Nigel De Jong

Hardly an improvement on our players, He isn't better than Carrick or Herrera and maybe even Fellaini. What's the point in spending £8million on a 3/4th choice midfielder who won't drastically improve us. Says a lot ambition if we end up signing him when there is players like Vidal out there.

Most of the people here backing the transfer of De Jong probably has the Vidal's Knee complication in mind.

Even if we were to pass on Vidal because of his knee, there is still better players out there than De Jong, But apparently big name midfielders can't play in Van Gaals system or something like that........

Oh my god why don't you calm yourself down.

I didn't say they weren't good additions, or good players, I said they weren't big signings for one of the biggest clubs in the world. Why don't you "feck off" and stop being jumpy. They aren't the kind of signings that cause hype, or sell shirts. They're just good players that improve the team.

Just because a player isn't a "big signing" doesn't mean they aren't good players, or that they won't significantly improve you. I agree that Van Gaal will sign the players suited to the system rather than make big name acquisitions which is a good thing.
Why even go down the path of sniffily describing Herrera and Shaw as not big signings? Who the hell thinks that way about players except muppets?

He's right, Herrera and Shaw were expensive signings, but for me they were not "big signings". This is opinion based though so there is no right or wrong.

I think with a rebuild, a long term fix is what is required.

Clearly you are attempting to live up to your tagline with this post.
I'd quite like United to finish in the top 4 this season., and any signings that get us there are good ones. If you want to get your knickers in a twist over the signings not being for enough money and not being sexy enough then grow up. United can't buy at the top table unless they're back in the CL again.

:wenger:

I'm not even a United fan so I couldn't give a feck whether you sign big players or not. I'm hardly going to be a muppet over what players you bring in. I just saw them branded "big signings" and thought it was odd, as for me they don't belong in that category and that's why for me you could still sign a player in that kind of class i.e. a Vidal, hence why I made the post.

The point of that guys post seemed to be that you've already brought in the major, big name players and thus won't be bringing in another, which I disagree with. Are we clear now? I am not making a dig at United so you can put your claws away.

This feels like the Vermaelen pursuit IMO. Yes he would improve us, yes he would be available for fairly cheap but he is a backup option if Vidal doesn't go through and LVG wants to wait for Strootman. I would much rather we start the season with De Jong than Fellaini. He wouldn't "fix" our midfield issues but he sure would solve a few problems, most notably helping get rid of Fellaini and Anderson.

Maybe he can do a job at wingback as well. The most important thing here is that LVG knows and trusts him, and I trust our manager.

They were definitely 'big signings' - mandatory signings, if you will. We needed a LB as Evra has been on the decline for a few years, and we now have one of the biggest talents in England to play there for the next 10 years, and Ander is logically huge; a player with mobility, technical ability, the talent to transition defence into attack and play under pressure, something that has been barren in our midfield. I'm not sure how they aren't 'big' for you.

Well that's BS, We missed out on loads of players even when we could pretty much guarantee champions league football. CL is obviously not as big of a factor when up against financial gains.

Geez! What is wrong with people in here? I am not talking about money or sexy..... I want to see investment. I want players that are here for the long stay, the sort of thing that made us successful years ago. I want to see talent nurtured and shaped in the United way. That's what I mean by investment.

I don't care if we sign a total unknown for £100m, so long as he does what we need for the team and does it for many years to come. Bringing De Jong back to Manchester for a couple of years or so, is a total waste of time for me.

Let's get investing in this team, in a way promised by our verbose CEO.

For that sort of money it's a no-brainer, most of my City supporting mates were gutted to see him go.

If he comes in I would imagine it would be as a stop gap until the Strootman turns up.

Pure toilet.

And one of the most annoying suggestions that floats around here in and in cheap journalism.

Would be an excellent squad player. It's not like Carrick isn't a great player, so I wouldn't be too broken up if we didn't sign Vidal.

