Gaming Nintendo Switch

I'm interested in buying one and not really sure
Today, a 3DS. Cheaper and an amazing selection of games. In a year you might want a switch though. I have a 3ds and it has made me happy for about 5 years.

The additional accounts and region free setup on this is magnificent, just added a Japanese account to download demos of Puyo Puyo Tetris and Dragon Quest Heroes.

Any of you guys struggling with the "dead pixels" as being reported by the BBC and others? Wonder whether this is much of an issue for users?

Personally, havent seen any. Although, the left joycon seems to be a little temperamental.

Splatoon 2 global testfire is available in Japan. Keep your eyes peeled as you'll be able to play the game online for free at set limited times (if it's anything like the wiiu testfire they did last time). Will be a good taster for people that didn't play the original.

If Nintendo pay as much attention to Switch as they did to DS and 3DS, in 2-3 years the game selection will be incredible. It will also draw attention of third party developers as the customer base will grow.

It'll have more attention, now that it's both their handheld and console in one, surely?

Yeah I guess so too. I think they will drop or significantly reduce 3DS support now, it already has a good library of games and has been around for 6 years so the cycle is about over.

Once Mario, Pokemon, Fire Emblem games start rolling out for Switch it will be a game changer. It's extremely capable and comfortable to use as a handheld.

Yeah, once the upcoming 3DS games are out, that will most likely be it for the most part I imagine.

It's good to hear that it's comfortable. Can't wait to get my hands on one

Probably - the only real distraction would be the mobile stuff but that should be less than the WiFi U, though I'm not sure third parties will put the same efforts in until wide adoption. It may be a ps2/ps3 situation where devs opted for the larger playerbase for some time.

Yeah, also I'm getting longer battery life than people think, all I've done is turn the screen brightness off automatic and down slightly and it lasted over 4hrs on Zelda test. I don't get how people can moan at that.

I think that can be increased too, if they introduce an option to stop the machine itself charging the joy cons in portable mode.

I'm very happy with the Switch so far, it's fantastic. Just need the games to come in now.

Yeah, and the size is perfect for me. People argued it's too big but these days we are used to carrying 5-inch mobile phones and tablets so it's definitely not too much, and the big screen means you actually know what is happening and play full blown titles rather than dumbed down versions.

I think it'll also be key for them to get third party support but not nearly as key as it was for Wii U (which eventually killed it IMO). PS4 and Xbox One are at a price point where a lot of people can afford both them and the Switch, and people will usually prefer to play COD, Mass Effect etc. on the more powerful system. Due to its portable nature and the ability to play multiplayer on the go I think it's key that they will get sports games coming in. Full NBA 2K has already been announced (which is absolutely huge for me, I easily play 300-400 hours of it) and EA have said they are developing FIFA game that will make best use of Switch - I just hope it won't be like with PS Vita where they released a good title but never bothered to improve it and only updated squads in each of the next one. They don't need Rockstar games etc., we can play them on the other two and it will be more than compensated by multiple Nintendo exclusives which are usually great.

Fingers crossed for it. It really is a great concept, very well made and has had a good start with a truly amazing launch title.

Defending it from what?
It's not exactly getting stellar reviews, is it? General consensus is that it's not a good home console compared to the cheaper PS4 or XBONE, and a very cumbersome portable one. I would be tempted to go get one, but €350 for something that seems like neither a great home console or portable console seems a bit nuts to me. And I love Nintendo.

Who knows, maybe I will get one eventually, but Nintendo really need to get developers making games for it.

Googling it shows up a lot of positive reviews, not negative. I'm not sure where you are reading the bad things, got some links so I can see out of interest?

If you are talking about a few scratch and crash videos, well all I can say is I've not had a single problem with any of that, I have had the left joycon de-sync once, but the game paused and you just click a button again to continue. I can see how the scratch screen does happen though, if you aren't careful, as it surprised me that the inside of the dock is plastic and not rubber or something. However I've used it a lot and my kids have too, and so far so good.

I don't care about defending it as such, people can do what they want with their money, I'm just talking from experience. It's an excellent device, a few niggles sure (what launch machine doesn't have that?) and I do think it's a bit over priced, well for the dock quality anyway, but the machine itself is fantastically made, powerful and I've had no sign of trouble.

