I'm so tired of reading this argument here.

It doesn't even add up.

Why would you use those 3 or so games in the summer to prepare for the World Cup?

Why not use the 2 years qualifying games? Any experiments done this summer will likely not provide answers for 2 years time anyway.

I actually think England have a better chance of making some sort of impact in 2012 anyway - right hemisphere, right climate and a good mix of experienced and young players.

Never write international tournaments off - they're too special and it's unfair on the likes of Rooney, who needs to shine in a tournament soon and may never have a better chance.

Sorry but I am equally tired of this argument.

1) Friendlies are meaningless. You learn next to nothing from them.
2) The kids would give a perfectly good account of themselves anyway. You think theyd do worse than the senior players in South Africa? They deserve a shout. And the squads mentioned above by various people are brimming with talent.
3) Every tournament seems like one where we have a good chance. Every single one. Non argument.

Unfair on the likes of Rooney? Give me strength.

Manchester United's Paul Scholes hints at spending a further season at Old Trafford

Having made a sensational U-turn earlier this season the midfielder could be set to extend his stay with the champions following an informal chat with Sir Alex Ferguson this week

Manchester United’s Paul Scholes could be set to extend his stay at Old Trafford beyond the end of this season, according to The Sun.

Having retired at the end of last season, the 37-year-old made a dramatic comeback earlier this year and was named as a substitute in United’s 3-2 triumph over Manchester City in the FA Cup.

It didn’t take long for the midfield maestro to make his mark in the United team, scoring the opener on his return to Old Trafford in a 3-0 win over Bolton last month.

Reports are now suggesting the former England man is contemplating extending his Old Trafford stay, though has conceded he will need to discuss with his family first.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has also confirmed the board have drafted a one-year deal for the midfielder and would love him to stay at the club.

Ferguson has also revealed statistics from recent games which show Scholes is averaging the same levels as he did 16 months ago.

They included a pass completion rate of 82 per cent, while his kilometres per game ranked him alongside Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick.

Stolen from the internetz....

Yeh, it was in the Sun.

The hint denounced from the fact that he can still run?

SAF claimed he's got a contract in the works then? Scholes' not said owt mind.

Did he ever have any pace? The only speed Scholes has ever needed is in his head, and he still has that in abundance.

He is still a class above and on the form he has shown in the last few games i doubt there is a team in the PL that would not benefit from his quality.

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Drunken bump.

I mean seriously, what a fecking player he is. When it was announced before the cup tie at city he was coming back, I was torn between thinking it smacked of desperation and utter joy.

Utter joy has become the overriding emotion.

Quite simply the best English player of his generation, and probably in the top ten of all time.

Agree with all. since his return he has literally coasted through games against lower opposition and in the big games he destroyed liverpool at anfield and we fell apart when he came off, he made a huge difference off the bench at arsenal and even bigger at chelsea and overall has possibly been our best player since his return. going better than i hoped it would.

Quite simply we could not have signed a better player to fit in right away and to help us this season.

On the longterm he is not an option. He is not the big midfield signing we all want.

But no other player could have slotted into the side as easily as Paul Scholes and have had such an impact too.

Incredible

If I ever were to meet/come across a United player from the last 15 years... the first question I would ask them is "what is it like to play football with Paul Scholes?"

Spot on. Scholes needs pace as much as Modric needs it. the only problem is that he cant play the same amount of games as before. Otherwise its the same old scholsey

easily in the top, easily in the top three as well.

I'm still struggling to understand how the feck can he be so good. He's still bossing the games FFS. Incredible player.

For me that's what sets the very best players apart from the others; the intelligence, anticipation and footballing brain. That's why these players can play with great quality and class even in late thirties because their game is more about intelligence and awareness than physical attributes. The same goes with Giggsy; he's not the pacy winger anymore, but a great player because he isn't reliant on his pace or power. The very best dictate the game by their speed of thought and intelligence whereas the lesser players have to use their physical attributes to compensate for the lack of this intelligence. Of course, you could have the players who have both attributes, but those are very rare e.g. Pele, Duncan Edwards etc.

He's back on FIFA now which is awesome. Seems more ginger this year and randomly faster. There's not really much more we can say about scholes, he's just amazing. I really want him to put on a show tomorrow and show modric who's boss.

I think that when he was younger he did have a lot more pace, and that's why he was often seen as more of an attacking midfielder who can burst forward.

As you say though, with the role he's in now, he doesn't really need pace. He relies more on his technical ability, as well as his football brain. He's still got both of those, and it's a credit to players like Giggs and him the way they've re-invented their game in older age.

Also, great to see him staying on for another season. He's still going to be a key player for us.

Fergie didn't give much away in the press conference on Friday on this, weak basis for such an article tbh. I personally think he will play on (barring unforeseen circumstances like an injury) as stopping again when he's in this form would be sacrilege - Fergie wouldn't allow it.

I wonder if Scholesy's comments about missing the pre-season tour might have an effect on the club's plans next summer - for example is it really necessary to drag Scholes, Giggs and Rio to the Far East when they could have an extra couple of weeks rest before starting some fitness work with a shadow staff at Carrington and avoid all that travel

Fantastic news, Scholesy's been brilliant since he's come back and can still boss the midfield - exactly what we need.

If he's still got it, who cares how old he is? If a player is still dominating games then age is literally only a number and doesn't matter. Players should be picked on ability, not on their date of birth.

His worst game since his return. Looked a bit like the jaded Scholes towards the end of last season.

Wasn't his best game for us today, and he struggled to make much of an impact but that was probably because we never really managed to control the match until the later stages of it.

Tbh he struggled as much as anyone else. We let them set the tempo and were sloppy which was always going to be bad for us. He wasn't great but I thought there were a few others who were more sloppy.

He was bad but you could still see he was a class apart from everyone else, it's just those little things he does, we're very lucky to have him and Giggs to call on.

Very good with the ball at his feet. But without it the game seemed to be too fast for him. His positioning wasnt good and I can't think of too many tackles in midfield from him.

Dissapointing performance overall.

It's very rare that a team with Paul Scholes in it gets dominated in possession. Started off well in the first 10 minutes but then faded pretty badly.

He's been great since, but it's obvious that the 6 month break from football must have helped. We need to identify his replacement as soon as possible, either from within the club or outside.
