Rio Ferdinand’s pass of the tournament.

That pass...the weight, intellect to play into space and timing was just unbelievable. Sadly current manchester team that gets pegged back by Celta Vigo and Sevilla will never let him express himself.

Weird comment given the pass is as effective as it is precisely because Croatia had committed a lot of players forward. What good is a 50 metre pass if you're at the edge of your opponents penalty area?

What do you lean by that? Duchamp’s France is a page out of Mourinho’s book. They defend low, often leaves possesion to the opponents, midfield including Pogba are tasked to stay disciplined and focus on formation, balance and ballwinning.

The difference btween
pogba at United and France is that he expresses himself more (too much?) at United, not less.

It is only effective because Kyky is fast enough to get there too

I've been a Pogba pessimist, to be honest. He played a season in which I was convinced that he had gone down a level after he joined us. After Matci came in, I was sure he'd be twice the player last season, but it wasn't to be.

Closely observing his World Cup campaign I've come to believe that Pogba is incapable of being a central midfielder. He is an attacking midfielder through and through. His effort in defence was still barely above par this World Cup. It was the engine of Kante that made him look better than he actually is while defending. He needs a runner around him who can hustle and win him balls. I guess I kind of always knew this subconsciously but never fully accepted it as it seemed such a waste that a midfielder of his size, power and strength can only be used going forward. But in that second half, he really stepped it up defensively and it seemed for a moment that maybe he can be more than just an attacker.

Bottom line, Mourinho needs to set-up his midfield with ball-winners behind Pogba and let him wreak havoc going forward. Mourinho needs to get an engine beside Matic who has Herrera's hustle but with the strength and power like that of Kante. This is the only way he will succeed with us.

Very true - i think Jose has to build a better foundation for Pogba to shine, it's what he basically told him when he signed. There's no balance to the team so it makes things harder for him.

We need to sign a good a CB that can bring the ball into midfield so Pogba doesn't have to. Two good FBs that can help give the team some width and an extra dynamic going forward and also a RW to give our attack more balance and threat going forward. I think Fred is a good partner for him in midfield but I'm concerned about Matic he doesn't have the high energy engine that we need.

Sorry if this has already been cleared up, but do any French posters here know what was said on one of Pogba's social media videos last night when he was filming in France's dressing room?

Another player (I think it was Matuidi) was saying something in French about "Manchester" and "Juve".
Do you have the video? Some guys say Matuidi asked if he would want to come back to Juventus and Pogba is like "Ah, the old lady" etc... it sucks, but I would want to hear the whole piece myself to check this out.

Then yes, it's the content, and you should ask people speaking Italian as they speak in Italian.

Yes, against City we have been dominated almost the entire game, his winning performance was out of his midfielder's role. The win was welcomed but the performance wasn't and I'm pretty sure that someone as meticulous as Mourinho didn't like it one bit. The huge difference between Pogba's performances during the WC and that game, is that the former are repeatable, they are within the realm of a very good CM they are based on the basics of his role. For me that's how you judge a player, you wouldn't judge Thuram on his game against Croatia.

Its not even just about his midfield role. Im really addressing all the general 'how come he never plays like this for us' posts. They are not going into his actual role but rather bringing up the overall performance. The performance in that city game was very welcomed by Mourinho and nothing at the WC beat it. It was after that game when Mourinho made the comments about United deserving more respect.

“He played well against Swansea, he produced some very good work in training, and along with Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera he was phenomenal for 90 minutes against City,” the United manager said. “At half-time I said I wanted my defenders to be more confident and need to see more from Jesse Lingard and Alexis Sánchez, but I told my midfield players they didn’t need to improve. They were already playing well, and once we got the goals we knew we were mentally strong enough to see the game out. Sometimes when you are losing the instinct is to change things immediately, but I didn’t have that feeling so we stayed the same"

"Mourinho on Pogba, "I hope that he understands why he was very good. That's the point about his performance level and contribution to a winning team. It's important for him to understand why he was so good."

