Phil Jones | 2013/14 Performances

I'd love one of our video editors on here to put together something from his performance yesterday. He made a mockery of Arsenal's midfield in that first half.

I sure if you flutter your eyelashes a few times at MoneyMay he would oblige!

Whatever he lacks in his ability as a footballer he more than compensates this weaknesses with grit, determination and commitment to the cause. If he can bring some composure to his play, and keeps his head up he'd be our Bryan Robson for the next 10 years.

Funny how people were almost writing him off after a few uninspiring performances. He'll be one of the best CB's in the world when he peaks, and I'm warming more and more to the idea of him in that midfield destroyer role. Beast.

Exactly this. It was a strange experience to see not just the grit but the quality of the midfield evaporate when he made way for Cleverley there. If he starts putting in performances like that every week Fellaini's career with us will be fleeting.

For me, it speaks volumes that our £27 million midfield signing gets benched in favour of a centre back. Jones is only matched in brilliance by his own ugliness.

I don't mind seeing Jones in midfield, and after yesterday, he's shown huge signs of improvement. Not just his physical clout, but his anticipation to step into key passes and cut them out was very disciplined, where in previous seasons he might have been found ball-chasing and getting caught out. He's still a huge physical presence, but he's seemingly calming down and picking the right times to get stuck in, which is very encouraging.

The position I don't think we should see him in is right back, and with Rafael, Valencia, Smalling and Fabio(?), then there's probably no need for him to play there. His future is in the middle. I still believe he will naturally be a centre back, but there's no harm in him gaining experience and confidence in midfield. Vincent Kompany started in the same way, and I remember him being distinctly gung-ho, like our young Jones, when he first joined City. His ball-playing was very brash and he was a little clumsy, but playing in midfield certainly moulded him into an excellent footballer as well as a great defender. I hope Jones can follow the same path.

Maybe the best he's ever played in midfield? He did a good job on Ronaldo at the Bernabeu but he was excellent in the defensive midfield role yesterday and his actual football even better.

How he was walking after the Szcezny challenge is beyond me. Hard bastard.

Gonna be interesting to see if the City fans continue to sing that ridiculous Aguero/Jones song when he's developing into one of the best young players around. They can spunk obscene amounts on ready developed foreign imports, we'll continue to give young English talents a chance.

Fixed that for you.

Hooray Phil Jones, though. Wonderful human being, head of steel.

He really impressed me yesterday, great player to have in the squad.

Bit harsh. Must be hard for a CM being pushed back into centre back. ;)
Wasn't it you who took a good bollocking for sticking up for Jones as a cm? If so, then fair play. I think I remember you being ridiculed by quite a big number of self-entitled football managers.

I have to say it again.. what a lad! He's one of our players that I really love to watch play. Tremendous stuff.

I've liked him in midfield for a while. He seems to have most of his good games there!

Told you we didn't need to sign one ;)

When you see performances like the one against Arsenal, you can tell what Fergie was getting at in that interview. Not the best, in terms of quality etc but just what he can be as a driving force to United, he really has everything to be a real leader for us.

Still has a lot to improve on but I have been very happy with him this season and it's his big game performances which are pleasing.

He's never going to be an Iniesta, I doubt he will improve his passing and creativity much over the years, I just hope he keeps on improving in the areas he is already good at.

So have people's opinion of him in midfield changed ever so slightly, after impressive performances in a number of big matches there?

As things currently stand I'd play Carrick/Jones with wingers allowed to roam in most matches. I think Jones offers us more than every other player in the position that's played there so far.

Still, he's a CB and a bloody good one at that.

Who wants or is expecting him to turn into a player like Iniesta?

In terms of his reading of the game and his mobility in the midfield, yes, I have been impressed and have slightly changed my opinion. In saying that, on the ball, he is still the same for me, when you compare his ability on the ball in the middle compared to the top teams and their midfielders, it's a no contest. But in terms of a defensive job, he is great to have in there.

Future is at CB though.

If he can consistently play like he did yesterday, then I'd be more then happy to see him play in midfield more often.

Right now I'd have him in there for all our big matches (I'd play Cleverley in the 'smaller' matches or games we're expected to control, or in a midfield 3 with Carrick. And I'd just pretend Fellaini doesn't exist)

The thing is no one seem particularly bothered doing the defensive work in midfield this season, except for Jones. And if we play him there, we might as well go with him and one of Carrick/Cleverley, shore it up defensively and allow our wingers more freedom, instead of trying to partner him with a more creative player that leaves him isolated.
It seemed to work very well vs Fulham and in one half vs Arsenal.

At least for now I think that might be the best bet.

It's an exaggeration to emphasise a point those saying he'll never make it in midfield because his technical game isn't up to scratch and there's a lot of people who feel that.

I'm just making the point that he could become world class as a very different type of midfielder.
