Do you want Pogba for £100 million?

If we are really serious about making our mark in the transfer market this summer, i'd suggest we go for both Pogba and Griezmann. Yes, both would cost a mini-fortune, but we are the richest club in the world, right? Pogba is the type of dynamic midfielder we need. He has everything in his locker, literally everything. I remember watching him in the youth team thinking, this guy is headed for the top, no doubt. Will be extremely difficult to get him back, but the transfer makes sense right now. Would Pogba feel he has unfinished business with us? He's nothing more to win with Juve. Looks like Barcelona have other priorities. Real are well stocked in his position. Can't see him joining City. It's setup for us to break the Brittish transfer record on his this summer. Can see Pogba going for that. Why wouldn't he. Mourinho is there. Fergie is gone 3 years. We're already in talks with his agent regarding Ibra. Opportune time to open talks with Pogba, plus Juve i would think are ready to cash in on him. Four years is enough for a player like him in that league. Can see the PL being the place to be over the next few seasons. Over to you Woody.

affirmative. That must be what they are going by. He hasn't reached prime Stevie G levels yet he is world class, one of the best CM in the world and Stevie G was overrated etc
He's world class. Any player named in FIFA World XI must be considered world class. If you want to compare with Steve G, he featured in FIFA World XI when he was 5 years older than Pogba.

If it is true he begged for game time after signing a pre-contract with Juve, maybe he was having second thoughts. Raiola would be pushing him, and as a teenager, he would likely be full of uncertainty and anxiety at such a big move.
Regardless of history, United spent a small amount last year. New tv money will be added to the coffers.
Compare what value we would get against recent transfers, and this would be a great transfer.
James to Madrid, De Bruyne and Sterling to City, Di Maria to us and then PSG.
Pogba is a better player than those, at slight premium in price, in a more cash-rich time.
For the upgrade that would bring to our midfield, it is a no-brainer. Just having double figures from a midfielder, and a decent set-piece taker in the squad would elevate us to challenging for the league.

Most posters on here seem to regard Pogba as a cross between a fillet steak and Marilyn Monroe, but I wonder how many are Serie A watchers and how many are judging by his greatest hits on YouTube.

My memory of him from underage games at United is that he was capable of spectacular skills but didn't always influence games consistently. If he's going to be the mainstay of our midfield, he has to show up for every game.
I dont watch Serie A - to be honest I havent watched anything of him on YouTube either. Im going on a very limited amount of first hand evidence and a lot on reports / reputation.

The thing with Pogba for me is he represents my burning desire for a really top quality player in the middle of the park. I dont know how long Ive been yearning for such a signing to be honest, it goes back years. I remember many threads about our non-existent midfield back in the olden days, the kinds of threads that speculated about whether Anderson would come back from injury and be like a new signing. For many years we didnt get anyone in that position at all, in recent years we have signed quite a few but none of them have been quite as satisfying as I was really looking for. Like trudging through the desert with no water, on the verge of dying, and then finding a few leaves with some condensation on them: enough to stave off death for a few hours, but not the litre of cool water I had been dreaming of.

I do hope, and still have some confidence, that Schneiderlin will kick on and have a better season next year than he did this year, in which case I will upgrade him from leaf with condensation on it to small glass of old, sun-warmed water with dust and some sand floating in it. Probably same with Herrera - I havent given up hope him being a lot better for us under a new manager. Maybe if both of these things happened next season my midfielder cravings will die down.

In a way you can trace this all the way back to the retirement of Keane, and the search for that absolutely top drawer, battling, leader and all-action midfielder to replace him. I love the idea of a midfield general and Pogba, as I understand it, has the capacity to be that player.

But as I said I havent actually seen much of him and it may be that there are other alternatives who could play that role for us too. I think I posted something similar to this in the Vidal thread a few years ago. I dont think Pogba is going to come but whenever we are linked to a central midfielder of this ilk I will always be excited.

Don't think it's at all inconceivable that United can complete this transfer - especially if Mourinho is pushing for it.

He has been informally put up for sale by Juve and only United, City and PSG could afford the transfer fee and subsequent wages without first needing to shuffle the squad - à la Barca and Real.

I suspect Real will be our biggest challengers for him though - especially given that they have a transfer ban looming and want to get good business done in this window.

To all intents and purposes, with the exception of Ferguson, Pogba enjoyed his time at United - he was popular with the other youth players and staff at Carrington. He wouldn't need a great deal of time to settle and he knows he would be an integral part of Mourinho's plans.

All depends on whether Real come calling, even at our peak, we have struggled to go toe to toe with them on transfer targets so I reckon we'd miss out if they move for him.

Not even going to invest any time in this transfer after this post, it's just not going to happen.

