Tried ridiculous things on the attacking front like dribbling the entire Arsenal defence, other than that he was brilliant today.

He ran past a couple at full pelt. Don't think he could do much given the momentum other than try and beat the last few.

BREAKING: Phil Jones arrested after being found leaving Old Trafford with £42million in his pocket. Mesut Ozil has been returned to Arsenal.

I love how Jones goes on mad runs from midfield like he's Robson or summat then realises he's not and feck's up.
Jones didn't feck up, the ball shit itself worried that Jones would Jones it.
Did anybody see just after he won that foul shepherding a ball out in our box, when he was sat on the floor and di a weird boddy-popping move? It looked like he'd been spooked by a ghost or something... I need a gif!
Pissing ourselves in the bar at that.

I love his 'dribbling' if you want to call it that. No fancy step overs, just hammers straight through players:lol:

 The one where he tackled Wilshere, right?

He did well in midfield I thought, not sure if he really can't develop into a proper MF :annoyed:

The tackle on 32 minutes on Carzola was fantastic.

It reminds me of that thing a clown does when they keep trying to pick up a ball but accidentally kick it instead and have to go collect it only to kick it again. Only sped up.

Like he's chasing the ball as fast as he can but every time he reaches it he kicks it away. Bit different to Messi who despite running at full speed, the ball never goes any further than the shadow of his toe.

I thought he probably had one of his top 2 games at CM today. Broke up everything that Arsenal tried to start in the first half, and consequently allowed Carrick to spray the ball around comfortably at his own pace. I thought we lost control of the midfield after he dropped back, and Carrick looked like he was struggling with Arsenal's passing and intensity. Was watching his positioning off the ball as well, as this has been a particular gripe of mine when he plays CM, and I thought he did well today in that respect. Great first half performance for me.
Definitely
Arsenals second half pressure was no coincidence, the lack of Jones breaking up their play helped the arses immensely, they were all but nullified first half and Jones presence in the middle was the key behind it. He was still magnificent and glorious even after being asked to change positions mid game, I have been slightly blinded to his hype but today my eyes where opened. This Jonesy lad is an utter beast.

Biggest thing to compliment his performance today was that our midfield got much worse without him in it, while our defence didn't look any weaker at all when he replaced Vidic there.

Would have been MOTM for me if it wasn't for Rooney running around like a maniac.

So so good to see a performance like that from a player with such potential. Such hype on Arse this year (they have played to the point of deserving such hype obviously) and he just walks in and makes them look ordinary. I love the guy and he is all ours

I am in the middle of travelling from Sydney to Dublin and sitting in a dull Malaysian airport... this gave me a much needed lol

Excellent today. Problem is though, I'm not sure what his best position is now. People are saying he will eventually be a CB, but for me he seems to love getting stuck into a midfield. Good option to have I suppose.

When you can have a guy make such an impact in the centre and then step back and replace the tank without any mention of dismay - its a pretty good problem to have

Aye, it is.

Like Smalling was excellent today both in midfield and in defence and got some good challenges in and the right times.

Probably our 2nd best midfielder right now. He's been very good this season wherever he's played.

Easily my new favorite player, he's such a beast! I'd love to see him in a midfield three, alongside Carrick and Cleverley. He'd wreck havoc.

I think people are so caught up on midfielders being creative technicians these days that they forget that football goes through trends, 8 or 9 years ago it was all about "the water carrier" with Makelele excelling at Chelsea and Gattuso at Milan.

You've just got to find a system that suits your best players, Jones is a talented player, I see no reason why alongside the right players, he couldn't use his skill set to over power the opposition and stop them playing either as a water carrier or a box to box midfielder.

Totally agree, good post.

A great display. Both in midfield and at the back, really showing that he is the real deal and will become massive for us.

So the question remains ... is he best in midfield or defence? He's like the psycho version of Ronnie Johnsen.

I've been all for Jones becoming a regular in midfield when Jones had the whole Madrid attack in his pocket when we went to the Burnabeu last season and Ronaldo didn't get a sniff...With Jones injured for the second home leg..we just simply were not the same team

Phil Jones could easily play next Man of Steel II without ever needing the stuntsmen and special effects.

From Football365's 16 Conclusions about United v Arsenal:

"We've seen some pretty ludicrous refereeing decisions in recent weeks, but the yellow card given to Jones for colliding with Wojiech Szczesny is right up/down there with the worst of them. The man was looking the other way, towards the ball, when they clashed heads. The only reason Jones wasn't similarly hurt was because he is apparently impervious to human pain. The first footballer ever carved straight from a potato."

Guess he's the greatest Mr. Potato Head ever then.

Why does the title for Jones' thread read "the Greatest Human Ever" - shouldn't it be "the Greatest Ever" as that would include demi-gods etc, which he is clearly better than.

He's been impressive lately, even as a CM - he had Arsenal's midfield in his pocket, and that was on a day where I don't think Carrick was at his very best (but faded noticably after Jones was switched to CB).

Got criticised last week for saying Jones is better in CM than Fellaini. Apparently he can only do man-marking jobs against the likes of Bale. :smirk:

Thought he he was brilliant yesterday. Love that he's so fully committed. Fights for everything, shirks nothing and always gives 100%. Saw the state of his head on MUTV after the game. Looked awful. He's really maturing and understands the role of CM positionally a lot more now. He gives us some good options in there with Carrick, Cleverley and maybe even Kagawa (if it's in a three).

MotM for me. I thought he was excellent.

Yeah but that had nothing to do with his clash with Szczesny or with the game, even.

I'd love one of our video editors on here to put together something from his performance yesterday. He made a mockery of Arsenal's midfield in that first half.

Exactly this. It was a strange experience to see not just the grit but the quality of the midfield evaporate when he made way for Cleverley there. If he starts putting in performances like that every week Fellaini's career with us will be fleeting.
