Jose Mourinho tight-lipped on Paul Pogba deal

"I don't confirm and I don't deny," Mourinho told reporters at a press conference this morning. "I cannot tell you.

"I don't think it is correct to speak about players of other clubs. My directors did a fantastic work to do 75% of the job I ask them to do. I gave them a few options. We have just 25% to do until 31 August.

"We are in great conditions to have a great market. We are calm. We have three faces to fill the profile. I am confident Mr Woodward will get the player we need to get a good balance."

1. What does the part I highlighted mean!? That there are 2 other possibilities if the Pogba deal falls through.

2. He also talks about the deadline day of 31st August but clearly he won't wait that long for Pogba to make up his mind?

I've been so confident about this signing of late, but i'm just so wary of making myself as vulnerable to this only to be gutted like we have been with all the guys already mention (Vidal, Thiago etc) I would love it to be announced tomorrow, but something tells me if it is going to happen it would be next week sometime, but I don't care as long as its announced and we are not left hanging out to dry again!
Even at this stage where the media are telling us it's down to the fine touches, I still wouldn't put money on it and it wouldn't suprise me if there was a late hitch in the deal

But if it's just Jose's quotes that are worrying you, I'm pretty sure he is just being coy and doesn't want to muddy any waters

Means we've signed 3 players of the 4 we wanted. Not that complicated.
Well you and me have different interpretations.

I think the percentage talk was the fact we've signed 3 of the 4. The faces is that we have 3 options that fit the criteria of the 4th signing.

He means we already have 3 of the players he wants in already, Pogba is the last major piece of the puzzle

3 faces to fill the midfielder we need. Pogba/Matuidi/Gomes.

Clearly Pogba is first choice, and we've made contact with the other 2 to see if they are interested.

Pogba is about 95% done anyway. Expect an announcement after the tour IMO.

No surprise to see @Polite Poster in here downplaying Pogba's incoming. Like a lot of blues he's been predicting Pogba to City for over a year now so face saving nonsense about fees is now the default fallback position for blues with their noses out of joint

I think he's nailed on for City tbh. Yaya out, Pogba in.

This is my feeling. I have a suspicion that this deal was agreed in principle last summer.

From the closed Pogba thread:

"Pogba's move to Juventus was allegedly on the advice of Viera who of course played there. And as that didn't work out too badly for the lad he may well listen to his idol again about moving to City. Plus, of course he would get to play alongside another of the players he looks up to, a certain Yaya Toure.

Of course it may all be wishful thinking on my part but I think this lad will be playing in sky blue next season"

Etc etc.

Anyhoo....Pogba

I'd be incredibly surprised if it is net. I can't recall a time when wages have been declared as the after-tax amount. Not in the Premier League anyway.

£220,000 net I heard. Couldn't give a fudge, will make it all the harder for Madrid to poach him in the next 2-3 years. We hardly thought we'd pay a record fee for a player then save on his wages, he was ways going to be the record earner in the Prem.

I hope it's sooner than that.

I think I've yet to see any of our opposition posters saying that Pogba is a decent player. All we've seen is everyone saying how terrible of a buy it'll be, and they are more happy with their own transfer dealings.

Love it.

He is a fine player and would improve any team. I'm disappointed he wont be coming to City but understand that we need to strengthen in several areas which probably makes such a financial commitment impossible (FFP)

Stupid as the money is, this purchase is an important statement of intent for the club. I really hope it happens.
Yeah, money in football has been fecked for ages. Not bothered, as you said, it's a serious sign of intent from the club. I'll be delighted if we can pull it off.

City clearly have other priorities and I trust Pep to prevail Pogba or no Pogba :)

He'll have given Ed several options (presumably ranked in order of preference). If the Pogba deal fell through for whatever reason he'd have to move onto the next, which would take some time. He mentions the deadline only to emphasise that there's still plenty of time to complete our transfer businesss.

I've forgotten that still exists.

Just noticed that the Caf vote for Pogba is also 75/25!

Guardian Journo Andy Hunter: Juve looking Sissoko after Pogba to MUFC is done. It just seems to be common knowledge now that the deal is almost done

Really hope Di Marzio can shed some more light on this today.

£35m for Sissoko. Thirty five million pound sterling for Moussa Sissoko.

I was thinking about if/when it gets announced. Surely they'd ant Mourinho next to him when he's holding the shirt etc?

Shame you can't read the now deleted thread (over 3000 pages) on bluemoon regarding them signing Pogba. It was littered with em wanking themselves silly at the prospect.

