Gaming No Man's Sky | 25th May New FREE Update: Leviathan

Feeling relieved I wasn't sucked into the hype of buying this game. Hopefully the people who are enjoying this game and were very excited aren't having the crashing issues on pc

It's a good game there's just a lot of ironing out to do and it doesn't do a good job of explaining how things work

Steam reviews are universally negative over the quality of the port. Not a great launch.
I got a refund. Will no doubt buy it further down the line after some updates and tweaks but for now was actually quite unplayable (despite substantially dropping settings on a solid gaming rig in a desperate attempt for it not to fecking lag).

To be fair though I kind of needed the £40 anyway so its poor performance has done me a favour . Will stick to having a run on my mate's PS4 for now.

It's a weird game. The way the game currently plays is like it's geared towards determined roleplayers and grind-junkies (though still fun for a normal sesh). Given the content of the updates they've promised soon (and the regular tweaks) it feels like an early access game with large parts still in development. I'm hesitant to be critical as I believe they've promised regular tweaks and large content updates all for free but this further backs my opinion that this was released too early.

I'm also very drunk so hopefully this makes sense.

I found an awesome planet today, full of snow and dinosaurs with lots of resources to collect. Think I'm going to spend a while here.

Hope they add a lot of new stuff to the game. Even simple missions would be great - meet alien, he's looking for something, go find that something. Can't help but think that if this idea landed with a bigger studio the content could be better.
Big dinosaurs? Wish there was an easier way of getting screenshots here, I had a 2001-esque planetary alignment on a moon earlier on.

Have finally flown the coop, don't think I'll be going back to my home system again :( Was quite attached. Last one I got to was a hellish shithole.

PC version is getting bombed for its performance issues.

Ah well. I suppose I'll save the money for the The Witcher 3 game of the year edition.

Well, it's made more sense than some sober posts I've seen!

Yea, as expected, it was never going to live up to the hype, not to mention, with the performance issues and what you've said, it's a case of taking on more than they could have. Probably needed more time but the hype train was already getting out of control.

Still loving it. It's a limited game, and it has some foibles, but the central premise just speaks to me. That, and the planets keep surprising me. Here's a video of a planet with torrential rains, and which is prone to storms:

Had quite a productive day. Found numerous gun upgrades and a better ship on a planet. It was probably the longest I've spent on one planet. The wildlife was amazing, there were flying fish and massive dinosaurs.

The game is at its best when you give yourself an objective to work towards. Today I went out with intention of finding a better gun which lead to me spending time upgrading a crashed ship and exploring.

The gameplay loop is a bit basic at the moment but is still enjoyable. When they add base building I think it'll add so much more to the game and give players a real reason to stay on planets longterm.

Is there an actual point to the game?
I am tempted but if it's just dotting around planets exploring maybe I should give it a miss

How much better was the ship? Still not found one with more than one extra slot to my own. Worth it if it's a design I prefer and I can be bothered to get everything fixed, but if it's possible to be patient and find one with a few more I'd prefer it.

It was a downgrade in one sense as it didn't have a warp drive, but I had just got the blueprint to build one. It had about 3 extra inventory slots. Id recommended upgrading when you can as it gives you something to do as you'll have to repair systems on the ship.

I hadn't found a single gun upgrade in the last few days, today I've found about 5, and each one has been an improvement over the last, so I blew loads of money.

Landed on a really unusual planet just there with giant dark Egyptian like rock formation everywhere. Not the most exciting game currently but it continues to amaze me.

I caved and got this yesterday on PC. Enjoying it so far although I am experiencing the performance issues folk speak of - seems to be a memory leak as after I have been playing about an hour the FPS starts to drop dramatically.

Anyway I have been working through the tutorial stuff, upgraded my ship to a 21-slot that I found and repaired, got a decent multitool with a ton of mining upgrades.

Quick question with the ship/multitool stuff - I have noticed the coloured borders around the modules, this implies that you will only get the benefit of the upgrade modules if they are 'connected' to the tool itself - is this the true?

