I dont think Scholes for England is right for either England or United. He needs a restful summer if he is going to be around for us next season. And England should really be looking forward to the WC and thinking about giving younger players some experience. England should be clearing the decks of its old guard, not bringing more old players on board.

Is he really going to be around next year though?

If it's his last season with us which it surely is? Then I would love to see him go out playing for England in his natural position and hopefully alongside Carrick.

If Wilshire isn't to make it then surely Carrick - Scholes - Parker is our best midfield with Rooney leading the line?

If Scholes isnt playing next season then yes, the point about United is irrelevant.

And yes, if Wilshere doesnt make it then there arent really the young players around in that position for the cull I think England really do need.

So yes, maybe you are right.

But my instinct is as I said - as far as England are concerned. Sack off all the old guard, bring in kids and call this tournament an experiment / experience building exercise ahead of the WC.

I've been championing this since the World Cup. Do a "Germany".

Wilshire, Cleverley, Richards, Smalling, Jones, Rodwell, Welbeck, Rooney, Young, Oxygen Chamber, Hart and I'm no doubt missing a few, should be making up the core of this Euros.

The fact is, they are not going to do any worse than a team based on Lampard, Gerrard, Terry and Ferdinand and if they do we can mark it down as a learning curve for them. I'd like to see Harry take over after the Euros personally so he can start a totally new project.

If he's called for the Euros duty, I'm pretty sure that he'll say yes to it. I remember him stating in an interview that he sorta regretted saying no for the World Cup. IMO Capello should have asked Scholesy to come out of retirement himself rather than asking Bandini to do it.

But what a story it would be if he did play and actually took England somewhere. Although I doubt it.

I dont see him saying 'no' if given the chance and him in a midfield 3 with carrick and parker would be good but, for me, its time to play the young ones. The old guard needs to go. A young, pacy, vibrant front 4 of Rooney Welbeck Sturridge and Young with a solid base of carrick and parker is how i'd go.

This. He said regretted it and under, presumably, 'Arry, he would for the first time have an international manager who wants him to play exactly how Scholes plays.

Under the current situation where everything is in an up heavel, I'm not sure going with pure youth, a la Germany, is wise. IF they bombed then the media would be on them like flies over a dead carcass.

I like Scholes for England. He deserves a proper tournament and it would be great to see his prowls against Spain.

Exactly how I feel. Its naive to say just pick all the youngsters and have a go. England finally have a great group of young players and it would be a waste to potentially demolish their confidence in one big swoop of a move. Would be very unfair on them as well. Same reason why Fergie would rather play Rafael or Park than Pogba in midfield.

And yes it would be great to see Scholes back on the world stage, my only fear is the run in takes his toll on him and he doesn't look as fresh for England as he does right now. Would be a shame if he's not up for it.

Im not saying this is the team to pick by any means. But if you went with something off the top of my head like:

Hart, Richards, Smalling, Cahill, Baines, Walcott, Cleverley, Wilshere, Young, Rooney, Sturridge. (With the likes of Welbeck, Jones, Johnson, Lennon, Walker, Rodwell and Milner on the bench), you have a team of players under 26, the nucleus of a team that can still be together at the WC and beyond, that has experience and ability. It isnt going to be demolished and come home with its confidence shattered. Its going to go and do OK, not win but not be an embarrassment either. And the experience is going to do them good.

I wouldnt be quite as harsh as this. I might take Ashley Cole and Gerrard as my only two older players. Maybe one or two others: Carrick and Parker are good shouts.

OK there is the issue of Rooney not being available for a couple (so you play Welbeck or another midfielder and one up front) and the question about Wilshere. But the point is there is experience there in some of the younger players.

Just play United!

- - - - - - - - Hart
Jones Ferdinand Smalling Cole

- - - - - - Carrick
- - - Scholes Cleverley

- -Welbeck Rooney Young

Wilshere can join if he's fit and Sturridge can come in for Rooney while he's banned.

Scholes at the Euros means injecting guaranteed quality in the team. Scholes is a veteran, plays at the highest level week in week out. Knows how to handle the pressure.

Cleverley shouldn't even be near the first team at the moment. I expect Cleverley to be involved in the preparations for the WC, but for the upcoming Euros? Not a chance. This is not the time to experiment.

Walcott is fecking gash and should not be anywhere near the England squad, same goes for Milner.

I know that's just off the top of your head, but Walcott? What's he done to get in to an England side?

He hasnt done too badly for England on occasion has he? He is quick, he has scored some goals. But yes, swapping Johnson for Walcott is an obvious tweak.

I do suspect that Walcott will improve from what we have seen of late tho.

