Do you want Pogba for £100 million?

I still think we will need a solid RW in order to win the league, but Pogba and Ibra will definitely help bring the fear factor back to United.

Mahrez would seem a good option there. He may be gettable if Vardy stays.

Do you think there could be any negative effects from signing both? Obviously both could help to galvanise the squad, lift the team in a manner much the same as Cantona. However, both will expect to be in the line-up week in week out. Ibra as good as he is could decline in some manner be it fitness wise or simply treating this stint as a final payday while Pogba may prove to be less than the lifesaver many expect. We could conceivably be left with two Rooney's shoehorned for half the season.
How is it going to be a problem to fit those two into the squad? Firstly they play different positions. Secondly didnt we play like 60 games last season? We need depth and rotation.

We're not actually going to have another ridiculous saga here are we? Can't imagine, for a second, that Pogba would come back here. He's probably the most sought after midfield talent in football at the moment. He would have his pick of top clubs if he wanted to leave and I really think he'd choose a fair few of them before us, including staying at Juve. I hope we won't really waste our time going after him all summer, just to drive up the price for someone else or get him a big re-signing fee.

Is Raiola the new Mendes?

I would welcome him back to be honest. As some has pointed, I've been waiting for a solid midfield general signing. I have had high hopes with the signings of Bastian, Schneiderlin and Herrera but LVG proved me wrong. I just hope in the coming season, they would prove me wrong. I hope for this to go thru. Come on Jose and Woody! You can do it!

Midfield trio of Herrera-Schneiderlin-Pogba woule be awesome!

Someone said he looks like a Sopranos extra, thought that was spot on. ;)

It obviously wouldn't be, just as it would be a problem fitting Bailley in the same lineup with Schweinsteiger.

Some ridiculous post in here.

If we want him, we have a massive chance of signing him.

It does depend on what the competition do - and how much they are willing to pay him against what we are.

If the take-home package we offer is 25% more than anyone else - no matter who - we probably get him.

I am sure Pogba would jump at the chance to come back here, earn mega money, win a few trophies and close his unfinished business.

What you don't get? He won the league yes, but our midfield was still shit and has been for years. Not giving Pogba enough chances was a big failure from his side, and us buying him back for a world record amount surely emphasize that. Nobody likes to be reminded of their failures, and this will be a big reminder for the one time he got it wrong. I don't see that as a fantasy at all.

You think SAF sees himself as a failure in any way?

He had a management style & a way of man-managing people, that style made him the most successful manager in English history. He will be certain he did the right thing with Pogba and his responsibilty was to win trophies with United, not to make sure the 2 following managers did the right things in the transfer markets.

Pogba left, SAF continued to win and retired. Anything that happens after that point is completely immaterial to him.

Well it looks as though Griezmann has now made this thread the thread.

Not happening. Not sure he wants to re live memories of him crying in the managers office again!

Don't do it to yourself, lads.

You know under Moyes and LVG I'd have agreed with you, though in saying that LVG just pulled off some mega-signings (two high profile ones didn't work is all) but with Mourinho in charge at United. I wouldn't be surprised at anything.

That's cute. at 24 Gerrard was voted Uefa club footballer of the year ahead of all time greats like Pirlo, Kaka, Seedorf (basically whole Milan team), Ballack, Lampard etc
This makes Pogba shit, I guess? As far as I can remember, Liverpool won CL that year. Probably influenced the vote.

I still believe Pogba is world class.

It wouldn't surprise me if we pursued Messi, Ronaldo, Ibra, Pogba et al. Basically anyone is gettable even without the CL this year.

To counteract my own negativity, forgetting the idea that he'd not leave a CL club to come back here. If we did get him, and Zlatan, it'd be huge. We'd instantly become a top team again with those two pulling the strings, and I see similarities in their play which make me think they'd really enjoy playing together. Add a good winger and we'd win the league, even if City sign Auba.

I feel he's overrated and overcosted, but we can afford it and he'd be a massive, potentially long term upgrade to midfield. Feck it, muppet hat on. Would be an amazing set of transfers if Jose manages to reinforce all our weaker points in one window (CB-done, CM-Pogba?, RW, ST-Zlatan?).

If pogba is overrated with all those things he have shown, I cannot think of a word to describe depay.

Nah seriously though, Pogba is really good but I've seen a surprising amount of games (for someone of his ability/reputation) where he get's frustrated and makes pointless shots from huge distances or goes into his shell and provides little more than crab stuff lesser players like Cleverly do rather than the mix of control and forward drive you'd expect.

Clubs have brought back players in the past to various degrees of success. Matic & Kagawa are recent examples that spring to mind. However, Pogba has one of the most despicable agents who is constantly manipulating the media and it's only in the last 6 months that we've stopped reading articles or interviews from Pogba about how mufc were bad/immoral/wrong in his treatment et cetera. Yes, Pogba's an undeniable talent but I'm afraid that he would come back and believe he's bigger than the club which would be toxic for the dressing room. There's other players out there that could improve us and for much cheaper.

