'Good' defender that costs the team a few games a season by himself. The idea that fans are emotional is proven with this thread.

He has been good last 2 matches.

But remember Jones-Rojo. Remember Jones-Bailly. We have been at this before. We know how it's going to end. I'm not falling into it again.

He was positionally excellent today. And everytime one of his teammates got caught out of position, Jones was the one directing/berating them.

He's the best leader we have at CB.

Jones had a really good game today. There were so many occasions when it was him heading the ball away, making important tackles and interceptions. I still worry about his lack of composure at times, but he deserves plaudits for his performance today.

It's interesting to see Ole playing him as the left sided CB with Lindelof on the right. I think Jose would have played them the other way around.

A good CB, but in no shape or form, an elite level player. He's great against mediocre opposition but against top players like Kane and Hazard he always comes out second best.

If he requires high wages then it's best we get rid of him and buy an elite level CB like Kouilibaly.

He is a very talented and good defender tainted by high-profile mistakes and a dodgy injury record. He'd be a very good option if not for the constant injuries. I really wish he'd somehow manage to stay fit for the rest of the season.

I'd expect him to be good against Cardiff and Huddersfield. Means little though. Please no contract. It's like flushing half the money down the drain.

If you ever wanted confirmation about whether football is a fickle game, I point you to this thread...

Cannot believe what I am reading...

This . Jones cost us a cup final last season and has cost us against Valencia with top spot up for grabs in our CL group. When he has to win a battle with a decent player his limbs go flying everywhere in a panic.

This thread is quite funny compared to other defender threads. Smalling can put any physical forward in his pocket including someone like Kane, yet Jones gets just as much credit for playing well while not being tested against relegation fodder.

Yeah suddenly he is a great CB, forget about him almost costing us goals last match when he ruined the offside trap twice or scoring own goals beeing prone to mistakes (Spurs away). The man is shear quality!

When he arrived back In 2011 he looked like a raw untapped talent that was a bit rough round the edges.

Now In 2018 he still looks like a raw untapped talent that is a bit rough round the edges.

He played well again. But he looked like he had a mistake in him:A red card challenge ,an own goal or a short back pass. Maybe it's confirmation bias .

Secondly, no contract extension ,after extension he either injures himself or make a high profile mistake. We are tired of waiting for him to fulfill his 'potential.

Is anyone actually asking for him?

This is going to end up like Fellaini, isn't it? We will sign a new improved contract with a player no one wants even for free. Fellaini is at least far less injury prone.

Performed two games in a row. Hope he doesn't stay fit. It sounds bad but we all know if he keeps playing he will get a new contract when he doesn't deserve one at all. New contract and he will be out injured again a few games later. He has had years to be consistent and stay fit and he hasn't done it. So by no means do two games justify a contract. Thanks for the games you played and antics but its time to go.

You would think he’s out of the team as soon as Smalling is fit again.

I'm not getting sucked in. We've been down this road far too many times. Jones is a ticking time bomb waiting to go off . If Ole is a clever man he must drop Phil Jones before he costs the team again.

Why do new managers always give Jones a chance to make a starting role his when they take over? I mean every player deserves a clean slate with a management change but there's a pattern with Jones. Moyes did IIRC and the rest have, and it always ends the same way with him being injured and eventually going down the pecking order when he regains fitness because of poor performances. LVG and Moyes in particular really tried to give him a chance and they both ended up not trusting him, with Smalling getting the most appearances and being the main guy at the back. Bailly should be playing ahead of him.

And play who? Jones has comfortably been the best member of our backline in the last two games under Ole. He won't be dropped for some things that happened in the past.

Jones is showing what many people know, that a lot of the time he's a good defender. He's struck me over the last few years as somebody very low in confidence. Injuries don't help but he's seemed like someone who's been affected by the lazy ridicule thrown his way. Being a meme footballer who's always injured can't be easy.

I wonder if Ole can bring out the confidence in him again. I'd love to see the player SAF rated so highly and who was comfortable enough on the ball for Capello to play in midfield.

It seems like a long shot. I think too much time has passed and there have been too many injuries.

Pretty sure the departure of Rio, Vidic and Evra so close together had a negative impact on our whole defensive line. There was a wealth of experience which needed to be passed on but sadly didn't happen. I believe Jones and Smalling would have been better players with a longer "hand over" period. Longer term I do worry a little bit about the hand over to the up and coming CBs in the reserves and youth team from our current first choice CBs. Having the right coaches is going to be key if we don't invest in experienced CBs.

Post in this thread exemplify why we are where we are

A player non of the other top teams would be interested in, has no business playing for us

That is a weird way of seeing things. Anyway we will see in the summer if he doesn't sign a new contract.

Fellaini also has his benefits at least. Jones is useless.

Wait when we actually play a decent team . Doing the bare minimum doesn't mean anything against the relegation fodder. he's shown on multiple occasions that he cannot be trusted against the better teams and attackers and starts to panic. Giving players like Jones chance after chance with different managers is the reason we are in this position.

He hasnt done the bare minimum, he's been better than Lindelof in the past 2 matches.

But yes its against small teams. He's fine against the smaller and medium sized teams but if we're playing a top 8 club Lindelof has played more of those games this season and Smalling has played in all of them so thats our pairing.

Are people really suggesting we offer him another five year contract?
You see why this club is in such a mess...

Please, please dont fall into the Phil Jones trap again.
He needs to be released this summer - PLeeeeease dont give him a new contract based on a handful of decent games, when he's stunk the place out earlier in the season. He'll be out of favour again by February at the latest.

He does this a lot, as do all our CBs tbh. Makes a cataclysmic howler then has a run of steady games and gets injured. While he's playing well now there's no need to rush him out of the side, but I fully expect Smalling or Bailly to be the mainstay eventually this season. Jones should be out of the club next year.

What is wierd about it? We have an injury prone mediocre CB, who is always a moment away from costing us a game, and you have people on here talking like if he is some quality CB.

Its bad enough that Jones has been with us for this long, but the idea that some would see him remain beyond this summer is just shocking

If he's not fecking injured all the time, Jones and Smalling pair would be good enough for us to challenge the League.

Happens in every thread, where posters staunchly defend a player no matter what happens during their time here. The only exception seems to Smalling and De Gea who are funnily enough our most consistent players post SAF.

You can tell as posters are going completely over the top after two games against fodder for any player that's had a good game. Erasing multiple years of performances because they see this as a fresh start when it isnt.

You don’t seriously believe that clubs aren’t interested in the likes of Fellaini and Jones?

Every club outside the top six would bite your hand off for players of that ilk. What they can seldom afford is the wages these players are accustomed to. Players don’t like to take such a hit and often end up in places like Turkey or Russia as a result.

No doubt to be had, however, if Phil Jones is available this summer then just about every Premier League club south of sixth will be putting their hat in the ring.

I'm not saying that Jones is great or whatever, but because another top team wouldn't be in for a player - not just Jones - does not mean he shouldn't be playing for a club. No one even know which clubs will be in for Jones if he doesn't sign a new contract.

He didn't just do the bare-minimum. He was impressive in both games, led the backline and did most of the defending against Cardiff. Every player gets a clean slate according to Ole, and based on the last two games, he's justified the chance he's got and does not deserve to be dropped any more than Lindelof(re your first post).
