Patrick Dorgu | 2024/25 Performances

Agree that he was the best player in the first half but yes we need him on the left. Two inverted wing backs in this system is crazy to me.

I didn't think he was great but I'd give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't look comfortable playing on the right. The angles looked all wrong for him every time he received the ball. I hope next time he plays it's on the left and Amorim finds someone else to play RWB, be that Amad or Dalot.

The theory that he was easing him in, given he’s mainly played on he right this season, seems plausible.

Has he been signed for the left? Do we know that for a fact? Maybe Amorim wanted him for the right wing. He certainly played on the right a lot for Lecce.
Well if we signed him for right wing and amorim is happy with dalots performances at lwb there is no hope

Yes it's plausible to disadvantage the whole team because he has played slightly more games on the right this season. Didn't he play further forward on the right anyway?

Thought he was okay, not sure why they played him and Dalot opposite sides. Surely he can see Dalot is struggling on the left as well, crazy decision.

That's an exaggeration.

Had we not signed / played Dorgu, we'd have more than likely started the game with the same set up as we did the 2nd half anyway - which was still inverted WB's and so a left footer at RWB. So it hardly 'disadvantaged the whole team' to have Dorgu there in the first half instead of Amad. Both of them are going to be valid options for that RWB role whenever Amorim wants an inverted choice there.

I'm also hoping to see him being tried at LWB as well. And I'm sure he will be because, like so many of our options, he's going to be switching between a few different positions at various points.

I just have no idea why anyone would think we need to pay Dalot at home to fecking Leicester.

He did ok. The bigger problem for me is Dalot on the left, he shouldn’t be in the team.

Yeah that's really annoying. I was of the opinion that there was not much point complaining about it when Malacia was in poor form and Luke Shaw is still injured, so it was a case of needs must, but I hope we don't see him on that wing for too much longer.

He was probably our best player in that first half so he was hardly disadvantaging us.

Is it just us who seem to buy players for a gaping hole in the squad only to insist on playing them in a different position? Sanchez immediately springs to mind.

I'm sure Amorim knows better than me, but man I was really looking forward to having a LWB who isn't Dalot.

Mata also, shoehorned to RW his whole United career

Couldn't put it better myself. Inverted wingbacks, no width. Just madness.

Inverted wing backs in a 3421 is fecking stupid however you try to spin it. Someone tell Ruben he's not in Portugal anymore.

Isn't Quenda predominantly left footed as well, but Amorim played him at RWB?

Yup it’s his preference clearly. It makes no sense.

I can understand inverted wingers when you have a natural FB to overlap so there is an option inside and outside.

But having only one wide player wanting to cut in makes no sense. It’s So easy to defend against.

And even if you are able to get them in the clear in wide areas they are on their wrong foot, and more likely to squander the chance to create… perfectly exemplified by the one opportunity dorgu had to get a square ball into the box in the first half.

Properly baffling stuff.

Yep. I was at the game tonight and was thinking Amorim is majorly over complicated it. The bloke who was stood behind me had a much stronger view of what he thought of him!

As for Dorgu, I thought he did ok generally- a 6/10.

For Sporting Quenda, a left footer plays right wingback and Trincao a left footer plays the right #10 role

Its game 1, the first time he's played with Amad. There were signs of a good combination before coming off

Amorim likes inverted WB's (at Sporting as well), whenever left-footed Amad has started WB it's been on the right, and Dorgu often played from the right, cutting in onto his left foot, at Lecce.

Yes Quenda plays inverted from the right, but I think Amorim played a left-footer on the left generally (might have been down to options obviously). Having both wingbacks invert seems like a bad idea when we have no one else providing width. One is fine if they're comfortable going down the line as well.

Like everyone else, I'd like to see Dorgu and Amad as wingbacks.

We were God awful so it doesnt mean anything. The balance of the team is what matters and it was obvious to inverted wing backs would be harmful to the team

Thought he was our best player in the first half playing completely out of position.

So yeah take him off at half time and hang him out to dry. Bizarre management.

Interesting how comfortable he is on his weaker foot, even taking a shot. I do think he is just what the doctor ordered, pace, increased physicality, enthusiasm and energy. He obviously is a bit raw but should improve over time.

But we still had two inverted WB's in the second half and played better - the difference was Garnacho did a lot more in the #10 role than Mainoo or Amad did in the first.

You don't seem to count left footed Amad playing at RWB as much of an inverted issue as left footed Dorgu playing there, which I'm not sure why. The big issue with WB's for me now is our right footers - Dalot and Mazraoui - not being great at the role whichever side they play. I'm happy with Dorgu and Amad on either side, as they provide an attacking threat on the ball.

I'd be happy with Dorgu on the left and Amad on the right - not because of which foot they use, but because they look to be the two who can provide much more attacking threat - both individually, and linking up with others.

Played him on the right, he plays OK (certainly by our current standards), but then takes him off at HT? Didn't even try switching him to LWB for 10/15... Just weird. Shouldn't be a fitness issue.