Young--Carrick--Herrera--Shaw
------------Mata-------------
------Van Persie--Rooney-----

Not exactly a poor midfield and attack is it? Valencia and Rafael backup for Young, Fletcher and De Jong back up for Carrick, Cleverley and Lingard/Powell backup for Herrera, Kagawa and Powell/Lingard backup for Mata, Welbeck and Wilson backup for Van Persie, Januzaj and Zaha backup for Rooney.

They were big signings for the squad and in terms of their role in the side but they weren't star signings that would mean you were done with your big business this season. That's what I mean, not that they aren't good signings. They are very practical ones in fact that both improve you in two key areas.

Do you honestly believe that Strootman will just turn up? Roma will not be interested in doing business unless we pay stupid money for him and even then, not until next summer.

So you would be perfectly fine if De Jong was an unknown early 20 something and we bought him for whatever price, right?

If Van Gaal gets De Jong, and he does well and helps us have a great season, then you can tell us all how pissed off you are that he's just wasting our time.
Not that anyone gives a feck what a muppet thinks when it comes to real life.

Yes I do, I think this transfer will happen if he makes a full recovery, Jan or next summer, that's why I'm saying De Jong would be a stop gap, and a good one at that.

Louis Van Gaal, July 2014, When I buy, I buy players for the long term, not the short term "

If he is the man I think he is, this is just newspapers trying to guess their way to a story.

Then, what about McCarthy as an alternative? Obviously won't really improve our quality much, but is young and could play either cm role well. Carrick and Herrera are good enough to be first choice imo.

Wow what a hypocrite, how can you tell someone to support another team, just because he would rather get a better player in for big money? And secondly he's not a good player.

Why don't you go and support Stoke or West ham?, they love a £8million signing. Goes both ways.

If you think I'm actually suggesting he really packsup and moves to Madrid then I'm struggling to help you.

You're entitled to your opinion. If Van Gaal does sign him then it seems he disagrees about whether he's any good. It's fair to assume he disagrees anyway - given that he picked him in his World Cup side. I'd trust his opinion over yours so I'm happy enough if he comes in.

I personally think a player with a lot of caps for a top international side and plenty of CL experience must be doing something right, but what do I know?

I tend to judge players on ability and experience - not what they cost. The fee quoted is nothing and represents little to no risk.

Strootman will be for the long term.

OMG. I am not explaining myself again.

You don't have to.

For me it's about building a squad, and players like this improve the squad.

I'd be more than happy with the club buying top drawer talent. Hopefully the do, but that doesn't mean we only go after those kind of players.

There are little evident drawbacks if this comes off. Low fee, player known to the boss and can fit the system, improves our options (and potentially the first team) and has PL experience. I don't see the problem.

I agree that we need players for the long term - but we also need players for the now. Young, potential superstars are great if and when you can get them in, where we are now we might have a disadvantage with no CL football.

Frankly he's better, in my opinion than Cleverley and more reliable than Fletcher. There's a place for him as it stands.

This is the De Jong thread.

Feck me you're hard work, IF Van Gaal really want's Strootman and is prepared to wait for him to make a full recovery, then it makes perfect sense to sign a player like De Jong as a stop gap.

Is that ok for you?

I would be more excited about McCarthy as an investment than De Jong. A decent young lad, but he would cost way more than he is worth, Fellaini-style. As I have said previously in another thread, we would end up paying for Lukaku.

Like park before him, an unglamorous player who would be highly effective in certain situations doing a specific job. Bring him in

For sure he is, but I want to see us aiming higher. Why shouldn't we, Woodward reckons money is no issue.

He will probably do a job for £8m but I don't like the idea of signing a stop gap. Obviously LvG wants Strootman but Roma wont sell cheap (if at all), we'll probably end up spending more on Strootman than what Vidal will cost at the moment.

Renewed interest could just be a way of panicking Juve (who need cash), & reducing price on Vidal.
