De Gea > Mignolet
Darmian > Clyne
Smalling > Skrtel
Rojo < Sakho
Shaw > Moreno
Schweinsteiger > Lucas
Herrera > Henderson
Schneiderlin > Milner
Depay = Firmino
Mata = Coutinho
Rooney = Sturridge

Agree with all (except for RBs). I'm not saying Clyne is better, but I don't know anything about Darmian so to comment wouldn't be right. On last seasons form, Skrtel & Smalling are close, but I'd definitely rather have Smalling based on age & potential.

It should be Lucas vs Schneiderlin & Milner vs Schweinsteiger, but either way the results are the same.

I'm expecting Benteke to hit the ground running, looks the real deal IMO. Only Suarez, Aguero and Van Persie have outscored Benteke since the summer of 2012 while playing for much better sides. He also has the most headed goals since his arrival at Aston Villa. Not only that, he's proven to be able to score against any PL opposition including all the topclubs.

I'd say United are pretty much man for man better than Liverpool right through the squad.

Right opposing fans, tomorrow you will see Liverpool without your favourite saviour. No Stevie Gerrard in midfield. I've been waiting a whole calendar year for this. Come on Redmen!! :D

Edit: Come on Rodgers!!
This will end well.

I'd have Sakho in at LCB with Smalling, Coutinho in one of the three AM roles (I'm addicted to 4-2-3-1), and Benteke up front over Rooney (just).

No idea about your new RB though, so can't pick between him and Clyne.

This is how Nazi Germany started.

Sound theory. When he got suspended after our clash at Anfield Liverpool did really well.

Setting off soon, hoping for a better result than last time! Be interesting to see if young Gomez plays, hope he does.

Team rumour:

Mignolet, Clyne, Skrtel, Lovren, Gomez, Henderson, Milner, Ibe, Coutinho, Lallana, Benteke
Subs: Bogdan, Sakho, Lucas, Firmino, Ings, Can, Moreno
Injured: Sturridge, Allen, Flanagan
Not selected: Toure, Ilori, Rossiter, Teixeira, Markovic, Origi

Some very questionable choices in that line-up. Seems like Rodgers has given all his favourites a new start rather than going with who performed best last season.

Lovren and Lallana should be out in my view, even if the latter had a good pre-season.

Still though, it's our first game so I'll be optimistic and say we'll win.

I find it weird how all Liverpool fans collectively praise Shako and want him in the team over Lovren yet Rodgers keeps picking the Croatian ahead of him. Why's that?

Looking at Liverpool's squad on paper and to me it looks so average. I rate Clyne, Milner, Coutinho, Firmino, Sturridge and Benteke but the rest are mediocre. I can't believe Liverpool haven't strengthened at the CB spot and they're also crying out for a CDM. I think they'll be wasting Milner playing him in the centre of the park, he's much better out wide imo. Looking forward to seeing Firmino play though.

Not good enough to break into the top four imo.

I dont think that last season's loss at Stoke was a fluke, and I really expected Stoke to win that day(the scoreline was though)..Arsenal were 4-0 down there last season too, so I think it will be a tough game.
Arsenal were 3-0 down.

This weekend has been very good. I started a week off work. I got to see the match yesterday on a 65" screen in perfect quality (in Japanese, so no annoying commentary). The wife made curry today and I am meeting an old student (19 year old girl) for curry this week.
Come on Stoke. Same as last year please.

Lovren was Rodgers' #1 personal transfer pick last season, Sakho was a committee choice. Rodgers is still trying to prove he didn't pick a donkey, he did and it's ridiculous he is playing him at the expensive of a far better player and long term prospect. Lovren being shite pre-season just compounds the disgust at Rodgers stubbornness.

Rodgers has consistently proved he doesn't have a clue about centre backs.

Still pissed off about how he let our best one walk away so easily.

Wasnt Lovren also poor at Lyon? Ive heard of celebrations when he left...

I wouldn't have Sakho anywhere near the team. Guy's like a rabbit in the headlights. I wouldn't have Coutinho over Mata or Memphis, and I certainly wouldn't have Benteke over Rooney. 4-3-2-1 all the way.

Edit: And I'd have Darmian over Clyne any day

It was strange especially considering Agger is actually good on the ball. Anyway, he's been injured a whole lot back in Brøndby. He might not have been fit for you anyway.

I'm sure he'd have been injured loads for us, he's made of glass. Still should have kept him and played him when fit though, we always played better when he started.

I might be exxegarating a little, but here is a summary of his time there..

Lovren was barely Ligue 1 standard.

"Imagine being 20 [years old] and reading [harsh criticisms about you from the French media]," Lovren said, per Jim Lucas at Southampton's official website. "You start to think that is the truth."

But it was the truth because Lovren was unreliable.

  • Lovren did not speak French and was unable to communicate effectively with his teammates.
  • He gave away possession 27.7 percent of the time he attempted a pass, thus was ineffective in Lyon's build-up play.
  • He was a nonexistent entity from an attacking point of view as a full-back. Averaged 0.3 key passes per game (pass leading to scoring chance) and failed to score or create a goal in 683 minutes.
Incompetent—as opposed to inexperienced—was the prevailing adjective to describe Lovren.

In his final season at Lyon, Lovren's inability to retain standard positional discipline heavily factored into him being sent off three times in league play.

"I was thinking: 'Oh my God, what am I doing?'," Lovren said, per Paul Doyle at The Observer (h/t The Guardian). "[Lyon] didn't have the time to wait for me."

Southampton signing Lovren from Lyon for €10.9/£8.5 million in the 2013 summer transfer window was as bizarre as Alaeddine Yahia saying hello and bye to the Saints.

The idea of Lovren transforming from train-wreck defender to a wall for Southampton would be akin to Iago Aspas registering 10 assistsfrom corners in La Liga on loan at Sevilla this season (currently has zero).

He had a torrid time there, and Lyon were more than welcoming to the huge fee they received for him.

Saw him play a few times for Lyon his last year there. he was horrendous. I was amazed with how well he played for Saints. in hindsight we have to attribute a lot of that to the set up around him and the midfield in front of him. Though individually he was still good.

Wasnt it a personality issue between the two in that they didnt get along? Like Reina

Partly yeah. Agger had a few choice words about Rodgers.

I think that fall out occurred after he was dropped though. For some reason Rodgers made Agger vice captain then decide to relegate him to the bench.

Maybe he just wanted to play his own players..managers do that a lot..even though it falls flat a lot..e.g Remember Paul Konchesky

I'm very excited, a draw at Stoke isn't such a bad result but I'm hoping for a win of course. Henderson/Milner combo in midfield looks questionable though, picking Lovren over Sakho as well. Lallana over Firmino can be justified but I want to see the latter, just because. If we don't fall behind, I can see us getting a win. Benteke will score!

Seems Rodgers is learning from van gaal with the keepers kicking long to the big man.... Shame for Liverpool that benteke is no Fellaini...

Still go to big man, knock down to little man rinse and repeat is the order of the season...

Breton Rodgers football genius

Some classic reverse psychology from Rodgers there. Loves a mind game or two

Meh. They will crack as usual when the pressure comes on later in the season.

Coutinho has a sweet foot, will surely make a difference in few games this season, but still overall only a decent player for me.

Think that's a bit harsh but a decent summation, he is capable of game changing moments but hasn't quite reached the level where he is consistently doing it, however he has age on his side and has improved in that area over time.
