Nuri Sahin

Our midfield can hold their own with most teams in the world. They've proved this over many years.

Last season we were suspect against the best teams, no-one can argue that. And our best midfielders are getting older, much older than they were a few seasons ago.

We have the best attacking options around in my opinion and our defence isn't too shabby either.

But we're seriously lacking in midfield and the red tinted members in here who seriously think our midfield options are good are seriously deluding themselves.

One season. He moved in 2011, Dortmund won the double in 2011/12.

There is no point denying Sahin is a very good addition to Liverpool's squad if he can reach his best level, the level he showed at Dortmund in 2010/11. Still he is coming to a new league, without a proper pre-season, just coming back from a lenghty injury lay-off, we will see how he copes.
And yes, I watched him a lot at Dortmund, as he was hyped beyond reason from the age of 17.

I thought they won the double in 2010/11 as well, my mistake, but he was good for them in more than just that title winning season.

Ignore them, they're bitter.

I am very jealous - your midfield is shaping up very nicely.

Lucas, Allen, Sahin and Gerrard are quality players and will fit into Rodger's 4-4-3 system well - I fear that you lot actually might start winning games next season. Still think you need a striker though.

Probably the only way they'll get Champion's League football.

The midfield options are fine, not great but fine. The one big hope is Cleverley who impressed during the Olympics (playing 90mins for the most part) and against Hannover worked brilliantly with Kagawa. Now, Kagawa will bring a new feel to the team and its one that has been lacking for sometime. As long as no tombolaesque team selections are made we're in great shape imo.

We lost Fletcher, Anderson, and Cleverley for most of last season.

And yet we still had a better record against "the best teams" than we've had in the last few years. Kinda makes you wonder what the feck some people are on about.

We seem to ignore the fact most of success and attacking play is from the wings.

People are mostly beating the team (midfield) for getting knocked out the Champions league in group stages - which was mostly due to a lack of respect for the opposition and not playing our best players.

I wouldn't be worried about Sahin if I was a Liverpool supporter. If fit for a season he's probably their best midfielder now - if he can adapt to the league.

It's Gerrard, who was a great player and the rest of their midfield, where they possibly lack top 4 quality. The midfield is not crap (well maybe Adam is) but rather underwhelming. Lucas, Henderson, Allen, Gerrard, Cole, Downing on the wing is hardly the envy of the footballing world.

Yep, SAF fecked up last year's CL group stage by fannying around resting players, fielding weakened teams in the early games; afterall, who the feck is FC Basel? Well, FC Basel showed us exactly who FC Basel is. By the the end we had no momentum, no confidence, and we got stung for it.

Entirely correct. We did brilliantly in the league, and terribly in Europe, but we clearly took the league much, much more seriously.

The midfield obsession comes largely from most fans knowing relatively little about football and loving an easy explanation for our falling just short of our very, very high standards, in my not especially humble opinion. We're falling short of those standards for a number of reasons, of which the midfield is only one. We have issues in the middle of park, but they're almost entirely down to a lack of depth and Sir Alex's tactical limitations. The way people go on about it you'd think we have Miller and Smith in midfield, and if we'd only prostrate ourselves before Madrid then maybe we could borrow one of their kids and stop ourselves from suffering the indignities of one of the five best league performances in English football history.

Should be noted that this isn't officially done or anything. Just a few weeks ago sources from Turkey said it was a done deal to us so until it is official. I think R.Madrid have accepted their offer but I'm not sure if the player has as he wants to join Arsenal but I think that may not be an option for him.

Would be very surprised if Liverpool have an option to buy. He's very highly rated and has had one injury hit season at Real. Would be daft to give up on him so soon.

I don't think they have any option to buy which is why R.Madrid favour sending him there as I believe we insist on that and likewise for Spurs. Also Mourinho is good pals with the Liverpool coach as well so is encouraging Sahin to go there.

More importantly he won't be helping a rival CL team, and most importantly there is absolutely no way the player will want to stay there.

