Nigel De Jong

He's a decent player but he isn't going to get us back to the top, simple as that. We should be aiming a lot higher and I'd be very disappointed if he ended up being our next midfield singing.

prepare for disappointment big boy. We've done our big signings for the summer, and anything now will be cheaper squad stuff. De Jong, Blind, Vermaelen types.

You need good squad players when you're at the top. De Jong isn't going to be the player Van Gaal builds the team around.

Yes, because our midfield options are so strong? He's better than Clev, Ando and Fellaini. So, by default, he would be our current 3rd best midfield option. More than a squad player eh.

We would end up signing a lot of midfielders if the only criteria is to be better than those 3.

Not really the point at all. De Jong has worked with LvG, has vast PL experience, would be available relatively cheap and would most likely want to come. Why not sign him?

We badly need some midfield options and I would happily take him. I would still hope for a bigger midfield signing, too. But he would be a good addition to the squad.

Why not sign Gareth Barry? He is even cheaper than De Jong(free), tons of PL experience, kept de Jong on the bench when he was at City, could be a stop gap. So why not him? I am not saying we should sign Gareth Barry but, all the reasons people are using to justify the De Jong signing you could make for Gareth Barry.

Edit just realized that Barry has already signed for Everton

Well Barry has clearly signed for Everton. I don't see your point at all, for what it's worth.

You should go and support Real Madrid if you want every player to be a star name.

Fact is, individual players rarely get you to the top, you need a team and a suitable and successful system.

Everyone on here agrees that we need to improve our midfield. Signing Herrera was a great start but we need more than that. I already thought that we needed another two in there but we need that even more so now that Carrick is injured. We need the depth as well as the quality.

We're not going to be able to get two more big money signings so adding a cheap option like De Jong to (hopefully) someone like Vidal would be great business.

De Jong isn't the worst option, but not the best either. If we signed him, I would have it in my mind that it would just be as a stand-in until the Stroot is fit.

I don't think he'd be enough. With Arsenal, Chelsea and City all making strong improvements, we really have to do the same to be even able to contend.

It would certainly have to be De Jong + 1. Hopefully we can pull of a brilliant midfield signing but I won't hold my breath. De Jong would, by default, be our 3rd best midfielder and him along with another midfielder, on a better level, would be good business.

What strong improvements have City made? We've hopefully already made one strong improvement with our manager.

I think people underestimate just how important it is to have a good solid midfielder who will do the dirty work like De Jong. Someone like him is invaluable to a side and makes the whole team knit together a lot better. He's not a world beater but he is very good at the role he does and he would walk into our side right now.

Completely agree.

We'll probably get him in January. De Jong or a stop gap for now, who will then become a back-up thereafter.

Would still be ahead of Fellaini, Clev and Ando. So he would be 3rd / 4th choice, which would mean he would still see enough action.

That's of course, if we get Strootman.

Spot on!

A Gatusso type of player does wonders for team balance.

Yeah. Slap a nice beard on the cnut and make him change his name to "Gatusso" and I'll welcome him with open arms.

Can't stand De Jong - he really, really rubs me the wrong way.

De Jong, Vermaelen and Blind would be our business done for the summer I'd say. less than 30m more spent. We won't have a midfield to compete with the big boys, but maybe it was never LVGs plan to build that midfield in one summer

Why not? If you know you are weak in an area you get it sorted when you can, summer transfer window is here, now is the time to do it.

That would be quite good business actually - I'd really love De Jong here at least.

He would only be needed for about 4-5 games. He would be next to useless against the bottom half teams due to his limited style.

Against the likes of City, Chelsea etc he would be fantastic as he covers ground, breaks play up and keeps it simple. He is also very effective at keeping AM's quiet but against West Ham & Sunderland etc where you need someone to pick a pass, beat a man or be creative then he can't really do that.

He is excellent at organizing and instigating the pressing, you need that against all the team on earth, the level of the opposition doesn't change that.
You need to retake quickly the possession against every team.

Very definitive statement! Must mean youre an ITK then?

I'd say the window is open for a long time yet, the club are being very guarded & i suspect there will be another 3 players coming in. Rather than your post that makes out like youve spoken to Van Gaal & he's told you our transfer plans!

In a midfield three he'd have Herrera beside him and one of Mata/Kagawa playing further forward. There's plenty of creativity there.

It'd be the most sh!T ITK ever wouldn't it. Quite an uninspired list. Let's hope I'm wrong, and Vidal, Di Maria, Hummels and Pele are coming in
