No transfers in January

Saf must have known the Fletcher situation in the summer and didn't buy then, so I just can't see it happening.

Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson insists Glazers will dig deep in transfer window
Sir Alex Ferguson claims Manchester United’s owners, the Glazer family, will give him money to spend in the January transfer window but insists he will not be pressured into making hasty signings.

The United manager, whose team face Wigan at home, is attempting to soften the impact of an injury crisis in his midfield, which has seen Anderson, Tom Cleverley and Darren Fletcher all sidelined with long-term problems.
The Glazers have been the target of criticism for a perceived lack of financial support for Ferguson in the market, but the Scot is adamant they will back him if he asks for funds.
“If a really top-class player became available, then we would go for him,” he said. “But let me reiterate, contrary to what some people seem to be fixated about, money for a transfer is not a problem if I deem it necessary.
“I will not be swayed by the endless tweets and blogs urging the club to get busy in the transfer market next month. But I will certainly listen.
I am too long in the tooth to resist new ideas simply out of prejudice and stubbornness.”
Ferguson also took a swipe at rivals Manchester City, warning their vast financial resources are no guarantee of silverware.

“Yes, money can buy success, as we saw when Chelsea suddenly became cash rich and we are witnessing a similar surge by Manchester City under their wealthy owners,” Ferguson added. “Their transfer clout has taken them to the top of the league and they are favourites to win the title. But while recruiting some of the world’s leading players can lift you into contention for honours, it doesn’t necessarily take you all the way, as I hope we will be able to demonstrate before the end of the season as other factors come into play.”
With his midfield so stretched, Ferguson has challenged Michael Carrick to become a “pivotal” figure for the club and fill the void left by Paul Scholes’s retirement. Ferguson has started Carrick in each of United’s last six league games and he scored his first goal in 70 appearances during the 2-0 victory at Queens Park Rangers last Sunday.
“We have two experienced players playing right at their peak now – Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick,” Ferguson said. “Rio’s form in the last few weeks has been absolutely fantastic, but Michael has been one of our best players. He’s been instrumental in what’s happening to the team at the moment and he has grabbed the nettle – there’s no question about that.
“In some ways, he’s maybe seen the departure of Paul Scholes as his opportunity to be the main man in midfield. But I think it’s time that Michael became the pivotal player of our team.
“He’s a laid-back character – quiet and unassuming – but in different periods during his time here, he’s shown his quality. Now is the time for him to start a long period of dominating the centre of midfield like he has in the last few weeks.”
Ferguson also insists Ryan Giggs can maintain his remarkable career for at least another season at the highest level. “I think Ryan can play another year,” Ferguson said. “There’s no evidence at this moment in time that his energy, stamina or speed are decreasing. In fact, they’re exactly the same as the last two or three years. It’s amazing. It all depends on what Ryan thinks about his future, too.”
In the meantime, Giggs will equal Bobby Charlton’s all-time club record of 756 starts if he begins the match against Wigan.

Just can't imagine Sir Fergie referring to 'tweets' at all though!

I'm not surprised by anything he said except that he mentioned tweets and blogs  not sure a lot of 70 year olds know that.

The way he refers to the 'endless tweets' suggests he is a regular member of the site. Very bizarre imo, although I think it's an excellent statement and one that has been needed for a while.

It re-assures the muppets, and takes away (believe it or not) one of the biggest reasons that they (including myself) come up with on why the club hasn't been buying the 'top' players in Europe, but it also allows the anti-muppets to say, 'You see? Now STFU muppets' and everyone can relax knowing/thinking that Fergie remains in total control and buy almost anybody he likes within reason.

Reassuring comments. Hope to see us in for Gotze/Hazard type talents this summer.

i read an article in the daily mail. very interesting situation with modric. contract extension offered in september that he has yet to sign. could come down to wages and i think it would be worth it if we offered him some good wages. gaitan and modric this summer and we are set

Spot on. So contrary to what people here think, SAF, surprisingly is aware of our midfield situation and the need for someone to step up and grab the scruff by its neck. What we've spent 100+ pages discussing, he summarised in 50 words.

We may see some transfers in January but whether it will tackle CM remains to be seen. SAF may get Clyne (promising fullback at the end of his contract) and he may decide to bring in a striker to replace Berba but that would be it. I hope that Im wrong though.