Also had my first taste of space combat when I got jumped by three pirates and promptly got absolutely battered. I spawned back with my ship in the space station but aside from a bit of damage to certain modules, I am unable to tell if I have actually lost anything(?)

Having trouble marking flying creatures. I read you can shoot them down then scan them but I can't seem to kill them either

Yeah, you need to fly back to your "grave" marker in space. I have now died eight times, about seven of those being in space

On the multitool - the coloured borders I think mean that you get extra bonuses on top of the upgrade.

I stopped playing after I died in space, bit concerned now that my grave will have despawned!

Think it stays there until you die again or pick it up, so you should be okay.

I am glad that i haven't bought it, after watching gameplay and reviews. Apparently the PC port is really terrible and gameplay lacks any decent variety in its core gameplay loop. It looks like an interesting sandbox, so if they fix the technical issues and add enough content (+modding) they could still turn it around. I'll check it out in couple of month again.

So I've 'acquired' this recently.

First of all the PC port runs like shit on my relatively beefy rig so not off to a great start. But as I suspected the gameplay bored me to tears.

One thing I immediately noticed is this primary a survival game, and a pretty boring one at too. Honestly it just seems like all you do is mine the bejesus out of everything and anything, even for the privilege of continuing to mine :wenger:. And then when you mine enough to leave the planet, you go over to another to repeat the exact same feckin process!

The randomly generated creatures are an absolute joke too, all they've essentially done is designed various body parts and have the game randomly create an abomination out of them, all sharing the same poor animations. The planets are mostly rocks with terrain color changes and there's feck all to do in space bar trading with some weirdo.

The lack of multiplayer is pretty criminal too, I mean what's the point otherwise. Continue to mine your way to a fortune so you can trade with passive NPCs and upgrade your gear to do the exact same monotous routine with more efficiency?

Honestly this game for me is an absolute shambles and the devs complete frauds with the lies they've sold to us. Easily a bigger disappointment than Watch Dogs and Battlefront.

I honestly thought I'd feel the same way about this but I'm hooked even if the NPCs are rather shit. I have been to a fair few planets which have differed massively and had some great space battles which usually ends in my demise and losing some key belongings, I have also died again when trying to fly back and receive them from my floating grave site and this left me incredibly short on supplies and flying a wreck of a ship. It was quite exciting knowing I'd been truly fecked over and was in serious trouble as many items I needed to repair ship were not available to trade or mine from asteroids.
I also try to use my imagination a lot with this game and due to my incredibly w@nk internet speed in the South Africa I rarely ever play multiplayer games so I'm used to just AI (of course ranging from very decent to poor). I just set myself goals on this game as opposed to following the said path on each planet and naming everything which wears thin early on, I dont even care about the centre on the universe either. Just explore, survive and dog fight.
No doubt though it will have truly lost its current appeal by the time PES and FIFA come out but if I ever get anything over 30 hours game play from a title then its worth the money for me. I'm looking forward to see what additional content they might make before the end of the year or in 2017 as I'm sure I will go back to it then. Also I have read about a lot of PC issues, I have a PS4 and although limited graphics wise compared to a good gaming PC I have had no errors and the game hasn't crashed once either which I had heard was quite a regular occurrence. I'm gutted for many like you who have been left disappointed, I was also not hyped about this game and have not been following its progress since it was announced years back, so maybe this also helped me to enjoy it more and not be as let down as others.

What lies have the devs told? The lack of multiplayer can't be criminal, all the while the game has always been said to be single player. The only thing was that you're supposed to be able to actually stumble across another explorer, but that's something they're working on.

And it's all about mining? You don't seem to be a part of the demographic they're going for. It was pretty obvious that the main draw of the game was supposed to be exploration. Those who want to seek new vistas, and roam a large universe, have generally found the game to be engrossing. Anybody else was always going to struggle in seeing this game as anything but a waste of time once the initial novelty wears off. Then, of course, you have the Atlas plotline and the Polo and Nada plotline, the piecing together of the lore of the different species and the sentinels through monoliths, and some people just plain like grinding and upgrading, discovering all species on a planet, acquiring the different languages, etc. I mean, it's obviously a limited game, but it's not as limited as you make it out to be.