I'm not I'd consider us a CL rival :o

What a patronising load of shite.

Our midfield was fine years ago when Carrick was younger and more mobile, Scholes was in his pomp, so was Giggs and we had Ronaldo running the show with a fit Fletcher and even Park stepping up in the big games.

We simply don't have them options anymore. We're all getting super excited about Cleverley the 'wonder kid' who none of us really know much about at the top level yet but at the same time take the piss out of Liverpool for bringing in the likes of Allen and maybe Sahin.

We really could do with shipping out the Andersons of this world and bringing in some real quality.

Why some can't see this really puzzles me.

Based on what I heard on the radio:

Jose Mourinho is happy for Nuri Sahin to develop under Brendan Rodgers because he's aware of his methods from their time at Chelsea.

Unlike other clubs that have showed an interest in Sahin - Liverpool are prepared to take him without an option to buy and are not competing against Real in the Champions League.

So why did we win as many games last season domestically as we ever did in the Ronaldo era?

Looking increasingly likely that he'll join the dippers in the next 48 hours. A year loan with option to buy after that

Now if we had gotten him along with RvP and Kagawa, it would be the best summer ever after 2007

*if* the option to buy is true, you'd have to wonder why we weren't sniffing - if it doesn't work out then not much lost. I'm not sold on the option to buy though unless it's set rather high.. Otherwise why don't they just simply sell him.

If Fletcher can get back to his pre illness best, i've no concerns about the strength of United's midfield. There is enough creativity there and Carrick is defensively strong. All we lack is a midfield crusher and that's exactly what Darren Fletcher did very very well. It's why we absolutely dominated most teams in 08/09.

I don't get this Champions League rumour.

He wouldn't be able to play for Arsenal against Real in the Champions Leauge if he was on loan there. Theoretically you're strengthening Arsenal against other teams and weakening them if you're drawn against them.

Doesn't it work only in Premier League?

To state the blindingly obvious, the times when our midfield has looked weak over the past couple of years have been against strong opposition. The reason that Real Madrid want him out on loan is that he isn't ready to play strong opposition and they aren't going to give him game time to get ready.

The only time I thought we might consider a loan deal for him (or just about anyone) was last winter when Fletcher, Anderson and Cleverley were out and we needed cover - a Henrik Larsson sort of loan. Of course, Paul Scholes came back and our European run meant we didn't need another extra man.

A loan deal will help Liverpool, I'm not sure it would help Arsenal but I guess that's Wenger's call. A loan or a sale with Madrid buyback isn't much use to us - we need longterm top quality, not a player who needs game time to become top quality for someone else.

Thats the reason we will be never interested in these type of deals.

Defence, bulging with talent.
Midfield, bulging with talent.
Forwards, bulging with talent.

The obviously undernourished area lies on the wings now.

We sign Sahin on the same day Spurs lose Modric, Arsenal lose van persie and with song on the way too.

Top 4 looks like it is etching closer.

Spurs will sign players. Arsenal will probably too. Both are better than you. I think Everton are also closing the gap.

Arsenal have already signed Giroud, Podolski and are very likely to bring in more new faces. Spurs will sign 1-2 strikers, and a midfielder, having already added Sigurdsson and Vertonghen.

I'll be astonished if you finish 4th, there is very little chance for that to happen. United, City & Chelsea are dead certs to finish ahead of you, so you need to battle it out with Arsenal, Spurs, Newcastle and Everton. Can't see you getting Champions League at all, your squad isn't good enough.

Oh and I forgot about Newcastle.

So Liverpool basically paid £15m to buy Joe Allen and then replaced him with Sahin a week later? Shrewd business.

Arsenal have signed three very good players though. I'd still expect them to come fourth at this stage, although I do think Liverpool will come fifth if I had to bet. Still, it depends on who teams buy yet.

If I had to put money on it right now, it'd be this. Don't think it's nearly as clear-cut as some here like to make out though. Our squad is better than most here give credit for.
