Onana has not worked out. We need a new keeper.

Awful, he is not an elite goalkeeper based on his technique. Again, buying 60m player a year after being bought for free.

What's the point? He's been out of the game for an entire year, not playing. Likely won't be sharp and will make mistakes.

I wasn't really been serious about him coming back, but with hindsight we should have kept him over buying Onana.

But we're stuck with him now, so we'll just have to hope he improves.

I want to like this kid, but he's not up to the job. It's bite the bullet time. Admit it's been a failed experiment and get a better keeper in.

At this point I hope we can sell him before his value tanks even further, because his fundamentals are getting completely and utterly exposed. Even during his “good form” earlier in the year he looked lost at times.
We wouldnt get £20 mill for him, but agree he needs selling

I think we would, it’s been short term enough that a lot of it could be chalked up to the whole team being a disaster all season. A second season of this would cause problems though.

It’s almost like he goes out of his way to dive out of the way of shots. I’ve never seen a keeper like him playing at such a high level. The number of times he’s rooted to the spot is also very worrying.

Did you watch DDG last year in the cup final Vs City?

I know but is he worse than Onana? I'm only joking though, a part from the wanting mourinho to manage us for the cup final (not beyond that though).

Bringing someone in that ran his course at the club and clearly needed replacing back just because the one we bought to replace him isn't much better isn't really the way either. These two just need to get on with their lives elsewhere, no more games for us please.

Can't believe the high amount of posts I've read on social media recently where people are picking who they would keep & who they would get rid of during this summer & a large amount of people are saying keep Onana, you even see some posts on here with people saying keep Onana.
Probably opposition supporters ?

He was bought purely because of his passing. Genuine question... how many goals has he set up?

It's the very basic goalkeeping technique which is just not there? It's weird how a keeper makes it to the top level with his ability at the fundamental aspects of the game.

Its a bit hard for him to setup goals in a team where the first choice attack consists of a number 10 has seemingly no interest in playing, the number 11 who is awful and way out of his depth at this level, and a number 21 who is on the wrong side so has to cut in on to his left foot before he can do anything.

Moving on from De Gea was still the right decision, people are sugar coating his final period here. We needed a change, sadly this Onana experiment thus far has been pretty damn disappointing.

The one position you want consistency & reliability is your keeper. VDS was the perfect example. He didn’t really fluctuate much. He was reliable & you knew what you would get from him week in week out. He was a proper 7/10 every game type of player.

Onana is the complete opposite. He’s erratic & inconsistent. One week he’s putting in a 10/10 performance the next he’s dropping a 3/10 and letting everything in. It just creates chaos and makes it really hard to build a strong platform. I bet defenders hate playing with him.

Clown keeping again. I rarely call to sell a player after just one season, but he can go.

There are ways that this could have been managed:

- We could have looked for a keeper that was among the best in class instead of someone who Ten Hag knew.
- We could have given De Gea an year extension and got a young talented keeper to take over for him. Kinda of like what we did with De Gea.

Over the last XI years our problem has been that we decide to recruit a worse player than the player we need to move on from. Rojo for Evans, Falcao for Chicha, Maguire for Smalling, AWB for Dalot, Onana for DeGea...there is a pattern.

€51m plus €4m in bonus so more like £44m rising to £47m. The papers inflate our fees enough as it is without us contributing to it.

Regardless, Chelsea blew a wad on Kepa and moved on quickly. Arsenal spent £30m on Ramsdale after letting Martinez leave and then went and got Raya. Sometimes goalkeeper signings go wrong or aren’t good enough long term.

Worst case we buy someone else and Onana sits on the bench or becomes a cup keeper and then we quietly move him on in a few years. It doesn’t have to be a £50m goalkeeper.

Best case is I could see Saudi teams still going for him. We might get something like 2/3 of our money back and he’d get a pay

Just had a thought occur to me. How about Kobel for Sancho?

The most annoying thing is, due to the players in front of him, I don't think we've ever got to see the best of his good qualities. Instead we've just had to endure how poor his keeping is, which although I expected some clangers from him, his basic errors, and the amount of them, are unforgivable.

Talisman like goalies are critical for a team that wants to go far and as nice of a lad as he seems to be - Onana isn't that. Maybe Neuer wants to finish out his career here. To be fair to him however: we cant score to save our lives so even with a shite defense, he s going to look even worse in this team than he probably is.

It's a shame we can't see more of Altay, who has made a single appearance all season. Even with how poor Onana has been throughout.

I'm struggling to remember a time in the last two decades where we had a keeper who played in 99% of matches without rotation. We've had some stellar seasons with VDS and DDG in goal and even they were rotated more frequently for guys like Kuszczak, Lindegaard, Romero, Valdes, Henderson... All of which seemed more steady and confident in net than Onana. It really couldn't have gone any worse for him. He'll have a new manager in a few weeks, which immediately puts him on the chopping block.

Best thing he has going for him at the moment is all of the other areas of the pitch that need investing in. He might well see another season unfortunately.

Ten Hag's got such a shit personality, can't inspire the team to save his life but apparently a great salesman. He was capable of convince the Glazers to sign all these duds. Figure that one out.

I typically give players until their second season, when they're no longer the new guy to pass judgement so maybe he can turn it around but he just doesn't look very agile to me to be an elite shot stopper.

Old man Neuer is 38 and looks like he doesn't like running off his line anymore. Precisely the type of signing we need to avoid.

I've said this for sometime and repeated it on the match day thread:

He doesn't make saves, he makes blocks. Shots have to hit him.

His footwork is a joke for a professional keeper, always late, leaden footed, is still setting himself as shots come in, leaving him with distances to cover. Example; Hughes had a volley from the edge of the area, it's in the middle of the goal but Onana is at finger tips to make what is a routine catch tbh.

I've said it so many times in here but his hand eye coordination and technique in actually handling shots and ball manipulation is absolutely insane, I've never seen anything like it. It's why you see so many shots come off of him at weird, unpredictable angles, seemingly always back into danger.

The ball always hits the base of his hand/top of his wrist, like a block, sending the ball back where it comes.

He cannot judge the flight of the ball so saves rarely hit the "meat" of his palm and fingers, instead hit his wrist where, and this is crucial, he has not control.

He had no athletic ability, no spring, slow to get down, cannot cover the top corners, cannot cover the bottom corners, really does play like a 5'8" keeper.

So much technically wrong with him but everything was overlooked because he can pass the ball (so what tbh) and he's ETH guy.
Honestly, this is a very good breakdown

It's unbelievable that Antony and Onana are ETH players in his previous club and asked to be signed for Man Utd for big money. ETH is self sabotaging himself.

Thanks, I just see so many issues
Your breakdown of him is absolutely spot on. As I wrote some time ago, he needs a complete technical reboot. Goalkeeping 101. And preferably not with us.

I struggle to believe that he was this lacking at his previous clubs.
