I thought he did well today, he didn't make any significant mistakes in defence, and was very good in attack.

Rossa, are you Evra's father, relative, or something like that?

In fairness, you were bashing him some. Imo, when a player plays well you should rather focus on that than one or two glitches. As I said, all modern fullbacks have these - to say their first priority is to defend is naive as they are equally an attacking threat. Nani would sure as hell get some stick if he didn't defend - the fullback and the winger complement each other in attack and in defense.

I agree with the posters above that he seems to be back to his best. His pace is at 85-90% of what it used to be, which enables him to run past players again; last season he struggled with minor injuries that he played with that surely hampered his fitness.

I think him drifting inwards is hyped up more than it needs to be; he surely does this for a reason, otherwise he would be instructed to do differently.

Not really I didn't say he had a poor game, just some sloppy moments which he did. Whether he's back to his or not is a different matter. In general I think he has picked up this season which is great and I think he might be even better if he was given some more rests.

As for his priorities yes he should attack but he's still first and foremost a defender. But again that's not something I'm picking him up on, all I said was that he had a few sloppy moments, not to do with not tracking back or being too high up the pitch but from taking a poor position when he was already back, probably the biggest defensive weakness in his game.

You did say he should take a back seat, so yeah, you did imply he should more or less stop going forward.

He's had a very good season so far, but people should stop moaning about one or two mistakes defensively. I've said it before, all modern fullbacks are caught out several times during a match; it's natural as they are attacking fullbacks and you can't expect them to bust their lungs getting back every time. They need defensive cover, especially Evra who plays every bloody match.

Good points. There was a noticeable change in his displays after Buttner's performance against Wigan. I actually think it scared him for a second.

He is an attacking fullback but he also is a member of our backline. He attacks and defends and defending should be his main priority. It's not like our attackers need that much help. He is there to provide an alternative outlet if necessary. Otherwise, he better make sure he's tracking back and getting into position. He's been quite solid on 1 v 1 situations which is where a lot of complaints arose from.

In the 08/09 season, he was having a torrid time with wingers like Lennon and some fans felt he had gone off the boil. The same happened last season. Mackie had the beating of him when we went to Loftus Road. It was bizarre. Glad he's sorted it out. I miss the days of his crazy flicks and tricks. On his day, he can be a phenomenal player to watch.

Nice header.

And one of the most diabolical pieces of defending in (my) recent memory.

Averages out to a meh, I suppose.

Did well to score and he generally looked good enough in attack, but his defensive game was poor and very careless. A bit like watching him last season in defence actually.

Brainless. All those spastics in the de Gea thread, get in here.

Piss poor defending for the goal. He was marking a man that Ashley Young had passed on, but as soon as Carrick has to leave his man and goal to the ball, and that fella makes a run through, Evra should be alert to the danger and go with him and forget about the bloke he was keeping an eye on. He wasn't keeping an eye on the overall picture and got punished for it.

He was pretty excellent going forward though... great link up play with Young/Giggs and should have probably got an assist in for Rooney's chance in the first half. As for his goal, what a fecking header that was... top stuff.

Ashame really, because he's been largely defending excellently for a while now... certainly hasn't dropped a major bollock like he did today anyway. Hopefully he can go on another solid run of games now and cut that sort of stuff out (again!).

Good to see him get the goal and played fairly well going forward as usual. Rather average defensively though and likely could have done something better in regards to the goal conceded.

Carrick was with De Guzman. Then he slowed down to block Agustien.Young was marking Tiendalli, and he only made a run towards Evra, but gets back to right back. As Agustien was passing the ball to Routledge, Evra was standing there watching De Guzman walking freely to our box.

It was shambolic. :o

It's not the first time Evra getting caught like this. Time and time again teams used to draw him inside the box using a winger/forward thus creating a free space down our left side. Our long standing nature of letting an attacker come towards our box and then trying to close him down has been pretty annoying too.

Symptom of our good ol' 2 man midfield that I think, especially when you have one so forward as Cleverly. There's just not the man power to reliably close people down further up the pitch without dragging the team out of shape. It did used to work to be fair but out defence used to be orders of magnitude more solid that it is now.

ITK. Fergie at half time to Evra: "Good goal. But what the feck were you doing letting that Guzman easy passage? Taking it easy because you scored? Get the feck up and defend, or I'll cut your balls off you."

... isn't that exactly what I said, but with Swansea players names?! ;)

I personally thought Evra was poor defensively yesterday, making the type of decisions that have you banging your head against a wall, especially when he is one of our most experienced players.

Not sure why he tries to do smart things in dangerous areas either, especially when the game is so finely balanced. His only saving grace is he is playing well going forward and his link up play is rather good.

We owe the guy some loyalty I think but he is a ticking time bomb that will detonate in a big game. A winger with intelligence and movement will surely take advantage of him.

Still better than Buttner though.

The way he let De Guzman go had me fuming. Then he just lifts up his arms as if he's not at fault. Great attacking-wise but needs to sort out his defending first and foremost. It was abysmal defending.

He was poor defensively yesterday, but he's been very good this season for the most part, so cut him some slack. It's not as if everyone else was having a blinder and he just didn't bother.

We might as well put Paddy on the wing, and Val in defence.

fecked up defensively on more than one occasion but was great going forward.

He gets sucked into the middle so often when defending. It doesn't make any sense.

Great goal but wow, some of his positioning is just appalling.

Really? I thought he was tracking his runner, as he should do. I believe Giggs shouldn't have drifted inside and stayed in to cover for the attacking full back, as is the winger's job.

He's been one of the plus points of our season. He's looking more complete than we've seen him before. Overall his defending is improved this season and he carries a goal threat now.

I'm gonna be expecting him to score when he goes forward now.

Yep. It was clearly Giggs' man. But Giggs was forced to drift inside because Scholes/Carrick lost his man in the middle. Giggs was running all over the place defensively and that didn't help Evra.

The back four looked bad, but we defended poorly as a team.

Seriously... Evra is nothing from a worldclass player... he's been a shame for his national team... he's done a lot of mistakes... but this season will be HIS season... he'll be lifting three major trophies... ;)

He's become even better going forward but he's still very dodgy at the back.
