OT EVACUATED | Device signed as having been recovered, could NOT be detected by sniffer dogs

To be fair most explosives don't alert metal detectors, and mobile phones are hardly going to arouse suspicion on their own. If you get the components into the ground the rest would be fairly simple.
No, but a box with a mobile phone stuck on (supposedly) would.
@dwd they should be picking up a box. Everytime I've been, you take your jacket off and get patted down. Anything in your hands is checked.

Really? I genuinely don't remember being patted down since this season. Never did in the North Stand and certainly don't remember even being delayed getting in to the east stand, but then this season I have to queue for a min or two while everyone gets searched.

Yeah, it's not the best search either. I remember against Midgt only being able to get one arm out of my coat because I was holding my phone etc. and he wasn't fussed.

Curiously enough, Stan, the bit you should be capitalising is about the situation, not the fact that your shitty, drama-obsessed channel is LIVE.

The Telegraph just tweeted that the police are waiting for the military to arrive. I'm not sure if that's true or not obviously.

Because no one has thought about the possibility of a bomb in a football ground before today?

They police can't indiscriminately secure every public facility, they do so under high alert situations only.
Pretty sure this would be regarded as a "high alert situation" in anyone's book.
People react to things. The extended checks at the turnstiles came about after the Paris attacks. It's only logical to believe there will be more security procedures in place at OT following this surely?

"Greater Manchester Police is working with staff at Manchester United to investigate a suspicious item that has been found at the Old Trafford stadium. "Assistant Chief Constable John O’Hare said: 'We are doing everything we can to investigate this item as quickly as possible, however our priority is obviously to ensure the safety of everyone in the stadium and surrounding area. As a result, today’s game has been abandoned and a controlled evacuation of the stadium has now taken place. “We are awaiting the imminent arrival of military colleagues to come and support us and establish what exactly we are dealing with. “We don’t make these decisions lightly and we have done this today to ensure the safety of all those attending. I am thankful for everyone’s support and assistance and we will continue to provide updates on this matter as soon as they become available.'"

PL

"The decision to abandon the Manchester United versus AFC Bournemouth match was taken after the police advised of the necessity to deal with a suspect package.

"When it comes to matters of security it is obviously right that Manchester United and the Premier League place the safety of supporters and employees foremost.

"The Premier League will seek to rearrange the fixture as soon as practically possible and will advise fans accordingly.

"It is always the last resort to abandon one of our fixtures and while we apologise for the inconvenience caused to fans we are sure, in the circumstances, they will appreciate the need to do so."

FFs there's some serious shit happening if they're calling the army. I don't know how things work in the UK but that's darn serious. Calling bomb disposal for a suspicious package is one thing but the army, the threat must be real. Praying for everybody's safety.

They usually cover it with blankets that are designed to absorb the blast. Some energy will escape the blankets, but the damage will depend on whether or not they can move the package, and how well they can cover it up.

Package is probably small, as it would have to be brought in, so other than damage to immediate surroundings, it shouldn't be that bad.
thanks :-)

Unless the Manchester police has their own bomb squad, they would be military that is referred to. Alternately, the military will just be there to help block off the area or similar.

I am not an expert on bombs, but for any IED, you would need to have shit loads of explosive to have any sort of major impact..

and such loads cannot be brought into the stadium and be in packages. am I being stupid here??

Yeah they're only really fussed with bags; I always wear a big jacket and they never check inside that. It'd take 3 hours to get everyone inside if they checked everyone properly.

But even then... why is it up to the police when they start negotiating a replay?

Would imagine its purely that the police aren't allowing free movement within the stadium yet. Not that they cant arrange replay, more they cant do jack shit until police and now apparently the army are satisfied their job is done.

Pipes would be the shrapnel.

The police obviously need to confirm the new date. I can understand them not wanting to get into all that until the current situation is resolved.
