Nigel De Jong

I think people underestimate just how important it is to have a good solid midfielder who will do the dirty work like De Jong. Someone like him is invaluable to a side and makes the whole team knit together a lot better. He's not a world beater but he is very good at the role he does and he would walk into our side right now.
Especially with Van Gaal's ''pivot that points backwards'', you'd expect the defensive midfielder in that situation to possess a strong defensive game which De Jong does . I don't know what people are getting worked up over, we know that Van Gaal likes a strong DM next to a box to box midfielder and that he has always used one throughout his career, De Jong is available, has worked with him before, relatively cheap and would walk into our side with his eyes closed . Who could be more expedient than him ? And with a promising youngster like Pearson being a couple of years from being ready De Jong's age allows for a smooth transition should the youngster kick on as we hope he will. I am all for this signing.

£8 million according to the Express. Would be a great signing at that price. Especially if we are still after Vidal.

If this is the best we can do this summer we would be better off not buying another midfielder this summer.

Please no. I would rather give one of the young players a chance. Thankfully express are not reliable and is most likely non sense.

Disagree. De Jong would be a great option for us at this price. Would be a consolation prize but still worth getting.

There's a part of me that would love to get him even if we got Vidal. De Jong behind Herrera and Vidal would be pretty sweet IMO.

I'm happy with this if we can't get Vidal. Would add the steel we require in the middle. Then the Stroot next year!

Don't mind the idea of signing De Jong as a stop gap if we absolutely have to or as one of two CM signings. That said, I hate the notion of a player just adding "steel" to our midfield. It offers a terrible flashback to last year's Fellaini thread. I want actual quality in midfield...

What young player do we have that is a good DM?
Ben Pearson. Rothwell is a talented centre midfielder too, both could add to our midfield at the moment and I'd be surprised if either aren't given a chance this year.

I don't want to turn this into a youth promotion vs new signing debate, so I won't add anything else or make any further replies.

He is quality. Quality at what he does. He would allow other players to do their thing.

Van Gaal talked a lot about our squad lacking balance. For me De Jong would go some way towards rebalancing it. When you have too many number 10s, what would be useful to offset that? Someone who sits and breaks things up, has no aspirations to get forward and lets the 10s do their thing.

Again, not my dream signing but one I think would improve us, and by quite a bit.

Bet Arsenal fans wish they had 'steel' but thats non of my business. Fellaini and De Jong are nothing alike.

Van Gaal already said he does not believe in short-term solutions , which thankfully rules out this one.

I think a midfield 3 of Carrick-De Jong-Herrera would be a solid midfield, with bite and good ball retention, although it'll still pose the problem of lack of goals from midfield (although Herrera contributes more than any of our other recent midfielders)

How do you do that with the 3-5-2 system? You'd be giving up Mata or one of the 2 strikers.

For £8m he'd be a great addition & if we did get him it doesn't mean he has to be first choice & play every week. He'd be a good option & that has been something we've moaned about not having for years in midfield.

"We are willing to invest. There is no fixed budget. Financially we are extremely strong and funds are available. Louis is assessing what’s going on and there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes, so watch this space."

Yep I could see us splashing the cash, and spending £8m.

What's your problem?

How about we start looking at the player rather than the price tag?

You want impressive price tags? PSG bought Luiz for 50m and Liverpool bought Carroll for 35m.

Pretty much sums up everything. I would be a lot more happier going to City or Chelsea with De Jong than Cleverley in the team. He is a far better player and at least you know we wouldn't get bullied. A great price to boot also.

No thanks. Goes against what van gaal said anyway.

Our blockbuster signing this august.

Woodward will have done well to stop him from going to Spain.

Actually think he could do a job for us, I thought City missed him badly the year after they let him go so easily, reliable and solid, I mean obviously Vidal & Strootman are more jizz worthy names, but both have serious knee concerns lingering just now, don't understand the hate on this one if it were to happen.
