Gaming Nintendo Switch

Who am I kidding, this is mine in maximum 4 weeks so I may as well buy it now.

Obviously there's not much to test yet, but so far the machine feels very well built and the UI is sharp as a tack. Also the tv to handheld thing works awesome.

BTW re: battery times, a couple of reviews said about playing the handheld mode whilst charging probably wouldn't be enough to keep up with Zelda, they are wrong. This thing charges quickly. Also the screen light is pretty powerful, so turning that down not only makes the game look better but should extend life.

Also, considering the power this thing has graphically-wise, I'm guessing 2.5-5 hours of play is actually pretty good. Zelda is the sharp end power-wise, but most other games won't stretch it anywhere near as much, so as a portable I'm confident this thing is going to work fine.

Zelda is superb

But being so used to ps4 controller I am constantly pressing wrong buttons

The console has no apps....at all? It's like consoles were before there were menu's. It may has well go right to the game.

Turns out I ordered a charging dock for the controller back in January, so that, a screen protector and a pro controller all arriving Monday

The joycon grip thing is horrible, pro controller all the way for me

Just downloaded snipperclips demo now I want the game

Got mine. Thought I received a empty box when I got it as the package was so light.

Sadly my pro controller for some odd reason didn't arrive today and is coming tomorrow.

Loving it so far - the docking and going from playing on the TV to handheld mode, whilst the wife watches TV is game-changing.

And Zelda is amazing - the footage doesn't go it justice...it's more about the feel and little touches.

OK I bought this. Picking this up tomorrow at 12 with Zelda, they are taking my Wii U with games (only have Mario Bros, Just Dance and Mario Kart) and I have to add €110 which is great deal. Wii U has been purely a Mario Kart machine for me and my fiance and Switch will also have Mario Kart soon.

Cannot believe the awesome stuff I have been getting these past few days. New car yesterday, new console tomorrow and it's not even Christmas time.

Rich bastard!

But hey, I have a beautiful girlfriend to play Mario Kart with too, who is almost as big a gamer as I am (and a fair bit younger too) so I can't be too jealous ;) I'm never selling my Wii-U though! That makes you a philistine!

I don't really like to keep that stuff around. I will probably buy another one a couple of years down the line and will get the amazing feeling of getting a new piece of technology again as a bonus. It was my second Wii U anyway, sold the previous one too.

As I said, timing is very convenient. I am on a spending spree anyway and just got a bonus at work so need to spend some of it  Still did not feel like spending full price hence the trade.

A couple of questions: is there a charger for the tablet in there, one I could carry with me when I travel? Is there an HDMI cable in the set? I know Nintendo are quite cheap with these, and never give you a charger, hence questions.

I am going for all black/grey one. I don't like the colorful one.

The charger is the same one for both the console and the dock. It's a standard adapter, so no problems taking it with you. And yes, there's a HDMI cable.

I went for black/grey too. I liked the look of the colourful ones in early pics, but we have a lot of geeky things on display (like my new Master Sword statue that came with special edition Zelda which is surprisingly good quality for one of these things), but when I saw them in person even I thought they were a little too tacky.

It's a proper nice looking unit to be fair, far better than the other consoles I have currently hooked up. I mean the PS4 Pro looks like a council block from any Sci-f film!

Thanks! Yeah, I feel like the colors are just a bit too much.

The more I think about the line up, the less I care really. Zelda is the only worthwhile launch game but it's a top one by all accounts and will probably take 50+ hours to properly finish anyway, at which point Mario Kart will come out. Then another couple of months and we will have Splatoon, and after another month or two a proper NBA 2K game which I could take with me anywhere at which point I'm going to lose it. Then at Christmas an open world Mario game. That's plenty enough. PS4 had more games but none of them rated anywhere near Zelda.

Obviously long term the lack of multiplatform games will hurt them and it could never work for me as the only home console but since I already own PS4 and Xbox One, as the third one it offers exactly what the third console at home should - original games and something unique (portability). Seems like Nintendo do not even want to compete for the share of market that Sony and Microsoft own anymore.

Is it me or is this oddly priced? £280 whilst seems cheap, you can get an Xbox one or PS4 around £230 or cheaper. I know Nintendo aren't directly competing with Microsoft and Sony but I'm just looking at where it fits in the market. I thought it could be price skimming, but even then I doubt the console will go lower than £230.

Is the console any good? I read that the screen can get scratched whilst placing it into the dock.

For a start you are comparing launch price to systems that have been discounted over a few years.

On the screen scratching, there have also been reports of people snapping the side controller. Those people are quite simply daft and not paying attention to what they are doing.

Apologises, I know the PS4 and Xbox one both come out around £400 mark. I think the PS4 was around £350. It just seems like Nintendo haven't given much leeway to themselves, I think it'll stick around that £250 price for a while. It's just interesting, I think they could have marked up to £330 odd and brought the price down slowly by skimming. I for one am interested in the switch, but I'm not sure I'd buy one just yet.

Yeah it is pretty pricey compared to something like a shield tablet tbf. Obviously the controllers and r&d costs and all that are factored in too, so the cost is a little more understandable.

If anything, if you are on the fence, wait to see more games announced. Zelda is an amazing game it has to be said, but it needs support and sharpish.

 at the thread title. I am now coming back home with a new Switch.

So far so good. About an hour into Zelda and Im really enjoying it. Console itself is beautiful.

The modmin who changed the title is just jealous. Congrats!

I'd say it's wrong to knock a lemming's will power. Imagine the amount of conviction you need to have to go through with jumping off a cliff, despite knowing the outcome of doing so.

I've never played any Zelda games, but this has drawn me in. It looks like a game I'd enjoy. I'll wait and see what games are announced, I'm currently an Xbox one gamer, and if any games were coming to the XB1 and Switch I'd buy them on the XB1. But if any Pokémon game comes to the switch, I swear I'll buy one without hesitation:lol:

Bought one of these yesterday. Just walked into HMV, asked if they had any spare and they did.

Very nice bit of kit. Easy to set up. It's tiny under my tv!

Love it. First Nintendo I have bought since the N64.

I love it! So well made and the moment you exit the cave in Zelda makes it worth it alone.

Apologies if this has been asked before, but do people think the Switch could potentially be a replacement for the 3DS?

Yes.

Guess it helps the console doesn't have any bloat yet?

Nah, it's more a save state. But it is still impressive none-the-less. The overall UI is super quick and clean though, far superior to the sluggish Wii-U, very impressive even if it's not finished.

Okay, I'm getting this as soon as they pull their finger out with virtual console. Hopefully no later than the summer!

Anyone who has both consoles, would you recommend the switch or a 3DS if you had to chose one?

I'm interested in buying one and not really sure

Well both are excellent, though obviously the Switch has very few games to start with. For the price of that and Zelda, you can get a 3ds with a lot of the classic great games on it.

The switch is the future though. But if you need to pick one now and get the other down the line, I'd say 3ds with a few of it's best games.
