He's not shit. He showed that last season. He's just not who we want starting matches against the top sides, thats where he makes mistakes

Games like this he's a very good option

If he's fit. I like Jones but his fitness record just makes him too unreliable. I'd still get rid of Rojo first though.

He’s actually a very good defender. The problem is he’s got a mistake in him and his injury record is horrendous.
Agreed. He's a front-foot defender.

He senses danger early and then puts himself into the mix. When he's unable to stop the danger, it ofter looks like a mistake even when it wasn't. That's what happens when you try and force your way into bad situations, rather than stand back and hope it doesn't reflect badly on you.

That's not to say he never makes mistake. His form in the early part of the season in particular was shit. But if he stood on the edge of the box the whole game and never got involved, you'd get loads of people calling him a Rolls Royes of a defender.

I've given up on him and don't think there's anything that can change my mind.

If he's not fecking injured all the time, Jones and Smalling pair would be good enough for us to challenge the League.

I thought he was our best player today until Pogba decided to turn into superman in the second half.

He's not consistent enough (both in terms of mistakes and fitness) to rely on so I do hope he's let go at the end of the season, but people definitely go overboard with how poor he is.

A full season about 80% injury free, no own goals, max 3-5 mistakes led to goal whole season and top performances against the top clubs. If he can do that too, which is what we need, then a performance like today against bottom team seems pale in comparison. Not that he had a bad performance, just that the bar at the moment is very low for him.

People arguing over Jones quality is neither here nor there, there's obviously a decent CB in there, he has most of the tools bar the odd brainfart or three, but it feels like a waste of time making him a main starting figure as history has shown us time and again he cannot be relied upon to stay fit.

His contract ends in six months.

He was decent but I just don't see any reason why he's not the one we sell to make room for a CB upgrade as he simply cannot stay fit, he has missed almost 2 thirds of our last 144 games.

Same reason why I'd also look to offload Rojo. I'd rather keep Jones out of the two as he is far better on the ball l, but both need to go as we barely even have a full time CB with both put together. It's like some weird 'job share'

That just means it is too late for him. Would never extend his deal on the basis of what I wrote.

Now would be a good time to cash in if someone makes an offer in Jan.
Absolutely. A team like Southampton would need a defender like him even in January, and could probably offer around 15M too. We would be stupid not to put him in the shop window.

People can knock Phil Jones all they want (and sometimes it’s certainly merited) but the fact remains that every single manager he’s played under has considered him first choice when fit.

Ferguson didn't, Moyes can't remember, Van Gaal possibly the first season but Mourinho preferred others at times even when Jones was fit.

So it's not actually a fact.

He cant iron out the mistakes if he keeps on getting injured. One thing leads to the other. If he could stay fit for a year, he would be a monster

Yep - 15mil plus add ons would be good business

Feck off Phil, you are not going to convince me this time. Can everyone show common sense and not give this guy a new 6 year contract? Thanks.

And you would have to be a really dumb person to agree to a move in January if your club no longer wanted you when by holding on for a mere 6 months you could walk away on a free and your agent could negotiate a substantial part of that £15 million as a signing on fee.

Just in an attempt to prevent the silly replies I should have added unless of course the side that wanted to sign you was fighting for major honours.

Except neither of them did. He was never first choice under Fergie, van Gaal preferred Smalling and Blind, Mourinho preferred Smling plus one most of his time here, just like van Gaal he was overusing Smalling even in pointless games when he was. Even Mourinho's last game he played broken foot Smalling ahead of him. And now Smalling is injured, so we don't know yet what Ole thinks.

He can probably convince a decent club like Southampton in the form he is in right now, but if he is injured in the summer and without a contract it all becomes more uncertain for Jones. I don't think such an injury prone player wants to take that risk just for a bigger signing on fee.

Well given his injury record theres no guarantee he'll be fit when his contract expires. Serious injuries however unlikely do happen.

Would have had him resting today, with him coming in against Bournemouth but played this game and didn't put a foot out of place.

Why the feck are so many people saying he should be gotten rid of in the Matchday and Post-match threads? Thought he was really good today. Some people will see what they want to see. Insane.

He has 6 months left on his contract and he can't be relied upon to stay fit for more than a few games. We need defensive stability and he unfortunately can't provide that. With 5 senior defenders that all have questions marks over them, we need to be looking to move players on to make way for new blood - Jones (along with Rojo,) top that list unfortunately

For what it's worth, I think he is a very good CB after a run of games. Brave, hard working and very accomplished on the ball. Unfortunately after 9 years he had failed to nail down a spot and it's highly unlikely to ever happen with his injury record

He is a good player when fit, and out of all our Cb options he probably has the most rounded game. Glad to see him starting to use the ball more confidently, it was something he had regressed in, too often taking the out ball to the keeper when he has far more ability on the ball than he uses.

Can't see us getting more than 7M tops for an injury-prone player with 6 months left on his contract.

I would look to move on though, we need to free up space in the squad, particularly at CB where we have 5 seniors players at the club and another on loan who is ready for the step up (Tunzebe)

I was getting stick for saying this last season, but I really do feel that when it comes to sheer talent, no CB we have is better than him, it's his body that's betraying him.

He’s played ok in two games. But this talk of a new contract is premature. Let’s see if he can carry this for more than 10 games. If he can’t then bin him.

He was regularly in the team under all of those managers, especially at the beginning of their tenures. Fabio Capello wanted him in the England side when fit, too. Injuries would often interrupt that initial idea, and partnerships would develop thereafter (Smalling/Blind) but every single manager at the club, Moyes aside, has clearly had a lot of time for his defending.

When fit he was always starting for Ferguson. It was often a different position each match.