If it is true he begged for game time after signing a pre-contract with Juve, maybe he was having second thoughts. Raiola would be pushing him, and as a teenager, he would likely be full of uncertainty and anxiety at such a big move.
Regardless of history, United spent a small amount last year. New tv money will be added to the coffers.
Compare what value we would get against recent transfers, and this would be a great transfer.
James to Madrid, De Bruyne and Sterling to City, Di Maria to us and then PSG.
Pogba is a better player than those, at slight premium in price, in a more cash-rich time.
For the upgrade that would bring to our midfield, it is a no-brainer. Just having double figures from a midfielder, and a decent set-piece taker in the squad would elevate us to challenging for the league.
Again, Gerrard covered all these prerequisites and the rest if the Liverpool team brought him down. So I reject that it will make us title challengers

I dont watch Serie A - to be honest I havent watched anything of him on YouTube either. Im going on a very limited amount of first hand evidence and a lot on reports / reputation.

The thing with Pogba for me is he represents my burning desire for a really top quality player in the middle of the park. I dont know how long Ive been yearning for such a signing to be honest, it goes back years. I remember many threads about our non-existent midfield back in the olden days, the kinds of threads that speculated about whether Anderson would come back from injury and be like a new signing. For many years we didnt get anyone in that position at all, in recent years we have signed quite a few but none of them have been quite as satisfying as I was really looking for. Like trudging through the desert with no water, on the verge of dying, and then finding a few leaves with some condensation on them: enough to stave off death for a few hours, but not the litre of cool water I had been dreaming of.

I do hope, and still have some confidence, that Schneiderlin will kick on and have a better season next year than he did this year, in which case I will upgrade him from leaf with condensation on it to small glass of old, sun-warmed water with dust and some sand floating in it. Probably same with Herrera - I havent given up hope him being a lot better for us under a new manager. Maybe if both of these things happened next season my midfielder cravings will die down.

In a way you can trace this all the way back to the retirement of Keane, and the search for that absolutely top drawer, battling, leader and all-action midfielder to replace him. I love the idea of a midfield general and Pogba, as I understand it, has the capacity to be that player.

But as I said I havent actually seen much of him and it may be that there are other alternatives who could play that role for us too. I think I posted something similar to this in the Vidal thread a few years ago. I dont think Pogba is going to come but whenever we are linked to a central midfielder of this ilk I will always be excited.

I've now heard everything!

Ogden's United contacts dried up completely last summer, he was clueless. This whole thing smacks of guesswork based on Raiola also being Zlatan's agent and Mourinho wanting to sign Pogba when he was at Chelsea. Not to mention the clicks it will generate.

Mahrez would seem a good option there. He may be gettable if Vardy stays.
I was thinking that'd be the other way. That he'd be easier to get if Vardy goes. Based on Ranieri saying they're all free to go but he hopes they stay one more year. Remove one important part of the puzzle and the rest would be more inclined to head elsewhere before a potentially disappointing season for Leicester causes their personal stock to drop.

I can buy into this analogy! For me Pogba would be a water cooler, or even a case of cold beer!

I don't know much about Taylor other than he seems to love to get a reaction. Ogden has been a bit hit or miss since Moyes though. I don't know how reliable his links to the club are anymore.

Did shit just get real? Both Indy and Guardian reporting that we're in for The Pog

Danny Taylor is still the best authority on Utd. Has been for years.

Err but we have the best goalkeeper in the world, the joint best defense in the PL (before reinforcements) and Potentially world class options up front with already solid midfield options at worst under Mourinho's coaching. Pogba would make us title fave's IMO if coupled with Ibra and others to come.
Our "best defence" was courtesy of playing 2 DMC in front of the best Goalkeeper in the world. If Pogba comes, we cannot play a Van Gaal esque short passing safe system so it won't be the same. Also Pogba won't be a DMC in front of the defence. So Blind and Smalling, as they did many times last season, will get exposed and leak goals when attacked more frequently. Who are the World Class options upfront? Liverpool had Torres who is a better forward than all of ours. At his pomp he was top 3 strikers in the world IMO. Also our CM isn;t the level of a Xavi Alonso and Mascherano. considering that sort of team only challenged for the league once with Reina in goal, evidence would suggest we need a bit more. But then Jose could be the leveller :smirk:

He's a massive step up from Jamie Jackson in terms of Guardian writers and is probably a level higher than Ogden as well (who is also fairly reliable or was a while back.)

No chance in hell. Not this window, at least. Calm down.

Even if he comes in, I can not see him being here for long. Real/Barca written all over him
