Not arguing anything. Just saying I think the spirit of the idea of home-grown players is diluted by the rule. That's all.

For the UEFA, homegrown isn't a thing. They have to categories, club-trained and association-trained. And it makes a lot more sense than homegrown.

Guys can I ask a really dumb question here. Seeing as we can't talk aobut
Can we keep all this homegrown chat to either a different thread, or wait to at least something is official.

So what ARE we allowed to talk about in the Paul Pogba thread in the transfer forum? Serious question. I'm really beginning to wonder. Is this thread literally just to discuss the transfer when it happens? When news breaks? And nothing else. If it is I will take my leave.

At the risk of going slightly off topic... :nervous:

Why does it matter if he's homegrown or not? Could we have a lack of homegrown players for the CL or something?

I guess only because people take pride in the number of homegrown players in the team, not that we are at the risk of having too few homegrown players in the squad anytime soon.
But like Mr.Mujac (?) said above, the definition of homegrown player is quite artificial so I do find the debate a bit uninteresting to be honest.

Nail on the head. I see two very different players there. I'd always prefer a Keane type player to a Vieria one. And as I said ages ago Pogba reminds me of Viera.

Vieira was hardly just a physical brute alone. Guy was a fantastic footballer, much like Keane. Pogba seems incredibly dynamic to me; incredibly physical, yes, but also someone who can be key to attacks with plenty of assists and some long-range goals.

In our squad of 25 players for the Premier League, only 17 are allowed to be not homegrown, so it would have been useful to have Pogba be homegrown as well.

I don't think we're currently in any danger of a problem on that front, but it's nice to avoid.

Every player we have that counts as home grown (according the rules of the PL, that all the PL clubs agreed to when the rule was set up) is a good thing in that it gives us more flexibility when it comes to meeting the rules each season.

I remember when the rule was first announced, the clubs were given a years notice, plus they had all been involved in agreeing to the rule. There were a lot of people who thought clubs were going to have a difficult time complying with the rules, I think Arsenal was a popular target at the time. End of the day, I don't think there have been many issues with clubs meeting the rule.

That's just splitting hairs for me. Obviously they were different players, but both had similar strengths, played in a similar positions and did the same job for the most part. In an ere before "defensive/attacking midfielders", when midfielders where expected to do both they were the best and most would consider them at the very least similar in style and approach.

My point is that a player like Pogba, who is physical, creative and full of energy is what most people would consider "dynamic". You could argue a player like Keane would be less so, since he was more defensive that creative for the most part.

The fee is ridiculous but that's the way football is going so it is what it is. I can't see a better option for us if we're looking for a player to really offer us drive, ability and energy in the middle of the pitch.

It's the transfer forum, so surely we should talk about any news relating to the transfer - this homegrown stuff is irrelevant as he isn't a Utd player yet.

When he is fine.

The question of whether a target counts as homegrown is probably the most on-topic this thread has been in days.

Agree. People seem to also forget how quick he is with the ball at his feet, for a midfielder. He thrives in counter-attacks and that's where people will see the best of him, imo.

I haven't really paid attention to reports lately - how much are we supposedly paying to Juventus and to Raiola now?

He's Muslim, I doubt he'll have any satanic symbolism
Lol

WTF

It doesn't symbolize satan, it is part of our club badge, part of our nickname the red devils, our mascot Fred the red is a little devil, it symbolizes the club and nothing else. It doesn't have any religious connotation or meaning at all.

If he signs he will play with on it Jersey every match, train with on his jersey every day, he will be called a red devil, he has been before when he was in the academy, but now the man that has pokemon balls, zebra stripes and jaguar print in his hair wouldn't have the symbol in his hair because he is muslim. Do you even know how fecking retarded that sounds ?

EDIT: Damn white text !

Can't see him being ready to seriously contribute until early September at best maybe? Some vacation he is having...

Some of our players have less than 8 days of training and they will probably start on Sunday.

That's true, on the other hand despite his impressive build sometimes he acts like a wimp compared to Keane and Vieira. Pogba isn't always willing to put his body on the line and he can be thrown to the ground quite easily but he has the merit of not staying on the ground.

Yeah, agreed. But as you said we are long way off from reaching the point where it matters in our transfer business, as opposed to the situation at City.

Ronaldo is also still on vacation so it is not excessive. His vacation planning would have been aligned to the euros and Juve start of the season, not to a possible transfer to us. He has had a very long season, he will have a very long season ahead of him, he needs a decent break to relax and recharge his battery.

We will have more use of Pogba if he is fully rested both physically and mentally than one that is rushed in the team. Especially in England, with 2 cup competitions, next to the league and the EL and no winter break it will be a very long and demanding season. He should be fully rested before starting it.

Nobody else think it's weird that despite all the speculation there still hasn't been anything official?

I did get the holiday factor, but surely with that ending tomorrow, you would have thought we would be saying something.

way too much, that is all should know but it is ok because we have plenty and are earning it faster than we can spend it, so it is all good.

I love the way many posters in here loosely interpret clear rules and guidelines re 'home-grown' status in whatever way they please.

I wonder what they're like when they get caught doing 85mph on the motorway - "Well, the speed limit is an arbitrary rule, isn't it?
What does 'speed' really mean anyway?"

Apparently this contract is more complex than the TPP trade agreement, so its natural that it will take time to complete. Have some patience.

Theymight aswell call the club Dithering United. It always takes like forever till we get some official communication. Look at Zlatan, Dortmund had confirmed it, Zlatan had confirmed it, the whole world know already a long time ago but still took the club a long time untill they made it official. I don't know what it up with that but the speed with which we announce things has been bothering me for years.

The biggest clue will be to see if Pogba joins Juve on their pre season or not. If he doesn't he is 100% coming.

It's not up to you to decide what we can talk about you maniac.

It doesn't matter anyway, United should be okay in terms of homegrown players (I think it's more noticeable in Europe, which isn't the priority right now.)

I only respond to the metric system, so that rule is definitely arbitrary and non-binding.

BOSS ON SUMMER SIGNINGS
"We got a young central defender that needs time to be a top one, but he has top potential and we believe a lot in him. We brought Micki here, a player that we know the quality he has. We got a super striker [in Zlatan] and we are going to get a very good midfield player, so I am happy with the balance of my squad, I’m happy with the effort that the club has, and is still putting in for us."

It's pretty much confirmed then. We're signing Paul fecking Pogba. My only worry is who will partner him, nobody aside from a 35 year old Carrick is standing out. I personally think we should cut Herrera loose and bring in someone else.

With Schweinsteiger apparently on his way out, why would you cut Herrera loose as well. What do you know about our current midfielders that Mourinho doesn't ?

Mourinho's comments should put any remaining doubts to rest. Expect this to be wrapped up by Monday.
