They'd have to extend out over the railway track, which is not a trivial undertaking. I'm not sure that extension alone really solves the underlying problem either, which is more one of a decrepit structure and badly outdated facilities.

The cranes would have to go on the rail track. How could you rebuild the South? Probably just corporate boxes.

The train track is a big issue I think. It would need to be rerouted which is very expensive.

Same problem as croke park in ireland. There is a train track behind one of the ends.

Build a stadium right next to it and on the final phase knock down an existing stand and build the final stand of new old Trafford on the old Trafford stadium and that keeps the new old Trafford connected to the old foot print. Make the rest of old Trafford that's left a United village with a museum, hotel, bars, club shops, entertainment area for families etc.

Apparently that’s all of our land so yeah it’s possible.

Yes. I think they own most of the land around the ground. Besides the car park is big enough.

Cheers. In that case, a new build seems a viable solution and arguably less-disruptive than an extensive refurbishment of the existing stadium.

Build the new stadium adjacent to the existing Old Trafford (whilst continuing to play at the existing Old Trafford) and then, once that construction is complete, build a new smaller stadium in the Old Trafford footprint, for the academy & women's matches (as per the Telegraph article).

Edit or @Steve Bruce's idea above:

I would be sad to lose Old Trafford to a new build, even if it makes good financial sense. The feeling of us falling behind our rivals in various areas in inescapable but I would hope the answer isn't to build an Emirates-style bowl and charge Emirates-style prices for everything.

They'd figure it out if it came to it. When it's a project in the hundreds of millions these aren't insurmountable obstacles.

Can't see it happening though as the only alternative stadium is City's which won't be feasible as an alternative venue. You'd get people painting the seats red and all sorts...and also the more they look into these things the more the costs and time starts to add up.

Would rather we revamped it anyway. Or at least wait until we're out of the phase of every new stadium looking like a giant toilet seat.

I’m pretty certain you could set the top tiers back so that they are part way over the railway, without having to take any land or build anything structural on the other side. It might not be quite as high as the rest of the ground, but a new roof would conceal that.

Neither are big enough.

Don’t think there’s anything near by that’s acceptable really. Can’t see the Etihad happening.

Principality Stadium would be a good one but bit far.

They're not great options but I'd at least prefer it to be in Greater Manchester even though I don't go and of course it wouldn't be up to me at all. Just seems right for some reason.

Failing that, at least the North or North West. Maybe Goodison Park/Everton's new one if it's done by then or Hillsborough? Definitely not Anfield.

Edit: Good location but highly improbable for all sorts of reasons; Old Trafford Cricket ground?

Would prefer they just gave it a good revamp and upgraded what needs to be rather than piling on another billion in debt to play in a soulless toilet bowl looking stadium that will be probably just be named after the highest bidder.

If they knock it down completely they can just move the whole thing back towards the west car park. Or just design the tiers differently.

They won't extend over the railway line and the canal is the other side but there's plenty of room on the site overall.

By a revamp, what would you prefer?

Knock down Old Trafford? feck off. Custodians of this club should do anything but. You should privileged to be tasked with modernising and evolving the stadium, but it should never be knocked down. Trigger’s broom comes to mind.

Make no mistake, if this happens we will brand the shit out of it. It's in our blood.

The Tezos Theatre of Dreams at the site formerly known as Old Trafford

very much doubt it!

Glazers are worried about upsetting the fan base as it is.

the easiest way to do it and not worry about where we play our homes games is to move the club down south, where the majority of real united fans are.

I hate the idea of United building a new stadium. It's probably sentimental of me as an outsider, but it's such an iconic ground, it'd just be a shame to move away from the ground where Busby and Ferguson managed, where Best, Charlton, Cantona and Rooney played.

The same goes for Anfield. I get it financially, it makes sense to capitalise, but I think you lose a lot by moving away from that historic ground. It adds to the present day teams that they are iconic grounds, it gives the crowd a bit extra, and it's more intimidating for opposing teams in the Champions League etc..

Oh definitely.

I’m just observing that IF they were to stick at fettling the existing stadium, it would be possible to increase the size of the Main Stand (showing my age there) without the need to do a full “extend across the railway” job.

Personally I would be sad to see this happen, I understand it may need to happen at some point, but the idea that Old Trafford as I know it wouldn’t exist anymore would make me sad.

I can’t see the Glazers finding that kind of cash so I’m not too worried right now.

Yeah, I'd fecking hate the idea of having another one of the sterile, soulless copy-paste jobs like the Emirates, Wembley, Spurs' one etc.

In the unlikely event anything gets done, the way Madrid are going about it seems to be the best way, but the right time to start that if they were going to would have been during the covid empty ground year.

Going a bit OT, Burnden Park was a bit of a dump, but I thought it was a tragedy that its replacement was so far out of town. Even if the old site was too small, surely there were other derelict sites adjacent to the town centre that could have been used? Bolton has really suffered from idiotic “out of town” developments.
