Patrice Evra | 2008-12 Performances

His fall from grace has been horribly severe.

The fact that he's still first choice says more about our lack of quality alternatives.

He's woeful at times. The ease with which players ghost past him is embarrassing.

This grates me the most. I still cant get images of Mackie running past Evra with ease out of my head. Granted, he improved in the second half but I expect much better than that.

It's been happening for years. Assou Ekotto and Enrique are both at a better level than Evra in the PL. Cole is also on the wane.

For years? As in ever since 2009? He needs some competition desperately because I'm getting further annoyed by his comments and then how his performances follow up after that.

Well we're on the cusp of 2012 now, so it's a fairly prolonged dip.

I find his vocality and readiness to provide a soundbite quite galling given his poor form. He's always first to say we need to buck our ideas up when things go awry, yet he doesn't seem to take heed of his own advice.

I'm a bit bemused by him being captain tbh.

I know that Fryers and Fabio are both young, but if Evra doesn't find his form again, then why not give one of them a chance? Fabio is getting older, so if we have him in future first team plans, we have to start giving him chances sooner rather than later.

Still, I think Evra should improve. He's shown signs of doing so in certain games this season, so I'm confident that he will improve.

He's a better player than Evra these days.

That's a bit much. Ekotto was dreadful against Chelsea. Dreadful. The fact he was so out of position for Chelsea's goal just shows that your comment is a bit much. I know we've gotten on Evra for being out of position as well but if he was ever that bad, he wouldn't be starting let alone given the armband

It's no coincidence that this thread gets bumped with negative comments more and more frequently.

Paddy's been on the slide for a long time - he started to struggle during 08-09. It's a shame really because he was a worldie between 06-08.

It's actually sad. I hope Fabio can get a run of games. I'm getting sick of what he's putting out there. He had his swagger for a flash this season and ever since then, he's not been good enough.

We'd probably have already seen this beginning to take place if Fabio was able to play longer than 70 minutes at a time with out getting injured.

No he didn't. It was the back end of 09/10 when he started struggling, sometime around March or April. If I remember correctly 08/09 was actually his best season.

I always remember that, as Rooney, Evra and Fletcher had been (along with Vidic) our best players all season in 09/10, and suddenly all three of them started going out of form around March/April. Rooney got injured of course, and with what we know now I'd say that's probably when Fletcher started struggling with his illness, and at the time I just thought it was tiredness from Evra. But he's never been the same since. Coming up on two years now.

What are you on about?

Some of Evra's performances this season have been as good as any of his United career. feck me, you'd swear you were talking about Gary Neville in his final season.

Evra remains a top class full-back.

He didn't even play poorly yesterday ffs.

That's either over-rating how good he has been this season, or forgetting just how damn good he was a few years ago.

This season has been better than last, but he's certainly not gotten close to the player who used to completely dominate the entire left side of the field game-in game-out.

He started well against Blackburn, but as the game wore on he got worse and worse (the same can be said for Nani and Welbeck, actually).

Assou Ekotto better than Evra?

Jesus wept. You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.

I'm not claiming he's been dominant, week in, week out. Nobody in the team has. It's been a scrappy, patchy season in terms of individual form. My point is that it's absurd to paint the last few years as some sort of gradual decline when he's put in some top quality performances this season.

regarding his form over the last few years. It's been no where near as bad or as average as some of you like to make out. He's still been the best in the league IMO.

It doesn't help though that he has literally zero competition for his spot. This has 2 problems. Firstly that he's not pushed for his place and secondly he rarely gets a rest.

Hopefully Fabio can get fit and then keep himself fit.

Has been patch for a while but certainly isnt past it because he has still put in good performances. Was okayish yesterday but still some lapses in concentration while controlling the ball or making 6 yard passes which actually was an indicator of how easy we'd taken the game.

He could do with some competition. thats for sure..

Evra has been poor defensively for quite a while. Offensively he's had good games, but not been the proxy left winger he once was for us constantly bombing down the left. One of those games was yesterday.

Unfortunately there arent a lot of left backs, at least that I know of, and certainly in the premier league, that are a clear ways better than Evra overall and therefore worth signing. But we absolutely need someone with ability, who SAF sees as a left back, to make Evra play at his best or lose his spot in the team. I was hoping that would be Fabio but even when fit he seems to be prefered on the right

If we did bring someone in (which I doubt) then we'd be looking at someone like Baines I reckon. He ticks most of the boxes.

Baines would be a good option, but I feel it would be more like us to sign a younger player more for the future but deemed good enough to push Evra. As I said, I dont really know who is out there other than at Valencia who I watch a lot. Jordi Alba shows great promise at left back despite his size and has secured left back spot for Spain. Its not usual for us to sign players from la liga and spanish players but we went there for De Gea, might be that we're more active recruiting from there in the future

Assou Ekotto is shite at defending.

He hasn't been shite at defending for years and pulling out one mistake when he let Sturridge ghost by him is no more pertinent then me pulling out the 90 minutes he kept Nani in his pocket last season at whl. Especially as whoever is put in front of him is often given license to roam and so he has to control that flank by himself. Ridiculously under-rated by opposition fans, probably because of his poor first season and Hansen's ridiculous comment last season.

I don't really know what's happened with Evra, used to be one of my favourite non-Spurs players and he's by no means shit but he's dropped significantly. There was a time when he and Cole were a level above all the other leftbacks in the league but this clearly isn't the case anymore. I think there's a group of 4/5 leftbacks in the league now that are of a similar level. Which is why, if you are going to look at replacing him ( I don't know if you are or if that's what you all want), whether in the short or long run, you'll surely be buying from abroad.

Defensively he's all over the place.

It's almost like he see's Carrick playing centreback, Rafael playing as a midfielder, Rooney as a defensive midfield and thinks...feck it, I'm going to play as a Left Winger for 50% of the game and prove to SAF I'm versatile as well.

Used to be a rock in the leftback position but almost any half decent winger can get by him now because of all the mental mistakes he makes.

I thought he got forward very well yesterday, but thats never a problem for him.

I'm always surprised at how shit his crossing his though.

Yesterday his crossing was actually better then Nani's....

but yeah, Evra really only has one type of cross he's a master at. Drill the ball across the face of the goal and hope someone gets a flick or taps it home.

Think Fabio looks really uncomfortable at left back and much better on the right really hope we sign a top left back to compete with paddy because if he gets injured then their is no cover anywhere near the same level and we'd really suffer.

Still love the guy. He's committed himself to United totally and hats off to him. I do think he's lost something over the last two seasons and even he said that he had a poor last season. But when he is on the team sheet..I feel ok

Yesterday his crossing was actually better then Nani's....

My crossing was better than Nani's yesterday, and I was in a different fecking country.

20% or something like that... shocking.

I've been on his case for years. He keeps getting caught out and what grates me even more is he that he is always talking a good game but obviously he can't deliver as often as he should as a Utd Captain.