Also it's brilliant in portable mode, again, I've no idea why people would say it's not at least decent? All I've seen is a few half arsed comments about battery, is there something I'm missing?

Overall, if you are on the fence then I'd say wait a few months and see what the gaming situation is like. Of course, if you have the cash spare and no Wii-U, Zelda is worth the inital purchase alone, it really is, but it needs backing up long term obviously. Any specific questions to help you decide let me know and I'll answer them honestly. Again, game situation is the only sticking point for me, but that will come with time. I'm honestly more concerned with games not coming for the Psvr than this, especially since it's taking over from the 3ds too.

Maybe I didn't see enough reviews, to be fair, but you are painting a better picture than I'd suspected. Anyway it'll be a while before I think about picking one up, so many good games coming thick and fast right now that I'll probably wait and see if the price drops and what games are announced, first.

To be honest, it is better than I expected. Numerous times in this thread I was thinking about cancelling my preorder, then right at the end I forgot I even still had it on

I'm glad I didn't though. Honestly, I'm enjoying it and really didn't think I'd use the handheld mode as much as I do.

Stop it now, my wallet is giving me dirty looks.

Seriously though, wait for games if you aren't that bothered about Zelda right away. By the end of the year we'll have much more to go on and it'll become well worth it then.

Though, of course, any gamer should be bothered by Zelda. It's an absolutely immense game.

So would you recommend picking up a Wii U in the meantime? I haven't purchased a Nintendo console in many many years but really want to try the new Zelda out. Possibly other Nintendo games too, as the PS4 has become a bit stale for me right now. I think The Witcher 3 completely banished my ability to enjoy other games..

Anyone going to get Lego City (out on the 7th April)? I was wanting to play it on the the Wii U at some point, but there's no reason to get that now, so I'll get the Switch version instead.

It really does depend. The Switch is superior in every way and is getting the best Wii-U games or sequels to them anyway.

I mean the Wii-U is cheap at the moment, but the games still aren't. If you have the money and a PS4 to help tide you over, go Switch for Zelda. If you really can wait and fancy playing a small back catalogue, then the Wii-U is still a decent console. Add to that it does play Wii games rather well too.

To be honest though, the Switch is a great piece of kit, it's actually surprised me how much I like it.

Yes, I am. I haven't played Lego City, I kept meaning to, so this is the perfect chance. I've only got Zelda on cart at the moment (I've got Shovel knight, fastRMX and Blaster Master Zero already on download), so it'll be nice to have another actual physical game

I hope Shovel Knight gets a physical release like it did for the Wii U/3DS/PS4, that's another one I've been wanting to play for a while.

Thanks for the advise man, and good point about the games still being fairly pricey. I certainly have money to burn so think I'll just end up going with the Switch, but it really is going to be a stab in the dark for me. I just feel like I need some kind of gaming alternative to the PS4, that isn't an Xbox One. The new Zelda really does look incredible.

It's definitely going to be worth it as an alternative system, for sure. It's unique and totally different to the PS4/Xbone, and when the 3DS side fully comes over, it really will be the best of both worlds.

BTW guys, Splatoon testfire in 15mins! I wonder if the servers will hold up

I've hopefully prevented the dock scratching my screen. I remembered about a roll of this stuff that we've had lying around, so I cut a couple of small strips and stuck them onto the plastic ridges inside the dock, so now there's it's a soft surface against the screen when it's slid in.

Yeah, I used something similar.

Btw you really should get in on the Splatoon 2 testfire today, it's a great chance to try the game, and don't stress, it's really easy just to jump in and play!

I might also buy another pair of joycons rather than a controller. I really like using them one in each hand (especially great for Zelda aiming and gyroscope puzzles, and Splatoon 2), plus that means 4 player Mario Kart

Yeah I might give it a look. What is it anyway? A multi-player only beta?

Yeah, a 4v4 battle. But again, I cannot stress enough, it's not one of those games where people master it by playing over and over. It's so very well balanced, my six year old was playing the beta last night and won more games than he lost  Plus there's no annoying voice chat or any of that, no comments, you don't even have to shoot other people, you just paint and have a laugh.