In fact, I remember one poster saying....while United are chasing that crock Gundogan and a over the hill Schweinsteiger, we are after world class players like Pogba.
They deleted it?

I hope it's sooner than that.
Perhaps an "agreement has been made" statement, but Pogba is going to be on holiday for a few more weeks and Mourinho is away in China. All the proper promo stuff won't happen until we've returned.

No, it means that there are three players that we could sign for the 4th position. Pogba probably is one of them, the other two could as well be bullshit.

Basically what @Riz says. I understood it that way too.

Yep that's what I was thinking too.

That there are 3 players he can choose from for the 4th signing. But that must be mind games, but what does it do.
And yes clearly Pogba is first choice but essentially Jose saying that even if Pogba doesn't sign I will have a back up. The name of Matuidi being thrown around is fine back up, but don't want Gomes anywhere near us. Not sure who would be 3rd choice.

But I really hope we do get our main man. Its really a no-brainer even with those claiming the £100 pound being thrown around is insane, for me the only thing that defines how much a player is “worth” is the price a club is willing to pay for their services. Football transfers are a market where supply and demand really is king. There’s no metric. There’s no “Well, Cristiano Ronaldo cost £80 million in 2009, so adjust that for inflation and that’s how much the most destructive force in world football is worth.”
If a player is super-marketable, sadly, that is borne out in the financial investment it is worth making in them. Pogba comes with plenty of weight on that front. It is not so much that he will sell shirts (though he would), but that he can front marketing campaigns. He will become the face of United over the next few years of that I have no doubt, both relating to off and on the pitch matters.

I've been trying to remain calm about this transfer, keeping a cool head in this heatwave.

Jose fecking Mourinho
Bastian fecking Schweinsteiger
Zlatan fecking Ibrahimovic
...

Paul fecking Pogba.

To put the numbers into perspective, £35m for Sissoko, £30m for Deeney and £25m for Wijnaldum. Pogba for £100m is an absolute bargain.

£35m for Sissoko. Thirty five million pound sterling for Moussa Sissoko.
This is why the fee doesn't bother me for Pogba. It's strange that we all knew the market was about to be massively inflated primarily due to the new BPL tv deal and the Chinese clubs but we're arguing over £100m for Pogba when it's £35m for Sissoko, £30m+ for Deeney, £38m for Ighalo and £32m for Benteke.

Clearly it was wishful thinking on my part but ho hum.

A lot of City fans have been crowing for over a year that Pogba joining was some sort of inevitability. Funny how the "priorities" have changed now he's on the verge of coming back to OT. You either got priced out or Pogba didn't fancy it are more likely scenarios.

Must go. The Bonucci thread is calling:)

I almost forgot that City fans have been telling us for the last two years that he was going there. Bluemoon even had a massive thread on Pogba where people were absolutely convinced he was joining. Now all of a sudden he's overrated and they're not bothered that he's going to United.

I think he does have higher technical skills but let's see IF we get him and in the years to come.
Toure scored woldies and dragged City to the title. He also enjoyed high scoring seasons. Pogba is yet to even hit double figures in terms of goals. I don't see how he is judged to have superior technical skills. In what aspects?

Jesus, that is one hell of a downgrade

When Pogba scores his first screamer against city I will literally tear my foreskin off and tag every damn City poster on the Caf with endless mockery.

We overspending for Pogba because

a- he's one of the best allrounders in midfield
b- he's young
c- we're out of the CL
d- we are competing for him with Real Madrid
e- Juventus is not an easy club to deal with

If we aim for other players then we would probably have to pay 20% more because we are Manchester United and another 10-15% (mostly in salaries) more because we're out of the CL. Now we can decide. Should we get Sissoko or another Fellaini for 35-40m each or Pogba for 100m?

Who cares, we are in for Paul Pogba, not his very distant copy. But I would be gutted if I were a Juventus fan.
I'm just astonished they'd do that. Hope it happens though as I'd find it funny.

Many seem to think it doesn't but it clearly does.
But you City fans were on here boasting about your massive revenues after your China deal and how ffp isn't a concern for you now?
I don't get this. Apparently Juve will accept 92m if we take care of the agent fee. That's 6m more than Bale.
Was there ever a time that Pogba wasn't going to be a world record transfer when he leaves Juve? Even his wages aren't that unreasonable if the 18% tax is true.

I think that Mourinho joining Utd changed everything. Not because he is a great manager but his relationship with Mina Raiola.

I don't think there is any conflict in 'priorities' and being priced out. City have a budget for transfers and buying Pogba would leave us unable to make other additions we therefore walked away.
