Its got to the point where he has become severely underrated by our fans. He isn't the same as a few years ago, but he's a good left back for a Champions League team. We've been spoiled by him and we're really going to miss him when he's gone; his ability and his leadership. We had Silvestre as our left back for a long period of time, remember that.

I don't think he was ever underrated, more that a lot are looking to the future and understand that it's an area that needs investment. While Silvestre was no world beater, I thought he was a great servant to the club.

He has been awful this season. Goals paper over some very bad performances. When I'd rather have Enrique at left back, something isn't going well.

He has had awful moments but in general he has been fine. It's not like Young who has been constantly poor.

Absolute bollocks.

He really isn't, he's hit the age now where he's quickly deteriorating and that's no criticism of Evra. He's good enough to do a job for the rest of the season but he will cost us points. We should if possible be bringing in his replacement in Jan to rotate and make sure Evra gets the rest he needs.

Underrated was probably a bad choice of words. Taken for granted would be a better phrase. And Silvestre was the worst first choice left back we've had since the 1980s in my opinion

Please let it be Shaw... *crosses everything*

Well we have had two of our best ever LB's in that time, so being the worst out of that bunch isn't that bad, it's quite normal.

I remember when some people were saying he was better than Baines.

I wouldn't say he has been awful but considering the heights he was once at, he has been poor since the start of last season.

I think Evra does get harsh treatment and by all accounts whilst he does make some mistakes on the pitch he is a real leader off the pitch, some people want to get rid in the summer I think that would be a mistake. You need personalities. Also in fairness to him when does he ever get a decent rest. He plays in one of the most demanding roles on the pitch and is usually playing every game. Must be hard to always maintain your physical edge which naturally leads to mistakes.

Yeh exactly. It's not like we've had a plethora of regular left backs during that time.

I think it's a bit embarrassing for a player at one of the biggest clubs in the world to not realise how much space he leaves open behind him and his lack of effort to track back sometimes. Surely SAF/Moyes will have spoke to him about this!?

I doubt a player works harder than Patrice Evra. He can be accused of a lot of things but lacking effort isn't one of them.

Yes, he can sometimes be seen jogging back but it's often following an absolute lumg bursting run down the other end. Getting forward so often is obviously an instruction so the midfield, winger and CBs should compensate for that.

'Lack of effort sometimes' inferring the jogging back he's guilty of. Aye, i agree that they should but when they haven't he could make more of an effort to get back.

I don't think it's about effort. He just hasn't got it in him to get back any quicker. As I said, I doubt anyone puts more miles in than Evra and most of the time it's a full tilt.

Also in fairness to Evra more often than not the cover from midfield isn't adequate, when a fullback is asked to push up as high and as often as he is you need your midfielders to take up positions to be able to cover that space in the event of a counter and too often ours don't. I mean Evra does sometimes seem oblivious to danger but there should also be some acknowledgement that the midfield generally don't provide the right support for the amount he's asked to push up.

I think if he really wanted to he could do more than a jog, but we will have to agree to disagree.

 Me.

EDIT: It was due to the fact that i knew it would end up circling for a couple of pages.

Exaggeration, no? He's had a couple of bad games - that's about it. His poorest games this season: Tottenham, Newcastle, and Aston Villa. All of these games have come recently. He's really not as bad as some make him out to be... One mistake and it's the same posts, but if you look at his form at the start of this season, I would say that its better than at the start of last season because he's executing the same roles well but with more intensity. Seriously, when he plays with Kagawa/Januzaj, he has to defend and attack heavily. He's still been one of our best players this season. The problem is, we do a pretty poor job of rotating left backs.

Hes such a good personality to have around the dressing room also, seems to take it upon himself to help the foreign lads settle in too, its good to have somebody like that in your dressing room

 Nothing to do with Evra hving the gall to take issue with being racially abused by Suarez of course? Rivalry is fine, but Liverpool fans hating Evra is pathetic and shameful.

What are you talking about? I have no problems admitting Evra has been great in the past, but currently he's a defensive liability.

Ah come on. He's not as good as he once was, but to say he's "awful" and (even crazier) worse than Enrique is so over the top. Not even my Liverpool mates who detest Evra would claim that with a straight face. It's obvious something else than his performances are influencing your evaluation.

I shudder to think what would happen if he got injured. By default he needs to start every match because Buttner is absolutely not up to standard.

Quite game, and obviously tired from the amount of games he has played recently. Though we can't really afford to rest him either. The drop in class is just to much if Buttner is his understudy.

The team dynamic changes when Rafael plays. We use him more than Evra, so it gives Evra a "rest" on the field. And we have Januzaj making dem runs. But for me, Evra should have been rested today or vs. Stoke. Like I said, his performances have generally been fine, but it's no coincidence that he's struggled in the last month.

Yeah he did look like he needed a rest, I think in general Moyes seems reluctant to rest some of the senior/key players or sub them off until he's absolutely certain we're ok. I mean Valencia has played all 3 games this week as well, am sure Adnan could have lasted the 90 in place of him, and Rooney didn't seem 100% either. Hopefully will work out ok, I suppose if by all accounts we do go for Baines again in Jan then that will sort the left back issue with Evra out, he'll just need to power through xmas.

In fairness we had a lot of control of this game and Stoke didn't exactly feel a high energy game so hopefully he's not had to expend as much energy as he would usually do, likewise Rooney.

I think he's being told to play more conservatively. It's been like this for the last few games now and we haven't conceded a goal while he's on the pitch.

I think the same too and it's no wonder he's been better defensively or hasn't looked as "lazy" (I hate that term) as a lot of people usually think he is.

Can anyone dig up that picture of him mimicking Benitez for the Carrick winner against Wigan in 2009? Can't find it anywhere.

Cheers guys, was just going through some Paddy E's finest moments in light of the news that he put us on to Januzaj which I find hard to believe but hey why not?

What a pic. Rooney hitting Carrick with the hurricanrana there, Patrice taking the piss out of Benitez.
