Mata's definitely been given a brief to roam. He's been popping up all over the place and never once subbed off, so Van Gaal is obviously happy with what he sees.

Januzaj was also roaming around against Villa but I did wonder if him being subbed and Van Gaal's harsh post match comments were a consequence of positional indiscipline.
Yup, I was glad to see Mata roaming cause exactly cause of that he assisted to Adnan and has put Memphis in that goalscoring chance. As for Adnan I think he was subbed more cause of loosing possesion as LVG said so himself. I dont think it was a positional thing.
Then again I may be wrong of course.

Mata has a very high football IQ in attack and in defence.

He knows when to drop back to take protect the RB, or even fill in his position when the full back is bombing forward.

His positioning in dangerous opposition attacks is pretty much spotless as well.

I think this is one of the main reasons for the unrelenting Van Gaal love for the wee man.

Either his work ethic has increasind a ridiculous amount since coming to United or that was not the reason at all Mourinho got rid.

Good post, think about Mata in the middle and the speed of Depay and Pedro on the wings with the wee man threaded all those passes through for them to run onto.

£22m would be far too much for him really. But I guess United are a bit stuck and need something to add to attacking options (although he's not the high class striker they really need). Culturally he would fit in well I guess, and that counts for a lot.

Yeah this is the report from this morning. Still need to agree a fee with Barca which has always been the biggest stumbling block. Would be nice if they could do it today though before kick-off tonight.

Also

£22m doesn't exactly buy you a lot in modern football though does it.

We paid similar to that for Memphis and Pedro is currently a better player.

I think you'll the only one or in a minority if you think that's too much.

He works his socks off. I remember when Chelsea won the CL being blown away by how much running he did in the final. Whatever reputation he might have for not being a grafter is very unfair IMO.

22m would absolutely not be too much for a player like Pedro, and that's before you consider the inflated market of today.

£22m too much for Pedro? That's insane.

He may not be the very top level, but if you think anybody other than a very good footballer plays 200 matches for the Barca team of the last few years, you are deluded.

Take a look at other players' fees from the last couple of years - for £22m you generally get nothing more than decent. It's a great price for Pedro.

pfft, go back to the start of this thread if you think I'm the only one. Just because money has no meaning to the muppet crowd doesn't mean that 22m (in one lump sum) isn't a lot for a 28 year old squad player with limited sell-on value at the end of his contract.

Anyway, it's not as though I was saying we shouldn't buy him...

Makes me wonder, why If Mata has been given a brief to roam into the middle most of the time, leaving us one sided on the Right. We dont just line him up as a CAM behind a striker?. His vision there is awesome. Surely makes more sense?

Why do we really need to care about sell-on value when it's quite clear from the club, apart from obvious exceptions, they don't really care about getting a good figure when shipping players out.

Sterling £45-49million
Turan £24m
Schneiderlin £25m
Benteke £32m
Di Maria £45m
Memphis £25-30m

I don't know how £22m can be FAR too much for Pedro when you look at the typical prices these days.

I don't think you can take those as comparison. Just take Fellaini £27m and you know why £22 is a bargain.

I'm afraid you can't distance yourself from them on that basis. It's the FM-obsessed transfer muppets who spend the most time agonising about fees and come out with classics like "Terrible signing for £25m but a great bit of business for £20m"

I think £25m for Lallana and £30m for Willian are the best comparisons.

Can't believe people think 22mil is too much for him. It's the bargain of the summer.

Non of those players were substitutes though. That has to be considered.