Stop teasing me! This is one I can't get involved with, it would end me

Sure it's garbage but he does like the club, Mourinho is a big lure as is Zlatan (if it happens), and we're obviously prepared (almost desperate) to break the World record transfer fee.

If you're gonna spend 90m on anyone, Pogba would be a good choice. Pogba and Martial

Guardian sticking its ear in as well

I do think Pogba (whilst unrealistic) is more realistic than the usual ROnaldo, Bale crap

I'm not getting sucked into this one, not a chance. Have had my tongue bitten far too many times since 2009. Benzema, Ozil, Nasri, Sanchez, Hazard, Vidal, Lucas, Sneijder, Thiago, may be missing a few more names. Won't allow Pogba to be the next name on that list.

I suppose we have to pull one of these off eventually .. but I totally get your point

Come on in, the water's lovely.

I don't know about you but I've entered quite a few of those muppetfests with my eyes wide open, we'll aware it probably wouldn't end well. But at the end of the day, what else is there to do in the summer?

Gaitan. Transfer mill can be brutal.

Players at Pogba's level don't transfer with one club having a clear run at them unless they have a preference for a particular club (which doesn't seem to be the case here) or it is a done deal already. I'd wager that if we (or whoever) had a bid accepted that Madrid, PSG and probably City would be straight in for him.

I really want it to happen would love to see Pogba & TFM in midfield, that would scare me sh*tless if I was the oppostition.

However can't see it happening I think the press have jumped on Mourinho's previous desire to get him. We have probably enquired but surely Pogba would move to PSG, Madrid maybe even City over us due to the Champions league involvement.

This one has the feel or another long summer full of rumors that we want him and will bid but then out of nowhere Barca/Real/Bayern/PSG will wrap it up within a day or two. Along the way we will see reports of Ed Woodward bidding 3 million pounds less then the asking price and that he could have been ours but we botched it. Typical media nonsense.

If City have cooled their interest it probably means they've been told he wants to move elsewhere, probably Spain and he'll be waiting for Real/Barca. City wouldn't drop their interest of their own accord if they had a chance and they would've had a better chance than us.

I just feel the lack of CL football may hinder us signing colossus names such as Pogba, Greizemann, Bale, Neymar and the funniest, Messi. As much as we'd all love them, we have to be realistic, those 4 players have all participated in the CL Final in the last 2 seasons and they're teams are winning league titles, they would want to be at a team competing that the very top and we just haven't demonstrated that for the last 3 years now, it's a lot more of a risk signing for United now than it once was. Unless United are prepared to put down the extra big money as Real Madrid did with Kaka/Ronaldo and as Barca did with Neymar/Suarez, there is little point having these discussions.

Having said that these kind of players are good "heggs" and would make some delicious "omelettes".

feck sakes Daniel Taylor is one of the most reliable journalist around. If he's getting on Pogba bandwagon then I expect Madrid to get him.

It doesn't work like that and I don't recall that happening in History. I can't recall a CM making a team favorites for the league without other world class players around him. In his pomp, Stevie Me was one of the best around (although many here will deny it) he scored bucket loads, racked up assists, dominated midfields, put his foot in, grabbed games by the scruff of the neck, won games, drove the team, produced moments of magic. Everything we assume Pogba will do. Gerrard in fact had reached a level in the premier league that may take Pogba some time to reach (23 goals in all competitions for e.g.). Despite that, Liverpool were no title contender until they had Torres, Mascherano and Xavi Alonso or Sturrudge, Suarez, Sterling and Coutinho. You need more than a Pogba is what I am saying. He isn't Messi.

Err but we have the best goalkeeper in the world, the joint best defense in the PL (before reinforcements) and Potentially world class options up front with already solid midfield options at worst under Mourinho's coaching. Pogba would make us title fave's IMO if coupled with Ibra and others to come.

This will not happen, just like Thiago, Vidal and Hazard never happened.

I do want him here, but a little part of me feel it's a bit embarrasing breaking the transfer record on a player who was at the club and left on a free transfer because he felt he didn't get enough chances here. Maybe it's just me...

So if City gives up on him, chances of him signing for us goes up? What a joke of article.
It probably does, though. Not that he's coming here, just that if City don't want him, then our chances are slightly better.

I do think he's off to Barca/Madrid personally.

CITY DROP OUT OF POGBA RACE

Manchester United have a free run at Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba after Manchester City dropped out of the race, according to The Guardian.

United are now considering whether to firm up their interest in the France international, with Jose Mourinho a "long-term admirer" having previously attempted to sign him for Chelsea.

Pogba's agent, Mino Raiola, also represents Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who will sign a one-year deal with United, Sky sources understand.

The Guardian reports Pogba is valued at £65m, with City boss Pep Guardiola preferring to focus on other targets.

It definitely isnt.

But presumably you agree a little bit of embarrassment is worth it for a player of his stature?
