I generally agree with you. I'm content that our initial payment is 10m less than what they reportedly wanted, that's all.I have never understood endless debates on valuation of players during transfers. It is never easy to determine the fair value of a player as it depends on so much - talent, fit, temperament, buyer/seller financial position and contract position. And we fans have very little verified information on a lot of this. I can understand if it was 10m vs 40m, but beyond that it is just not helpful.
Not really. If we sign Wirtz for 30m this summer we can say with some confidence that it’s a good deal. With an unknown quantity like this kid, we need to see more of him and at a higher level to gauge his qualities.Same with every player in history, if they cost a world record amount or a free.
Some sourpusses want him to fail as us winning cuts off the Qataris. We need to keep losing to
justify sports-washing. Sad attitude, but there it is.
Feels like we pissed off someone at the visa office.Doubt it, these things tend to drag a bit for us - won't be that surprised if he's only actually signed on Sunday and paraded out at the game.
Some reports going around that his wages will be around £35k per/week increasing to around £50k at the end of his contract. In combination with an OK transfer fee, I'm very pleased with this deal/overall package. Hopefully it proves successfull, but if he flops it should be possible to fetch a decent resale-value from him.I'd argue that more importantly then the guaranteed transfer fee being £29m, £30m or £31m, is us not handing him a big fat contract straight away. If he doesn't succeed but he's on a fat contract, that will be the show-stopper for a decent resale in the future, not what we paid to purchase him. And just a £30k difference per/week in wages over 3 years absorbes a £4.5m extra in transfer fees.
I'm hoping that he will be somewhere in the £40-60k per/week region.
BargainSo, Mr McFred, how would you feel about €60m and €30m for a couple of CM’s that are not good enough to be the spine of our team? (Warning: Tongue in cheek)
Player that's 20 years old coming from Lecce in Serie A, you can imagine him struggling in PL initially. But even if he's raw I hope just by being more natural in that LWB role than Dalot (and being left-footed obviously) will improve our shape on that side immediately.
Pogba and Sancho were arguably the best young players in Europe when United bought them. I've stopped looking at fees in that way. You can get it wrong paying big money or paying a smaller fee.Not really. If we sign Wirtz for 30m this summer we can say with some confidence that it’s a good deal. With an unknown quantity like this kid, we need to see more of him and at a higher level to gauge his qualities.
That’s where Fergie got it right. Checked out their character/behaviour and injury history.Pogba and Sancho were arguably the best young players in Europe when United bought them. I've stopped looking at fees in that way. You can get it wrong paying big money or paying a smaller fee.
Udogie maybe but Kayode I disagree.Udogie and Kayode are the benchmarks at roughly 18m euros. So we are overpaying.
I dont personally think the difference is alot. But we need to be working on this deals in advance in future so the right fees are paid.
Presumably, one of the issue was related to the fact that we're not meant to be paying anything like £40m?Nothing. People seemed to have an issue when I said he wasn't worth 40m a few pages ago and it carried over. Apparently it's fine to be excited for signings you know little about but not be cautious about them. Go figure.
I never once insinuated it was in pounds. Romano had a tweet saying 40m euros and I said he's not worth 40m.Presumably, one of the issue was related to the fact that we're not meant to be paying anything like £40m?
The reported figures are meant be around £25m, potentially going up to around £30m with tough ad ons.
Of course the media are doing the trick, when it's United, of mostly quoting it in euros to maks it sound higher. But you're making it even higher in pounds!
It's fine to be both excited or cautious about new signings - whether you know them or not, as many a big name known signing has failed here in recent years. But it's wrong to try to sway the argument by exaggerating the fee paid to make it sound a worse deal.
I'd say it was pretty disingenuous to just put 40m - when discussing an English clubs purchase - in response to the tweet that you distinguish yourself as being worded as 40m euros.I never once insinuated it was in pounds. Romano had a tweet saying 40m euros and I said he's not worth 40m.
European targets often have their fees quoted in euros.
If you can point out one post where I thought the price was £40m I'd understand. If not let's move on.
Kayode has played 49 games for Fiore whilst Dorgu 57 for Lecce.Udogie maybe but Kayode I disagree.
Kayode hasn’t played as much this season so naturally his fee will be lowered.
Its not disingenuous at all. Club fees for European targets are quoted in euros. This is the norm. Moreover the discussion was following Romanos tweet where he made it clear it was in euros.I'd say it was pretty disingenuous to just put 40m - when discussing an English clubs purchase - in response to the tweet that you distinguish yourself as being worded as 40m euros.
When there's a big price difference between the pounds and euros figures, then quoting the high one without putting that it's euros - so much cheaper in pounds - was done, I suspect, to make the fee sound higher as you're against the signing / fee paid and so it adds to the point you're making more than saying 'he's not worth 25-30m.'
But you'll disagree with that, and I'm not bothered about taking part in a lengthy battle over a bit of sneaky wording in a post. I've pointed it out, you've disagreed with it. We'll move on as you say.
You probably should have done that too then. A simple '€' goes a long wayTransfers are quoted more often in euros than pounds.
Clearly! I genuinely didn't know if I say "he's not worth 40m" after Romano posts a "40m euro" price tag, it was bleeding obviousYou probably should have done that too then. A simple '€' goes a long way

Moyes: VarelaAnyone has the stats / success rate of every manager post SAF’s first signing?
Careful before you'll be accused of using € to make the number look bigger againNothing. People seemed to have an issue when I said he wasn't worth 40m a few pages ago and it carried over. Moyes: Varela
VdG: Herera
Mou: Bailly
Ole: Dan James
ETH: Malacia
I don't know all their stats, but I'd say only Herera was really a success
He's going to be straight in, right? By default he is our only left footed wing back (Malacia is out the door, and even when Shaw returns I have no doubt he will again only be used as a LCB).
It'll be some steep learning curve for the boy.
Thought I was on the Hojlund thread from last year! Not going to pretend I've seen anything other than recent clips but he's exactly the profile of player we should be targeting.
Good age, position we desperately need, athletic, hopefully ready to make the step up.
Hope he has a real impact.
