I haven't written him off. I said he would improve and that fans would be underwhelmed at the start.

In footballing terms he is not worth 90 million. But Pogba as a brand in all as well as his footballing ability does surpass the 90 million paid

He's not, but United are a rich club and if he's a success then I doubt the money paid will particularly be that much of a concern.

This is why I want Carrick and Pogba with Herrera/Morgan as a trio

I can understand why possession wise we would be much more impressive, but on the defensive side? That's too lightweight for me. How about Blind at dm, with Smalling and Bailly?

That could be another option.

But we will never know until we try it, we don't have to play it in every game.

True. I'm all for criticising his poor performance and for even arguing that he hasn't made the impact he was expected to so far, but it's silly to call him overrated or not good enough after a small selection of games in a new side.

The bias regarding certain players unfortunately is very prevalent and works both ways. See the comical defences of Blind for his errors on Saturday, or the need to throw other players under the bus when someone is trying to back up a player they like, ie when Rooney performs poorly and people justify it by saying others were poor too.

Couldn't agree more with this. A lot of the stuff you mention are pet hates of mine on here. So let's say Lingard has a mare, you get told by people in the Lingard performance thread of all places, that others were crap too. This is despite the fact that said players are also being criticised in their respective threads. Common theme on here with some of the teachers pets.

Yeah, Pogba hasn't started great for us but he was magnificent for Juve and surely he will come good. It's sad that some revel in his relative 'failings' to-date, because eh they said they didn't want him in the first place! Surely, even if you didn't particularly want him, as a United fan you would be desperate for him to come good.

I don't really get this point. Pogba is being criticised as are loads of other players of ours. Rooney certainly isn't alone.

Are you saying that Rooney should be exempt from criticism because of sentimental reasons? You alluded to the fact that he isn't good enough anymore and that's surely the main issue? Yes, he's been a brilliant player for us but those days are well and truly over. Pogba has played about 4 games and is 24!

There's criticism and there's disrespect. Rooney gets disrespected by too many people on this forum.

I also didn't allude to the fact he wasn't good enough. I said he's not the same player. Big difference.

The (rather obvious) point is that his poor performances for his last few games for United were blamed on his position. Tonight his performance has been identical. Just like the second half against City, where he played the same position. Join the fecking dots.

Agree that not only the position is the problem, he needs time. But I share the conviction that he should play in a more advanced and free role. Hopefully, Mou will find his best role for the team.

No offence but that sounds like you're a-bit emotional if you feel he's 'disrespected'. I mean, so what, do you care what people say about him on an Internet forum?

You said he's done at the top level. Surely that's you saying he's not good enough

Massively disappointing since his debut. He needs to stop being so selfish.

I don't think that's fair. What was he supposed to do? Pass it sideways to the likes of Herrera and Schneirdelin for them to pass it sideways to the full backs or backwards to the keeper?

He was trying to make things happen. Kind of hard when you're surrounded by average players.

Was pretty poor again. But so was everyone else. Our midfield went missing other than Herrera.

He was shit. I'm sure he'll improve and show his class though.

Far too much dribbling and holding on to the ball too much. I think he might be trying too hard to prove something.

Should let it come more naturally.

So you're happy with what hes given us for 90 million?

Agree with you. At least get tries to affect the game. Fellani is definitely the best deep lying player we have too.

Nothing was working for him tonight, but compared to many others, he was working his tail off. You can critcism for the end product, but you can't fault his effort.

Not really. It's early days yet to be fair. But I appreciate his efforts to not play in a Van Gaal like way. Something I got frustrated at seeing from some of the others tonight.

We need to calm down.. he's still finding his feet. If he's still this dire midway through next year I will be worried.. but it is early days.

wants too much time on the ball for me, i have absolutely no idea what his best position is in this side

No offence taken. I just think a player like a player like Rooney should have a lot more respect. Just my opinion, though.

You also need to ready my quote again. I never said he was done at the top level.

This is why I'm so defensive of Rooney. He may not be the same player he once was, but he's done it at the highest level for quite a long time. Pogba and co. need to do a lot more before they reach the level Rooney did.

Shite invisible performance again. Probably needs to tweet about his hair more.

I think he needs a free role too. I think he's been given that at United. Whether in a two or a three. In his debut he made great use of that freedom. Not since then, though. Like you say, he needs time.

I do get where you are coming from but its not enough for me. I don't really care if players are trying something if their attempts are terrible. Gibson used to always try and get a goal with his 30 yard shots, didn't make me like him.

The problem is not him, this club is becoming a graveyard for world class players. There's something I cannot put my finger on that is becoming a huge burden on some obviously very talented individuals. That thing needs to be addressed by the manager.

Apologies I read that line without the word 'it' in there :nervous:

That's why your post made no sense to me, initially. Yeah fair enough, just seems some on here get too hell bent on defending players that put in poor performances week in week out.

His role in the team is pretty obvious. He almost always tries to drive the ball forward, rather than pass it quickly. He does this well enough, but the final ball is not there.

But for the final ball to be there, he needs more options than Zlatan and Rashford(who are rarely on the pitch at the same time). Our wingers need to step up. Martial is nothing like the player he was last season. He's still young, but at this rate I'd rather start Rashford on the left(I still think we need something different on the right. I haven't given up on Lingard yet).

What is with all these excuses? he was given license higher up the pitch tonight like everyone was screaming for, and he was absolutely invisible yet again. He needs the freedom of a Zidane to even get involved in a game now does he?

Meanwhile Gundogan returns from injury for City and looks sublime. Grim.
City look far more slick and well coached it's straightforward for Gundogan to slot in.

With us alarm bells are already ringing, just hope Mourinho knows what he's doing.

I'm not making any excuses, other than the bleeding obvious. Let's not write him off a month into his first season. Because that would be stupid.
