distributing from the CB position. I do agree that Darmian looked a tad inexperienced there, so in that area I gave the edge to Jones, but taking distribution into account, I had to put Darmian above Jones.

In any case, United need to let go of Jones this summer. The others still have contracts so he's the easiest to free up space as we'll be adding a CB in the summer and Tuanzebe will be back from loan.

He probably will play. He'll make yet another mistake, but will continue to get game time.
Fergie, Moyes, LVG, Jose, Ole - all of them seem to love P.Jones.

tbf to Ole, he's had 3 fit CB's while he's been in charge, and one of them decided to be a knobhead a get sent off in a game we were winning 4-1 in. He's had no choice but to play Jones

I hope this thread isn't bumped after FT :nervous:
