Captain's goal, but feck me, he's involved in a goal against us every fecking time he's playing.

Love him though. The drive he showed when we searched for the winner was great. Alongside Giggs, RvP and Evans in the "wanting it the most"-stakes.

His end product was never better tbf.

Yeah, nicely put.

Was stuck on conference call watching the game and for some reason it it didn't record, so can't go back and see the 2nd NC goal but, how was it his fault? From my view it look like he had gone in to cover and ball got played out wide - which means probably wide players responsibility.

Last game Evra got it in the neck for not covering the space for the through ball that lead to Swansea's goal. Seemed like a similar situation where he tried to close of space - had they scored from him not covering the space then he would have got blamed for that, so seems like a no win situation - Patty needs to be able to cover multiple spots at once or else he sucks.

I'll have to watch their second again later, but from what I recall from where I was sat, Evra was covering inside and got no protection from Giggs.

This of course should all be irrelevant anyway, as the goal should never have stood anyway.

He was a monster going forward in that second half... showed some incredible drive and passion to win.

Scoring headers, scoring from outside the 18 yard box... Who is this guy?

Defensively he's more than suspect, but Fergie will live with it because he adds so much to our attack.

That's what I thought and watching it again on 101greatgoals, that's what I see - he went in to take away the space from Cisse getting a through ball and then soon as it was pinged out, made his way out but, no way was he going to be able to close that gap.

If Cisse had been played through and they had scored, he'd have got the blame for it.

What an unexpected strike for the equaliser for 2-2! Great strike!

2 goals in 2 games now, amazing scenes! And is it 4 this season now?

I think he has a complex after not putting that header away at home to Everton at 4-2 up last season. He's making up for it big style.

Yeah, just seen it again now, anyone blaming Evra for their second is being ridiculously harsh (and wrong). Evra is in an okay position along with our back four, but Giggs charging in-field to to try tackle Anita(?) along with Carrick, has left Simpson (who Giggs should have had) wide open to recieve the ball and loads of space for him to run into...

Very good goal from Evra, really came out of no where for me as well. Other than the goal he had a bit of an average game. Not great defensively, but really he was defending on his own as Giggs offers next to no real support in that manner these days so would be harsh to blame that on him totally. Was ok going forward.

But shouldn't one of the CBs picked up Cisse?

I thought he should've closed down earlier. It's not the first time he has always tended to stay central and not close his man down on the wing/out wide.

He's been one of the plus points of our season. He's looking more complete than we've seen him before. Overall his defending is improved this season and he carries a goal threat now.

I'm gonna be expecting him to score when he goes forward now.

Not true at all. He's playing the same, he's just added goals. Goals cover a multitude of sins.

That said, the bashing he's had this last 2 years has been way over the top anyway. He's still class.

Although it wasn't a perfect defensive performance from Evra, his desire to win yesterday made up for it IMO. He's a big part of what this United team is all about and contributes a huge amount to our attacking play.

Paddy takes a lot of stick on here, at times not justified. I have watched SAF teams longer than probably most on here as also an Aberdeen fan and SAF has always, when the back 4 is in position, tucked his FB's in tight to kill any through ball in behing the CB's, leaving the wide positions to be covered by the backtracking wide midfielder, or as a last resort, the FB himself charging out to try an block any delivery. It is only reasonable to assume that the FB will not always get to the man out wide if the midfielder has not get there either.

I think we have to just get behing Paddy and shout, "SSSHHHOOOOOTTTTT!!"

I find it interesting that a lot of SAF's teams in the past have the full back tucking in. Primarily because we seem to concede goals as a result of a free, unmarked man swinging a cross in when it seems like Evra should be rushing out to prevent the cross. I mean we probably have enough bodies in the box with both CBs, the RB and one of the CMs in there.

I love Evra's willingness to attack and he seems to have discovered his old form this season. But the goal conceded vs Reading and 2nd goal from Newcastle brought back bad memories.

Yes. It is interesting to be honest. I am thinking SAF will be regarding a ball played between the FB and CB in behind is an instant threat to goal and therefore the biggest threat, whereas a ball out wide gives the team one more attempt to cut out the threat, or at least that is my thought on it. But could be miles off as who am I to match thought processes with the greatest manger ever.

I do know we loose a lot of goals from crosses though.

I'm not sure, should they? Cisse was playing left wing afterall, and had drifted inside. Simpson was stood on the half way line as the play was building, and only made a late burst into the picture and was promptly given the ball. In that sort of situation, you'd hope that your left back is in line with your back 4, and your left winger is in the space in front of him. Giggs had no real reason to come inside to win the ball, and ultimately that's what cost us.

He could possibly have closed down a little bit quicker, but I wouldn't have expected him to be any further up the pitch then he was... Simpson afterall, was definitely not his man.

Yeah, at the cost of being shit at defending now.

We can't have it can we  ?
After the match he said a performance like that from the players (trailing twice at home) would surely get all fired by SAF next time.He really meant it like the entire team was given more than the usual hairdryer at HT

That is my issue. We lose too many goals from crosses. And I'm not sure about this but it seems like whoever is playing RB always manages to close down the player crossing the ball faster than say Evra would. Rafael/Brown/Jones don't really dally around in the centre - they usually try and close down their man.

Also I don't remember Evra staying too central back in 06-09 - it seems more of a recent-ish feature of his game - the lack of tracking back + staying central and not closing his man down has been evident for atleast two seasons you have to say.

I can't remember exactly but from my memory we definitely outnumbered them in our penalty box - we had enough players to mark their strikers.

And just because he is not 'his man' doesn't mean he should close down an immediate threat? I mean it wasn't like he was 25-30 yards away from goal - h he ended up taking that shot/cross from practically the edge of the penalty area and Evra was very half arsed about closing him down.

When he's good, he's very very good. When he's bad, he's freakin' awful.

I can not understand the praise tbh. I am not denying his drive and passion..they are there for all to see(especially with the gesture to the fans after his superb strike), however, he is continuously left wanting in defense.

Had Evra to not score yesterday, he would have been lambasted from here to kingdom come. I am all for giving the man the opportunity at left wing but the prospect of Mr Baines in a red shirt is tantalizing at this stage. He needs competition prontish

I too love Paddy, especially goal machine Evra , but I feel that his goals are papering over a ton of cracks. He's for one reason or another, become one of the laziest and disinterested defenders I've ever seen. Seriously, when he's not jogging back, he looks like his not arsed when putting in an attempted tackle.

Credit though, he's improved his end product and his link up play is still second to none on attack, where full backs are concerned. The hunger and desire he showed yesterday to get us back on track was captain worthy though!

Big liability as a defender now, can't believe he is our captain either.

What's hard to believe? He was every bit our captain yesterday, driving us on at every opportunity. He's clearly someone all our other players like and respect, and he never misses a game... thus he's a perfect choice for a vice-captain

For what? He was about as bad defensively yesterday as our whole team was. Even if he hadn't scored, people would surely have praised his drive going forward and the desire he showed... because you know, I'd like to think our fans would take the opportunity to praise our players more then criticise them.

If you can't understand some of the praise he's getting for yesterday, then I think that says more about you then the people who choose to praise him.

Evra could easily play left sided midfield, couldn't he? Would also address the shocking form of our "wingers".

I know it does kinda sidestep the issue of who would play left-back, but Evra's defending has been pretty poor while his attacking play has been excellent.

I think there's a massive difference playing LB and LW. Evra's great at linking up and exploiting the space/overlapping. But would he be able beat a fullback 1 v 1?

No surprise, he started his career in a serie c club or so in Italy as a striker before they converted him into a left back.so he always knew whe the back of the goal wS.

Brilliant again today. A goal and an assist! Defended very well too except for that one wayward pass! Returning to world class standards this season?

Right, so who decided at the start of the season to start sending Paddy up for corners and free kicks? Bloody brilliant!

I'm gonna stick my neck out and say it was Micky Phelen. Pure tactical genius!

Couple of times when he was up the pitch and they countered down his side he just jogged back nonchalantly which annoyed the hell out of me. But you can't argue with his attacking, who knew he was such an aerial threat?

On a brilliant run of goals/assists. Can't believe that he wasn't given the goal today, even though it did glance off Vidic.

Panicked towards the end but was very good today.

He was great today. The small moments when he gets caught being too relaxed in possession are dangerous though.

He's a better dribbler than most wingers he comes up against.