It's Jose 1 Pogba 0 cause he finally play according to what Jose wants from him. As midfield 2 , doing lot of defensive work , duel here , tackle there , cover here , win the ball back , and play it simple when it comes to attacking , if he could do it with France , he could do it with us no excuse. He is more a Patrick Vieira than Ronaldinho. And I see Pogba play like Carrick in the future when he has lost yard of pace , as deep lying playmaker with lot of responsibility to defend.

No, no, it was this bit:

From 2:55 onwards.

Hope he spends more time focusing on his football like he did during this World Cup than his hair during last season with us.
This guy has all the talent in the world - just need the discipline on the field.
If Mourinho builds the team around him, we will probably have another dynasty moving forward.

“Why he was very good”

I’ll tell you why - because he was playing in a functional midfield with Kante and Matuidi.

Hope Jose doesn’t expect Pogba to completely lose his flair. Pogba at his best is when he combines the flair with the simplicity he showed in the WC. You don’t go out and spend £90m on Pogba for him to play deep and safe like a older Carrick. Maybe that’s something he can become later in his career. I love the explosiveness in Pogba’s game.

Mou hardly wants that imo. He will know he can do both and that he badly needs his creativity. For all his faults, he would have signed a work-horse if he wanted steel only.

He dropped him for Mctominay who I would describe as steel only and not much in creativity. So it makes me wonder if he wants his 2 CMs to be solid and neat so his forwards can then be expressive. I hope not, but I just don’t see the direction he wants to go.

Ideal world would be Fred - Matic - Pogba Complimenting each other and bringing out the best in each other.

He dropped Pogba as he thought he can't do both and sulked apparently. Not because he wants him to play the role of McTominay surely?

Not because McTominay follows his instructions better? Same reason Fellaini was picked in CM over him at times too.

Instructions that involve doing both and choosing the right moment for going north you mean? Above all, he dropped him for off-field issues I think. To be fair Pogba looks as complete as ever now.

He does.
Mourinho did the same to Obi Mikel and he accepted to change his style but Pogba its's different.

He could change his style for a few games if it can allow him to win the World Cup, the European Championship or the Champions League.

But he will never agree to change his style forever. Especially if it's only to win a top 4 spot.

He is too ambitious for that.

The relationship between Pogba and Mourinho will end badly... I can't wait to know who the club will back. And the reaction of Raiola if the club side with Mourinho...

A come back to Juventus ?
He is already working on an emergency exit
It might be funny...and sad for the club to lose such a great player because of Mourinho.

The most interesting thing from the Mourinho presser was the "I hope he understands why he was so important". Mourinho want Pogba to play more mature and work better for the team and not so much himself.

Hopefully he will bring the same type of performances from the national team to us. For me, and i think Jose too, it's not about the goals and assists, it's about him orchestrating our play in the build-up, getting the ball forward, as we all know he can, while still contributing defensively. Goals and assists are just a bonus to that role.

Question is not if he is good enough, he is a great player, but is he good enough for what Mourinho and the team needs? Only Pogba can give the answer to that.

I never like when somebody says 'stopped reading at this or that' but did just that there. Surely being more disciplined doesn't have to mean being devoid of flair altogether ? It was bloody Mikel.

Play the man where the feck he wants to be fecking played. I rather die with Paul happy playing in his position or him being upset playing out of it. United are starting to look like superstar killer.

.
Deserve to be dropped, his performance was abysmal in Newcastle game and after.

If Pogba played with the same discipline like he played with france, Mourinho would be ecstatic. The french setup was quite similar to United's for the big games. Soak the pressure and hit them with speed. Rashford/Martial should be made to play the role Mbappe played for France since they are naturally fast. Lukaku could also do it but i would prefer him coming in little later because he's our best finisher.

Also probably the first time i saw Pogba without hair color in this WC.

Err that part is hard to understand, but Mendy is saying this, more or less.