Milner just for versatility.

OK OK OK. Leave the top of my head alone, it was a tiring weekend.

Starters:
Hart, Richards, Smalling, Ferdinand, Cole, Wilshere, Carrick, Scholes, Welbeck, Sturridge(Rooney) Young .

Bench & Squad:
Jones, Cleverley, Baines, Cahill, Walker, Johnson, Bent, Walcott, Gerrard, Oxlade-Chamberlain, some goalie.

That squad won't get far in the competition, sorry.

Did anyone else notice when all the sheninagins was going on near the tunnel after the game, Scholes was walking off the pitch ignoring it all and Dagleish just walked up to him and put his arm round him and walked off with him down the tunnel. I can only imagine he was saying brilliant game Scholesy you tore us a new one :-)

Youngsters should be promoted, as long as they're good enough, but an old hand like Scholesy would bring the whole team up a notch. I can understand wanting to put aside older players that don't really add anything to the side anymore, such as Terry, Barry and Lampard, but Scholes is unique.

I agree with this. Think he could have the same effect for England almost as he's had since coming back for United - fitting in seamlessly and providing an intelligent, ball retaining, poised, classy presence in the middle.

He deserves to go and I hope he does. Could be a bizarre summer for that United midfield 4 from '99 if Scholes plays at the Euros and Beckham and Giggs play in the Olympics...

I'm so tired of reading this argument here.

It doesn't even add up.

Why would you use those 3 or so games in the summer to prepare for the World Cup?

Why not use the 2 years qualifying games? Any experiments done this summer will likely not provide answers for 2 years time anyway.

I actually think England have a better chance of making some sort of impact in 2012 anyway - right hemisphere, right climate and a good mix of experienced and young players.

Never write international tournaments off - they're too special and it's unfair on the likes of Rooney, who needs to shine in a tournament soon and may never have a better chance.

There is no point in getting Scholesy out of retirement and then playing him out of position. What have Gerrard and Lampard done this season to warrant their position in the team but if I had to play one of them I would play Gerrard. I have been more impressed with Parker & Carrick to be honest. It will be a disaster if Barry goes to the Euros over Carrick.
I fully expect both to make it if Harry ever takes over. Milner is the one man who will be in serious danger.

Who 'despised' Paul Scholes?.
Seriously? You really think him being shifted out of position for the sake of the vastly inferior Lampard and Gerard wasn't being despised in any way? That the press and England fans getting on his back and claiming he only ''saved his best football for United and not the England shirt'', during that same period, wasn't being despised?

And why are you still wittering on about this? Scholes is on record as saying he didn't retire from England because he was played out of position or felt under appreciated.
I bet you believe there are fairies at the bottom of your garden too........

Do you actually know what despised means? No one's despised Paul Scholes...

And yes, I believe Scholes since he's reiterated it several times - he didn't retire because he was getting played on the left.

That squad won't get far in the competition, sorry.

Won't even get out of the group most likely. France have some very good players, Sweden are solid and Ukraine are the hosts. Although that's probably near the strongest line up anyway.

Do you actually know what despised means? .
DESPISE, SCORN, DISDAIN, to regard as unworthy of one's notice or consideration. Should I go on?

It seems you think playing your best midfielder out of position to accommodate vastly inferior ones equals to honoring him.

And yes, I believe Scholes since he's reiterated it several times - he didn't retire because he was getting played on the left.
Ergo you believe everything you're told by footballers......

Ive been in this camp too. The old guard are unlikely to play a major part at the next world cup, so ditch them now and lets build a new, young team which can hopefully compete for the next decade or more.

Holy shit, we've signed Hart!?! :wenger:

It's actually more like 'loathe' and, as I say, I don't think anyone feels that way towards Scholes.
Loathe is just one of the many meanings the word has. It' prety ovbiosu no one loathed Scholes. But it can't be denied that he wasn't treated with the respect he deserved. There not many national sides round that would treat a midfielder of Scholes' ilk the way the England management treated him after Hoddle was sacked.

Here are his own words on the matter:

No, [playing out of position] was never a problem. I played on the left for United I don’t know how many times. I probably had my most successful time scoring goals in that position so it was never a problem.

Who, of the 'old guard', are even near the team? Lampard, Rio and Gerrard have all been out for ages.

The side is looking very young anyway - Hart, Walker, Cahill, Wilshere and Welbeck are all pretty likely starters and Jones, Smalling, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Cleverley and Sturridge are all likely/possibles to make the squad.

I think its too early to start speculating about the future of Scholes. Im of the view that he seem to be enjoying his football at the moment. Lets see what happens with the Premier League, if we win, he could make a decision about playing on.