I really don't know what people were expecting from a team as small as Hello Games. I don't think I've ever seen a game have a bigger line of people who are eager to beat it with a stick, certainly not a game from an indie developer.

Me thinks @Eriku works for Hello Games, he's as defensive as weaste over PlayStation and ciderman and @Alock1 over xbox

I knew someone would run in here and play the bias card, rather than grappling with any points raised.

I really should learn to just shut up on the internet, people prefer to tackle the man and not the ball.

I was merely responding to a dude who said that he reckoned the game looked like it was going to bore him to tears, then said he might pick it up after it's been updated more, and then he picks it up and says "feck me, this is boring", and has a pop at it using AAA criteria.

 I was messing with you, but thanks for biting

Multiplayer would be a pretty big deal in a game like this considering its scale, and the devs have repeatedly said its going to be implemented, only to seemingly now block their ears and say "lalalala cant hear you" anytime someone brings it up now. That's essentially false marketing.

And trust me I'm all for exploration, I loved Journey, ICO, Shadow of the Collosus and spent hours just sailing in The Wind Waker, but this completely pales in comparison. Doesn't help that the graphics and artwork are a little shit, and really all I can think about in this is "oh shit, better mine more plutonium".

The funny thing is NMS isn't even unique. There's a game was that was made available for early access and is still in alpha stages called Empyrion Galactic Survival. The game is still in development and is half the cost, and yet does pretty much everything NMS does but better - and it has multiplayer and proper base building.

Edit: I should probably caveat that I'm not trying to be a dick, just venting my frustrations at another game I was excited for just to be hugely let down - a recent trend for me in the industry. If you're having a blast then all power to you.

Having a terrible PC port, when your game costs 60$ is inexcusable. Releasing an extremely buggy game for this price without any warning is fraud. Additionally their line about multilayer was deliberately misleading. It is a single player game and they should have said so. A full-priced title is also not a work in progress; it doesn´t matter what they add in the future. So yeah, they deserve all the shit they get.

When it comes to the game itself I probably agree with you. The devs delivered what they promised. They were specific about the universe and it seems to be indeed quite beautiful. They were extremely vague when it came to mechanics and that is usually a sign that mechanics are rather basic.

The game was hopelessly over-hyped, but that wasn´t just the fault of the devs. They just used this hype to run a very successful marketing campaign.

It is great if you enjoy the game and there is nothing wrong with this and nobody should attack you because of it. At the same time you should understand anyone who is disappointed. Most of the criticism is quite justified.

So apparently the crahed ship and multi tool slots depend on your current equipment slots. Good thing i didnt waste a few hours trying to find a crashed ship with high inventory. I totally did that.

Multi tool goes up one each time you find a pod. The crashed ships are either 1 slot higher or 1 slot lower

Playing this game stoned is bloody great, especially when you get moments like the one at the end of this video, wandering about this great planet and then I glimpse something truly odd, I was in fecking stitches at this thing.

No need for a caveat, you don't come across as a dick, I'm just confused as to what more you really expected, and was lead to expect by the developers. Calling them frauds would have to entail more than the multiplayer. Also, if you check Murray's tweets since the two players and others have failed to spot each other, you'll see that he's still insisting that it's supposed to be possible, just not currently working. I'd expect that to be up soon enough, but I doubt it will add a lot to the experience just by adding that, so I don't see what's so grievous about it.

I suppose though that if you put the time into it, you can gradually upgrade one-by-one rather than spend the many millions on one from a station. I've got a 25er at the moment, upgrading to anything over 30 costs close to 10m. A system with five planets in could get you there for nothing.

Hope they add ship-designing/customisation later on.

I'm putting the game on the side until I get weed or hash.