Listen,
Since the ??? (Le Havre, seems to be)
It was around 17 dec 2007
We went to school at Theophil Gautier
we went to Montesquieu
He went to Manchester
I was still at the ??? but I signed pro
Later, he became pro at Manchester
He arrived at the Juventus
I went to Marseille
I went to Monaco
He was striking from his left kick at the Juventus
He was putting some Pogboom at the Juventus
He went to United
I was at Monaco a year
I went to Manchester (Not sure about that part)
It's the same family, United and City, but it's Manchester
And now, national squad, EDF, the second star, and Thank You

I’ll tell you why - because he was playing in a functional midfield with Kante and Matuidi.

He also wasn’t the only player who looked like creating a chance
At United he has to do it all himself. Last season no one stepped up imo

Except united front 3 were inept at creating chances

Wrong. Wrong. And wrong. Let's take this to the logical conclusion. If Pogba has an 'abysmal' game vs Austalia in France's first game of the WC, and your bench replacement is a French McTominay (b/c Deschamps has elevated some kid who lacks any kind of technical prowess but is over 6 feet and possesses some sideways passing simple genius), you play McTominay's clone against Peru? Never ever! Be gone Mourinhoism.

He was France best player against Australia, so find another example to prove that he didnt' get dropped after abysmal performance . It doesn't matter who they are, they deserve to be dropped when they played badly. Mourinho replace him with Mctominay to show that he have to be as discipline as him playing CM to get back to the team.If any his World Cup performance were resemble more to McTominay ( commited to challenge, fought for every ball on the or air , positioning himself to win the second ball etc ) than himself. We were doing okay with McTominay starting so i don't see the problem with him either . There is many thing more important than pulling Hollywood passes , stepover and flicks in football, you should just go back playing playstation bro.
He just prove that he can be discipline when he wants , like what Jose ask from him, now it's up to him to do it regularly with us.

You fail to comprehend...if your replacement options are the Scott McTominay's of the world, you don't make a move like that especially when it's clearly just to send some egomaniacal message at the expense of CL progression (defending the decisions made during that stretch of games is just absurdly comical) . Pogba can do nothing for 65 mins then hit a pass like he did to Mbappe. McTominay and his ilk do not have the capacity to author game changing moments.

Mourinhoism is dated. His man management is horrendous. What will go under-reported is that whatever his transfer targets are, there are many, especially those of the attacking variety, that have no wish to play for him. But yes, please proceed with your McTominay fanboyism. He's a great kid with limited ability but still a great kid.

First leg 0-0 when he came on replacing Herrera, Second leg 1-2 , was still 0-0 before he came in and drop 1/10 performance , the guy who assisted Sevilla first goal was supposed to be his man, but he let him run behind. You should go check Paul Pogba 2017/2018 performance and see what CAF said about his performance against Sevilla, was abysmal for several weeks around and deserve to be dropped.

What are you even explaining? He came on as a sub and didn't score? And what? Players make mistakes (That's generally why goals are conceded). Players make more mistakes in terribly designed systems, playing with non-complimentary players. I'm starting a 60% Pogba over McTominay all the time. You don't win anything with players like McTominay starting matches. I have football history. And you have Caf posts (consisting of clowns obsessing about his hair) as your evidence. Oui, monsieur.

Rio Ferdinand’s pass of the tournament.

that´s before his goal right? I was looking at it and screaming at my friend "What a fecking pass!" He didn´t quite catch that. But really what a fecking pass, only Pogba is capable of this, it¨s not just a perfectly weighted through ball but a first time pass from half volley, played without time of thinking, showed fantastic vision and reaction before even executing that beauty. No doubt pass of the tournament and that¨s why Pogba should play a bit deeper because he can see those passes..

While it is easier to imagine the Frenchman doing this at Manchester United in patches; when the occasion really demanded such a performance, it is rather detrimental to the club; to keep its best outfield player (arguably) from playing to his strengths in a longer and harder competition to win than the World Cup – which requires a different kind of approach to a 38-game Premier League where the level of competition is higher and more sustained.
It is important that Jose Mourinho – who in his recent press conference, mentioned that the need for Paul Pogba to “understand why he was good at the World Cup”, also understands that the circumstances – that were necessary for the 25-year old to show that side of his game at the World Cup, which he really is capable of playing – are not the same as playing week-in-week-out for Manchester United.
