What about Coentrao, he barely gets a game at Madrid, he's 25 and would cost less than Baines?

we tried to get him on loan but i think he just signed a new contract with madrid

We need to bench Evra now to show that everybody is treated the same. Give Fabio the game-time for a couple of games now as Evra needs rest as well.

If that ever happens, we'll have to be content with Buttner playing LB.

Why so? Fabio has had a wonderful loan-spell in QPR and did very well when he got the chance here too. He doesn't offer the width and simplicity that Evra/Buttner does but he is much better with the ball at his feet and at defending.

I dont think Moyes agrees with you. Fabio is on his way out and kills me inside that he never got a runout other than one game

We're all as perplexed as you are. Ask the gaffe as Fabio is hardly getting a look in at the moment.

Also, I don't think his loan spell was quite "wonderful". Was ok, but could have gone better IMO.

never kicked on when he got here though. Good point about the crossing but i would say Baines is a better crosser than Evra so maybe we would get a few more chances there

Definetely a better crosser than Evra, so he might; Evra is assisting more than Baines these days though, and I think we'll miss Evra's link-up play, dribbling and urge to get forward.

Wonderful ?

A player known for his offensive qualities and lacking defensive ones went to a bottom side that had to defend pretty much nonstop all games and he did good there. I think that is a wonderful loan spell for that situation and from watching his QPR games he improved massively from his first matches there until the latter ones.

Fabio is in my opinion better than Rafael defensively, technically and possession wise, whereas Rafael has a better engine/drive and ability to provide width. I think Moyes prefers this width/engine which is why he uses Buttner who has a good engine/bad defense/good crosses.

I think under the circumstances that he went there to improve his defense, which he clearly did over the course of his loan-spell it was great.

Did he play great? No far from it. But his best skills is offensive ones and he had no chance of using them a lot. In United he would be able to use his best assets, the offense, as well as the newly learnt defensive soundness.

I'd say the loan was wonderful if only it translated into him getting playing time at Utd. It's like what he did at QPR doesn't matter at all now. Rafael has exceed Fabio in all aspects of the game now and logically with all the time he's been having.
Fabio is unfortunately becoming one of those players who get better when people don't see them playing for a while.

Sorry bud, my memory might be playing tricks on me but was Fabio even the regular LB there, aside from a few games?

He got 23 games which is pretty good for a young back-up player in a premier league environment that is meant to help his weak sides rather than his good ones. I am sure if he played for a middle side team who used more offensive wing-backs he would be starting regularly.

He has had one less game for QPR than he has in his entire United career. So expecting him to go from starting 6 games a year to 23 must be considered a wonderful loan-spell?

23 games is much more than I expected tbh. Wiki has it down as 15 with 8 sub appearances. Still not that bad. For some reason I thought he started less than 10 matches. The feedback from his loan spell was "meh" IIRC. He did well, but not wonderfully well.

The matches I watched of his, he was often pushed up to LM as well. But there were certainly certain matches I read here on the Caf in which he did perform very well. It's just as you metioned, the team he was playing in was in total disarray.

I mean, he wasn't a world-class player all of a sudden or anything like it. But for a player who had played 24 games in 4 years for his team and went to a EPL side we couldn't expect any better. For me if Macheda went to EPL side and got 23 matches and did well in the majority of them - then that would be a wonderful loan spell.

The main factor was of course QPR playing extremely defensive that year and being pushed back all games. Fabio has been considered weak defensively so it was clearly the team least suited for his play in the entire premier league. So to get 23 matches in that situation and also improving massively defensively in the time is a great loan-spell for me. Without that spell he would have been a nobody, with that spell - people can see him get a chance to start for us. I bet for Fabio himself that was all he could ever ask for.

It's weird though. Buttner's been preferred over him at LB all season.

I'd love for Fabio to be given a run out.

I think it is Moyes preference for wing-backs who provide mainly width and crosses. He is not interested at all so far in a wing-back who will be part of the possession-play like Rafael/Fabio do. Rafa/Fabio are very similar in style to Alaba/Lahm and Moyes want the Baines type of wing-back.

You could be correct, though the crosses into the box hasn't done anything except stifle our play and suit our opponent CB's to the tee tbh .

Well here's hoping Fabio gets a run, if Evra doesn't start. Shakthar aren't the most physical of sides IIRC, so Rafael/Fabio on the fullbacks could be a option, though atm I doubt one Moyes would try and explore.

Yeah don't get me wrong I hate the way we currently play. I think Fabio/Rafael would help us tremendously in possession if we let them. They have the engines, passing, dribbling and technical ability to help us where we have problems. I think we would improve our defense as they wouldn't need to push up to the goal-lines to be able to help out massively in the offense.

He must be a completely shit trainer not to outdo Buttner though

To be fair I am scared every time both Evra and Buttner gets near the ball. You just know SOMETHING is going to happen, it can be a random amazing cross to a goal for us or it can be that they quit defending for a second and we concede.

The entertainment value of them are through the roof though for good and bad.

Was awfull against player who just had his first start this season for Villa, and I think Albrighton isn't one of the paciest wingers either, I think he is more like Cleverley type of winger(back in a day). Really poor defensively, and it's become really serious problem for us now, most of the time it's like he isn't defending at all.

Awful tbh. I am beginning to wonder if Buttner would even be a downgrade with him in this form

He was poor today. He plays far to much and has done for years.

He is still my first choice left back but he should get a break

He is a liability. It's nothing new. For all his preaching and spouting off, time and again he looks like the one who gives the least amount of a shit how we do. He did almost everything wrong today. Moyes doesn't fancy him anyway and I am not sure if he'll be here on February 1st never mind next season.

Pretty much the only negative of today. Was dreadful... spending £15-20 million on Baines doesn't seem so bad at this point in time...

Desperately need a left back in January. Villa were too poor to capitalise today, but he's going to cost us games. Whoever our target is, we should spend a little extra, pay the January premium and get him in.

I tend to defend him, but that wasn't a good performance. I still think spending money on Baines is a huge waste, but Evra needs to step up. Two awful ball losses in the first half, then struggles to contribute in attack (Januzaj didn't help him there as he does dally a bit on the ball which leaves Evra either in offside or in poor positions). Awful crossing.

Yes! I love him but he was woeful and he had his 'Gary Neville' performance today when you'd hope he takes a long hard look at himself and realises that he either improves or retires/steps down a level! What a shame!

He needs to watch the game again and realize that he is now a liability. He can no longer be confused why Moyes is looking for a replacement.

He's been overplayed for about 6 years in a row. It's hardly his fault that he is looking jaded. Will be interesting to see what Moyes does about the position.
