What's with the obsession over fast and creative players? I am sure plenty of teams have managed to be successful without exceptionally quick players. Possession football isn't even about pace.

I think you need the pace because as we saw last year, possession football without it doesn't work when teams sit two lines at the edge of their box.

Good possession football pulls the opposition this way and that before exploiting the space created with a couple of fast players.

Last year we pulled teams all over the place but didn't have players with the pace or penetration to capitalise.

People seem to be looking at his last 6 months for Real & believing that to be the level he's played at throughout his whole career. It's not. He was a very good player for them but that 6 months was an anomaly compared to his whole time there.

This has always baffled me. For much of his career, ADM juts seemed a pretty average (by the standards of those around him in the Argentina / Madrid teams) player. Then suddenly after half a season he's the world's best.

To offer some perspective, Di Maria was heavily compared to Nani at one time on here. For large spurts of his Madrid career, I don't think it was a poor comparison either.

And that's an apt comparison.

I'd welcome this signing. I don't understand some posters' reasoning that if he isn't on the level of Neymar or other world beaters, it isn't good enough. Gradual improvement through small steps is still better than no improvement at all. And there's no doubt Pedro would improve us. A front three of Depay, Rooney and Pedro has plenty of power, pace and goals. What's not to like?

13 points from the first 13 games, despite having an easy schedule. Had we started better we would be up there with Chelsea. The reason we didn't start better is not because of lack of pace IMO. It's because we had to get accustomed to a new manager with a new philosophy, while having a choppy back four (due to injuries) to boot.

Good point. At the risk of oversimplifying matters, it is worth noting that Barcelona seemingly preferred to sell Sanchez rather than Pedro. Further, I think it's clear that they don't want to lose Pedro now. There's a reason for that! Of course, it's not certain that Pedro will have the same impact in England that Sanchez has had, but he certainly has the potential to.

think Sanchez was sacrificed last Summer as Suarez was coming in and either Pedro was preferred as an out and out goalscorer or as a product of La Masia and they showed no intention of getting rid of him

even now Barca don't want him to go and its the players decision - he's a better fit for us i feel than Di Maria was in providing not just pace and unpredictability up front but also genuine goalscoring ability

still don't feel overly confident in this and won't feel good until I see him and Ed smiling whilst wearing the sacred red

Obligatory highlights video from 2014-2015 season. The bicycle kick at 1:19 is particularly nice. Seems to have an eye for goal which I never realised.

Best thing about him I think.

On the comparisons with Di Maria, I think it's obvious Di Maria has more to his game, but I'm struggling to see how over their career, as wingers/wide-forwards, Di Maria has proven himself the better player.

You didn't know he scored plenty of goals?

I look forward to us confirming this deal soon, he will be a great player for us over the years. He is playing second fiddle to the best attacking three in the world right now and still getting a good amount of goals and assists. Look at how important he has proved to be to Barca over the years, he's won it all and still has a good few seasons left in him at least.

We can get him for a reasonable price and unlike Di Maria, Pedro has the attitude to be a United great if he comes here. We were never at all likely to get Reus, Bale or Ronaldo and if we did it would have required offering insane money, the Pedro deal makes sense on so many levels and definitely gets my vote.

This deal is further away then the media are making iut but it will happen.

You may well be right about the philosophy. I think Van Gaal is improving the players technical ability (or moving on those who can't improve) and there was always going to be a dip while that happened. He said himself that there is always a dip when he first takes over a club before you start to see the rewards of his philosophy.

I think the defence gets too hard a rap though. They conceded 37 goals last year which is 6 fewer than the season before and 6 fewer than 2012/13 when we won the league. The problem last year was that we scored 2 goals less than we did under Moyes and 24 less than we did in our title winning season the year before.

That is a significant improvement in defence, particularly when they they had a real lack of protection from midfield. With the addition of Schneiderlin and Schweini, I honestly reckon in 6 months time everyone is going to be singing praise from the rooftops about out defence in much the same way the very well protected Southampton and Chelsea defences were praised last year.

But with speed we might have had even more points than we did after the first 13 games? The Everton and WBA games in particular.

However our most important player last season was Carrick IMO. When he was injured we played horribly and he was involved in all our good runs.

Just want this done now if we are signing in. Glad we got a lot of business done early because as we saw last year, it can take signings a while to bed in. But if we are bringing in Pedro and possibly a centre half, it would be nice to have them done before deadline day.

Yeah and there were plenty more like it throughout the season. The number of games we watched us own the ball and pass it back and across without ever really threatening was hugely frustrating. Depay and Pedro will give a much more direct cutting edge in those situations.

Don't think they can have numbers since they cannot be registered yet
Yeah but they will have to get numbers in January so someone has to make space. I think Sandro and Munir don't have to be registered though, or do they? The most likely to leave are Pedro and Sergi Roberto.

Sorry to digress, but this is not correct. We had 13 points from first 10 games, and we had 22 points from first 13 games (and we were still in 4th position after the first 13 games). Also even if we consider only the 2nd half of last season (last 19 games), we would still have been 4th (tied with Liverpool and just 1 point above Spurs) and 8 points behind Arsenal, and 7 behind Chelsea.

Exactly, after the poor start and defensive injuries etc. We then went through a spell of not being able to create for shit, and loosing games 1-0 after dominating possession. West Brom, Southampton, Chelsea spring to mind.

We had some decent spells last season, but nothing consistent at all

Surely they can still give them a number?

As it stands they can't the only possible numbers are between 1 and 25 with 1, 13 and 25 reserved for Goalkeepers.

Edit: after that the numbers are for youth players under 19, iirc.

Agreed. And Valencia as well. He hasn't got the best flair but he is very stable and will allways run at the defence. Unlike Nani who always stopped.

For shirt sales they would have been given a number, two players are leaving.

No, two numbers haven't been attributed.
Again, for shirt sales it would have been wise to give them a number, I reckon Vidal or Turan will get 7. ( however this could be pure wishful thinking on my part)

Again they can't give them a number, numbers are league related, you can't give a number to an unregistered player.

I think there was a period from around Sept - April. where we got the same amount of points as Chelsea/City. In short We started the season badly and ended it badly.
