When he came on against Barca in the Champions League it was a sad realisation. That this wasn't a game changing sub. But but a chance to give Scholesy his last game, to say good bye.

But I couldn't be more happier to have him back, I cannot believe the shifts he is putting in and how good he is looking. I genuinely thought he was done and dusted after a dissappointing end to last season.

Great to have Scholesy back.

He played a beautiful 1-2 with Giggs for his header. What a goal that would have been. Has run our midfield and has caused us to look like the home team no matter where we play.

I actually think he might still be in retirement had Cleverley, Anderson and Fletcher not had long term injuries. Regardless, so happy to have him back. He actually looks better than he did last year.

Watch all the journo's who called this a desperate move from us clamour for his selection to the Euro's, just watch.

Paul has simply been awesome since he's came back. Gerrard couldn't get anywhere near him today.

The thought of him and Cleverley in the midfield together is just

Scholes has looked better in these last few weeks since his return that he has in either of the last 2 seasons (I can't remember past that)

I can't believe he'll quit at the end of the season not when he's putting in this level of performances against this level of opposition

My fav player in the 90s. Chuffed to have him back. His legs has gone. But his passing, composure, positioning, timing of his runs are still there. An brilliant to have around for younger players to emulate like pogba, cleverly, ando, tunners. Similar to blanc in early 2000s for younger defenders like brown, rio, tweety, sheasy back then.

On current form, I think Scholes should take one last hurrah at the Euros. He's good enough.

Aye, tremendous piece of play, that. And I was chuffed to finally see Scholesy hit another 50-60 yard diagonal that needed to be nearly inch perfect to reach the player on the left wing (can't recall who it wound up with)... That's the only thing I've missed from him since his return.

Not sure I understand those who say he looked knackered and past it last season, though. I was never in doubt that he had more to give... I actually think he had periods after 08 where he looked like he was declining, a lot more than last season.

He's got to sign another year hasn't he!? He's playing so well. It's almost unbearable having to wait for Cleverly to come back, they will be great together. I hope Saf try's it but it surely means going with 433

it was Valencia - both brilliant

Although you normally fiercely criticise those who walk away from the international game, ie: Paul Robinson

It's not about that - it's about representing your country on the world stage. Even if your country gets knocked out early, that alone should be enough.

With your attitude, players playing for the 'smaller' nations shouldn't even bother showing up.

He should go to the Olympics. He'll take the piss out of the under 23s. Would be fun seeing Giggs, Beckham and him.

Those who walk away for lame reasons like him I will always diss....

As for Scholes, he did his bit for England then left when they no longer appreciated him. They have no right to benefit from him now. Especially at a time when they've been stupid enough to lose a manager a few months before a major tournament.

My attitude rather is players fresh from retirement do not need to taint their legacy by helping out those who despised them when they were willing and most able to help out.

Something totally unrelated to what you've claimed above....

Unlike most on here I'm a fierce advocate for international football. However I do not belong to the school that thinks you must play for your nation no matter how shabbily they've treated you when you are willing and able to serve them. & I'm talking really shabby here, not the Paul Robinson kind...

The one thing I can't understand is why opposing teams aren't closing him down quick. Liverpool has been a game in the last few seasons where scholes has struggled because of the high intensity of their play but yesterday they stood of him. Stoke did the same. I just don't get why. I can understand Chelsea as they don't really play that way but those two and I think Bolton were the other team he's played is just weird. If you give him time he'll own the midfield. oh well, let's hope the other teams we play do the same.

Who 'despised' Paul Scholes?

And why are you still wittering on about this? Scholes is on record as saying he didn't retire from England because he was played out of position or felt under appreciated.

But then you read the rest of the article and see that he would probably go with Parker as captain and take Lampard as well. Boo that.

I have to say (a little ashamed) that I didn't like seeing Scholes' name on the team-sheet last season, I thought his legs had gone despite still being able to play a beautiful hollywood ball.

But right now, I'd have him as pretty much my first name on the team-sheet, add to that Redknapp's comments today and I seriously wouldn't be surprised to see him convince Scholes to play in the Euros and I think he'd light them up. So just what has happened? Is the 6 month rest the best thing that has ever happened to him?

Apparently SAF said that last time Scholes was out for a period he came back and was better than ever. So it seems this man only benefits form being out from the game for a while. And I don't think speed is essential at all when it comes to Scholes. He keeps the ball in position by using his team mates as a wall to ping-pong the ball. And what better partner could you have than Michael Carrick? These two players awareness on the pitch should be compared to having an IQ of the greatest minds who ever lived on this planet.

Torn on whether I'd like him to go to the euros to be honest, I think he deserves to be the main man in midfield for England for once and him and Carrick in midfield for England would be fantastic.

Wilshere + Scholes in midfield would be incredible to watch.

I think Harry will ask him to go, and I think he will say yes.

I hope we can get another season out of him. I dont want his last games to be in an England shirt.

So wrong.

Me too... but that's just me being completely selfish. If Scholesy wanted to go to the Euro's and prove himself one last time on an International stage... I wouldn't begrudge him that at all.

Also, just imagine if he did a Zidane and got them to the final... (highly unlikely... but still, it would be remarkable).

If he did play for a Redknapp England side, you have to think that 'Arry would play him in the same position as he does for United.

feck that, I hope he doesn't play for anyone else but us. They should have recalled him for the country about 7 years ago, rather than wait until he's been retired for 6 months and made a sudden return to his domestic club, aged 37.

Obviously if he wants to do that, then fair enough I'll accept and support that, but otherwise I want him as far from that shirt as possible.

Just because he didn't whine to the press about it Carragher style doesn't mean it's not true.

I have a little theory that explains it. It's that last season...

...you were talking out your arse

Dont want him playing for England again. I'd understand if he wants to have a last go but i'd rather he didnt.

Apparently SAF said that last time Scholes was out for a period he came back and was better than ever.

Right enough actually, he had that prolonged period out with an eye injury and then he came back and was so good he was nominated for the Ballon D'or for only the second time in his career. Surprised no-one picked up on how he benefits from long rests really.

It's a privelege to watch him play. That dummy for Rooney's hat-trick chance was  Such good awareness.

There is no point in getting Scholesy out of retirement and then playing him out of position. What have Gerrard and Lampard done this season to warrant their position in the team but if I had to play one of them I would play Gerrard. I have been more impressed with Parker & Carrick to be honest. It will be a disaster if Barry goes to the Euros over Carrick.