BTW Giggs is set to sign a new contract which may mean that we wont see the urgency to invest in midfield for another year.

Kaka should go to either Milan or Arsenal imo, I don't see him being any good anywhere else. He is at his best when he is the main man, at Milan he was/is/will be worshipped there and will no doubt be given preferential treatment in the team, and at Arsenal they're missing Fabregas & Nasri and just bought in lesser replacements so I think there is some room for Kaka to be a big name in the team.

Anyway saw this today:

Manchester United are poised to test Tottenham's resolve with a £30m January move for play-maker Luka Modric.

Why would Tottenham sell and jeopardize their chance of finishing in the top4

Would a midfield signing actually help us? I realise we haven't exactly been playing tough teams but our midfield in the last few games has had a good synergy about it, adding a new player to that might hinder us more than it would help us.

Edit: While they bed in, that is. Long term it would but for this season the pressure to perform and the expectation for them to be played might not actually help the team win the league. Especially while Carrick is in some of the best form of his career currently.

Just realised I meant to post that in the 'Sunday Shite' thread. Facepalm.

Thing is Luka hasnt signed a new contract that was offered in september. We might as well go for him. If not now, at least in the summer.

Even easier not to sell at all and wait until Summer, I say.

If we're signing a player like Modric, I don't see why not but I'd be hesitant buying from the continent until summer.

This is the one January it might make sense to buy a young foreign player to be honest. i don't think we need one, but the UEFA cup offers us a positive chance to blood players into the United way in relative low pressure yet good quality games.

I don't think we need to bring in a star in this window, but bringing in someone, preferably with experience, who can play midfield or defence would be good for me. Although we were comfortable today against another team/ without the red, it could have been different. In the defence and in midfield we currently have too many injury prone players and I think it might cost us at some stage. A loan would be great but I can't think who.

Jeremi Toulalan? How's he doing at Malaga?

No idea, but him, or a player like him would be great. Can't see it happening though. I just think we're one player short. If either vidic/fletcher were fit it wouldn't be an issue, but with both out I think we'll need someone.

We've picking too many injuries so a midfielder could help. Modric won't take Carrick's place either. The former is an attacking midfielder, the latter a defensive one. However, Id rather see us tackle the injury problem first. Its pointless spending 40m on Modric to then see him feck off to the treatment room a month after signing him up. Having so many injuries at the same time, year in, year out is unacceptable.

Sir Alex Ferguson has denied suggestions that he is set to heavily invest in January, instead claiming he will not buy "just on a whim" in order to counter Manchester United's ever-growing injury list.

The 69-year-old insists he will only delve into next month's transfer window if a long-term target becomes available, and will avoid making any quick-fix signings.

Ferguson told MUTV: "I don't think I'll change my tactic on that [buying in January] because, if there's a player who I have been interested in, and he was available in January, we would try and do business.

"But there's no such player really on the horizon that way, unless we can identify someone we've been monitoring a lot because we don't buy just on a whim at this club.

"Normally, we try and have a good progress report on the player, particularly background information on him and there's no-one at this moment in time who meets that criteria."

The Scottish boss also suggested that instead of buying he may look to his youth set-up to solve the club's injury woes, with the likes of Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison likely to feature in the coming months.

"They're getting stronger as they get older, Paul Pogba will be 19 in March. Ezekiel Fryers has been involved. Larnell Cole, Jesse Lingard and Ravel Morrison have all been involved.

"When you think 'okay, possibly the standard has risen since the days when Ryan [Giggs] made his debut at 17, even our Darren [Ferguson] was young and Lee Sharpe made his debut at 17'. Quite a few players did at that time.

"But they have good ability and a good standard of play themselves so I wouldn't be adverse to trying one or two, particularly in home matches, and involving them as substitutes to give them parts of a game, which we tend to do with a lot of them. So that's certainly in my thoughts."

If Bebe wasn't bought on a whim then we have a serious flaw with some of our scouting network......

God, you are brain dead

"Its pointless spending 40m on Modric to then see him feck off to the treatment room a month after signing him up." ... Is this how you perceive reality?

Wonder why?? We just lost to the worst team in the PL since Derby 08..

We need a DM but are there any available.. Now it can even be someone from this years UCL..
