He has some of the worst goalkeeping basics in the league. His positioning and footwork are appalling. He can save a shot sometimes sure, but he manages to make it 10x harder for himself by not being set up properly in the first place.
2nd goal is pure power, you'd have to be standing directly in the way to stop it.I think he's definitely a better goalkeeper than he showed early on in his time here, but he's been awful today, Palace's second and fourth goals should never have gotten past him.
He was awful. There's absolutely every reason to come in and slate him.2nd goal is pure power, you'd have to be standing directly in the way to stop it.
4th has 3 players in the path of a shot struck inside the area under no pressure.
It's a weird game to have watched and then come in here slating the keeper.

Perfect summaryI've said this for sometime and repeated it on the match day thread:
He doesn't make saves, he makes blocks. Shots have to hit him.
His footwork is a joke for a professional keeper, always late, leaden footed, is still setting himself as shots come in, leaving him with distances to cover. Example; Hughes had a volley from the edge of the area, it's in the middle of the goal but Onana is at finger tips to make what is a routine catch tbh.
I've said it so many times in here but his hand eye coordination and technique in actually handling shots and ball manipulation is absolutely insane, I've never seen anything like it. It's why you see so many shots come off of him at weird, unpredictable angles, seemingly always back into danger.
The ball always hits the base of his hand/top of his wrist, like a block, sending the ball back where it comes.
He cannot judge the flight of the ball so saves rarely hit the "meat" of his palm and fingers, instead hit his wrist where, and this is crucial, he has not control.
He had no athletic ability, no spring, slow to get down, cannot cover the top corners, cannot cover the bottom corners, really does play like a 5'8" keeper.
So much technically wrong with him but everything was overlooked because he can pass the ball (so what tbh) and he's ETH guy.
His save that lead to the corner for their third goal was horrendous. I think it might have been the Hughes shot you mention. It went absolutely nowhere near the corner of the goal but he’s flying across the goal saving with his fingertips because he either completely fecked up his positioning or some way somehow didn’t expect a shot from a player wide open at the edge of the box. Don’t know which is worse.I've said this for sometime and repeated it on the match day thread:

Unless the 84 isn't for your year of birth, you should probably try acting a little older than 12.@sebsheep - take the L tonight mate, you won’t find positivity here!! Kudos for trying though.

Thanks, used to play in goal and these things are just glaring to anyone who's played the position.Perfect summary
Even the other people who don't like him only said 2...What's weird about seeing a keeper let in 4 goals, 3 of which were absolutely saveable and coming on a fan forum to discuss that fact?
Whats weird to me is the mental back flips some fans are still willing to do to justify this goalkeeper who doesn't really save shots.
My only hope is a combination of Ineos and the new manager will be ruthless enough to move him on ASAP. No top team can have a sieve in nets. What's he good at other than parrying shots that are straight at him?
Yeah, it's poor positioning and terrible footwork. Hughes hadn't exactly leathered it at the goal, it's a tame effort and yet he's panicking he won't get there. His save that lead to the corner for their third goal was horrendous. Wow. Friendly banter unwelcome. Ok - you do you.Unless the 84 isn't for your year of birth, you should probably try acting a little older than 12.
To make another De Gea comparison: De Gea's biggest strength, a strength which the typical football fan doesn't even notice, was that he made saves where he put the ball away from immediate danger. When De Gea saved the ball you could generally assume that it was saved and there didn't need to be an extra scramble to get the ball out of danger. Thanks, used to play in goal and these things are just glaring to anyone who's played the position.
I think it's fine to not judge it as awful. It's saleable but looking at where it ends up in the net and ignoring everything surrounding it is silly. It's also the 4th goal...I'm sorry, but anyone defending him for that fourth goal isn't being serious.
Yeah, that save stood out to me as well. At first I thought it was a good save because he made it look good, but then on replay it just became obvious that the reason it looks good is because he's so late and it really looked like it should have been a quite easy catch. His footwork is a joke for a professional keeper, always late, leaden footed, is still setting himself as shots come in, leaving him with distances to cover. At this point I hope we can sell him before his value tanks even further, because his fundamentals are getting completely and utterly exposed. Even during his “good form” earlier in the year he looked lost at times.Yeah, it's poor positioning and terrible footwork. Hughes hadn't exactly leathered it at the goal, it's a tame effort and yet he's panicking he won't get there.
This is exactly it, looks like his entire time has been spent on playing as an outfield player and the actual technical aspects of keeping stopped when he was 15.To make another De Gea comparison: De Gea's biggest strength, a strength which the typical football fan doesn't even notice, was that he made saves where he put the ball away from immediate danger. Onana sometimes looks like an outfield player put in goal when he makes saves (or blocks as you call it). His technique is just wild.
I'm shocked that he's NO improvement on De Gea when claiming balls and he's had zero impact with his long balls. I'm surprised by how bad he's been.
PerfectThat’s his technique when there’s a shot on target

The Olise one was also a joke, it's a decent strike, firm but no movement, but that never beats DDG, or any other keeper in the league tbh.Yeah, that save stood out to me as well. Yeah, it looks very weird as well, but I guess Onana had already decided he was going in the other corner. He tends to do that quite a lot it seems. The Olise one was also a joke, it's a decent strike, firm but no movement, but that never beats DDG, or any other keeper in the league tbh.
It's just, how many times have we seen a goal this season where you think that the goalkeeper isn't specifically to blame but you'd want him to save that kind of shot.I think it's fine to not judge it as awful. It's saleable but looking at where it ends up in the net and ignoring everything surrounding it is silly. It's also the 4th goal...
Respectfully disagree. It's a well struck shot and he sees it late. It's truly horrible goalkeeping... And speaks to a wider issue of shot stopping technique.
And it could be the tenth goal... it would still be horrible goalkeeping.
He has to gamble because he is aware of his physical limitations, he can't move, leap or cover the far side of the goal so he cheats.Yeah, it looks very weird as well, but I guess Onana had already decided he was going in the other corner. He tends to do that quite a lot it seems.
Trust me, it would make a huge differenceI guarantee that you could replace Onana with another keeper and it would make not a fecking jot of difference. When a team concedes shots at the rate we do, it's absolutely inevitable that there will be some that he lets in that he probably shouldn't.
I won't disagree with you too much on that, I wouldn't have him as a top shot stopper. It's just, how many times have we seen a goal this season where you think that the goalkeeper isn't specifically to blame but you'd want him to save that kind of shot.
How many goals have we conceded like that + the shit goals we've conceded that were definitely him to blame vs whoa Onana really saved our skin with that goalkeeping.
