If Pedro is meant to replace Mata, the net improvement of our play would be zero or negative. Mata's a better player than Pedro or at least not worst. Pedro has got attributes which Mata lacks and vice versa. Overall Mata is better though, IMO. Now if Mata is played centrally, as a Nr 10, then Pedro would make much more sense I guess. Or Pedro is going to replace Young?
It would be an improvement cause we would play winger on a wing. I agree if Pedro will play right Mata should probably play as a nr. 10.

St - rooney
Lw- Memphis
RW - Pedro
cam - mata

Surely our front 4 will be that.

Pedro could replace any one of our attacking players, with different qualities to all of them. He gives us another option, who has real quality in the final third. That will definitely improve us. Football is a squad game, after all.

I reckon Pedro is good for at least 8-10 goals and 5-7 assists if he signs for us.

That'd be a decent return in my view.

He would certainly improve our squad but not the first XI IF he replaced Mata, that was my point.

Pedro wouldn't replace Mata, IMO. Young will be the fallout boy. I do wonder if Mata will still play on the right and Pedro on the left/center.

Just watched the Balague interview and the leaks from Barcelona and Pedro entourage seem to say we are very close and a decision will be made this week at the very latest. It seems we have agreed terms with the player and Pedro has made his mind up to leave.

Seems like LVG doesn't even consider Mata as a no. 10 an option so I imagine it would be Pedro on the left, Mata on the right and Depay behind Rooney. Mata has to play.

He might be a good player but we dont need him imo. We have Memphis on the left, Mata on the right with Januzaj and Young as back up. I rather see Januzaj and Memphis given more play time and I personalyl like Mata. As I'd prefer to play with a 3-men midfield, we only need 1 striker and 2 wingers/inside forward. If we're about to buy a player, it should be to push or replace Rooney. So unless Pedro can play that position (I dont know that), I dont think it's a transfer that we need

You're satisfied with Young and Januzaj, who isn't even a winger?
Mata isnt a winger too.

I think van Gaal wants pace on that right side and he considers Mata to be our only option there right now.

Also as well as adding depth to our wings, he'll be able to compete with Rooney for the CF position too.

As back up, yes. I'd like to see Memphis getting game time (he needs it) and Mata on the right. Pedro I assume will be a starter so one of them will be benched

Mata can then be moved to a #10 role.

Mata can play as a nr. 10 with Memphis and Pedro on either side. Also Pedro adds depth in our forward positions in which we are really lacking.

Depay - Mata - Pedro looks excellent on paper, and is certainly comparable to Sterling - Silva - Navas. We also have a deeper bench of attacking options. Problem now is the lump up front who shall not be named.

Can he play that position though? Never seen him play but if he can, then I'm all for buying him!

He's played in some pretty advanced roles for Barca. I've certainly seen him play quite centrally, if not he has definitely been able to interchange to appear in that position. Reckon he'd be awesome there. His pace and finishing would do us wonders, and will hopefully get Rooney a kick up his backside.

That would be the ideal scenario for me as we need someone who can push Rooney or replace him if he wont get better

City's is most likely better at the moment. Silva over Mata, and if Pedro doesn't flop then he'll certainly be a better addition than Navas. Reckon it will all depend on how Memphis adapts really, which I expect him to, but how good he will become and to be fair how well Sterling will be too.

Certainly an exciting 3 though. A lot of pace on the wings filled with creativity from the 3, with the added ego from Memphis  Click boys! Click!

I don't think it's that simple, unless it's written in black / white we can't simply assume 30M is the buyout clause. We would have simply paid it if that's the case, and as much as I don't know much about Woody, but I'm sure he's no newbie in negotiating skills, and there could have been more to it than whatever the press reports.

And FWIW I don't think 5M is the stumbling block, Barca could possibly just refuse to honor that, or probably wants more in adds on etc.

I was talking in general, I don't think that 5m is the stumbling block, I don't even think that there is a stumbling block.

I think he will be a direct Mata replacement.

I hope I am wrong, but that's the only realistic way I see it going. I don't think LvG trusts Mata to play centrally.

I think we all agree Pedro would be a fine addition to our front 3 assuming we're gonna continue with a 433 system but will he fix our lack of creativity and goals up front? Sure having the speed and goal threat of Memphis and Pedro will be a much needed boost but I think we're gonna be too heavily dependent on the striker position.

Can Rooney do it? I believed so but after two games (i know, its only two) he looks gassed.

I thought Memphis, Rooney(or someone much sharper), Pedro and Mata can try interchanging their position throughout the match, just like how we did it with Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez. But sadly I don't see LVG doing that.

They were good servants to the club and giving them a quick, hassle free transfer is more important than trying to get an extra few million and dragging it on for weeks.

Well yeah it's possible that could have played a part but not too much.

We would have still got pretty close to the maximum fee we could have gotten from those clubs.

I exactly see that, Mata was roaming all over the place vs Villa for instance, he assisted Andan for the goal from the left.

If we do sign him then I eagerly await Jamie Feckface - sorry, Jackson, I keep getting his name wrong - writing an article saying that he came "despite Pedro's concerns about working with LVG", and as proof of this statement he will put a link to his original bullshit article that had no quotes or sources to back up his claims.

Mata's definitely been given a brief to roam. He's been popping up all over the place and never once subbed off, so Van Gaal is obviously happy with what he sees.

Januzaj was also roaming around against Villa but I did wonder if him being subbed and Van Gaal's harsh post match comments were a consequence of positional indiscipline.
