For the record I think rojo has been pretty good thus far and not this crazy sod who everyone paints him to be because, i dunno, tattoos?

Rojo makes 1 nutter error per game fairly often (60 percent of the time, it works everytime). He lets it bounce or makes a bad pass or creates some sort of breakdown. That's where the rep for craziness is from. Jones has a bit of that in him, Smalling less.

LVG preferred to bring in Rojo and partner him with Jones for most of the season when they are available

Otamendi is more calm and calculated than Jones or Rojo is, but I do understand the point thats being made. There are times when he dives in. He doesn't have the calm of a Rio or Hummels

But here's the thing. Yes we know LVG prefers a left footed CB as well as a right footed one, but he's also shown that he prefers 2 athletes that arent our best out and out defenders, like Jones and Rojo. So either we believe LVG will follow through with his preference - a left footer and a right footer, CBs in the model of Rojo and Jones who are athletic but prone to lapses in concentration, overplaying, etc. Or we believe that he's going to change his mind, in which case he could go in any direction

It doesnt make sense to suggest that he'll definitely want another left footed CB, but it'll be one completely different to the CBs he's shown a preference for. Either we're following his lead or we aren't with speculation, theres no half measures

Well Rojo was only brought in because we couldn't get Vermalen, which is a whole can of worms in it's own right.

I am basing my view off what he has said since he got here regarding the right footer and left footer stuff, but he does seems to prefer Jones to Smalling which I find utterly bizarre, as Smalling has just as much pace and athleticism but also is much less prone to rash errors. .

No, not his tats, the fact he tends to rush in and lets the ball go over him and the fact he actually put himself on the shelf by racing out to the halfway line to make a sliding tackle and damaged his shoulder.

Eh I think it's over played. New defender in a new league makes the odd mistake... It's gonna happen. What do people expect. Apparently he's then and now tarred with some kind of ongoing crazy streak. I think he's been pretty good this season for a new defender

That's just the Telegraph transfer gossip page. They haven't named the source - probably the Star - like these pages usually do, though.

If people don't want to click the link, Spanish newspaper Deporte Valenciano. We're paying the buyout clause, Atletico are also sniffing around. One of the problems will be that if Valencia make the CL he won't want to leave.

Graham Hunter expects Manchester United to attempt to buy Nicolas Otamendi from Valencia this summer, but insists it would make more sense for the La Liga side to resist cashing in on their Argentine defender.

The Spanish football expert told Sky Sports: "Manchester United's interest in aquiring Otamendi is well established. Therefore, I would expect them to try to buy him in the summer.

And Hunter admits that if Valencia do not qualify for the Champions League, they are far less likely to keep star players as the bigger European sides come sniffing.

He added: "Of course if they don't get to the Champions League, then you could say everybody is for sale.

"If Valencia finish fifth, then their financial situation is such that big clubs will be able to pick off their best players."

I'm guessing this guy might be our backup if we fail to sign Hummels.

I've just read the article, the guy is suggesting that Valencia will consider a 50M offer, but doesn't he have a ~30M release clause? Sounds like a bullshit article.

He's a bullshitter, about as reliable as Balague.

I love how Balague's column goes missing all summer and then he re-appears! Hunter also reckons Isco will be dropped for the returning James this week......I just don't believe that.

If we bid 50m for a CB I might stop watching football.

That sounds exactly like the worst decision we could ever make

I disagree, if we had spent a ton on someone like Vermaelen then yes, that would have been a terrible decision.
T Silva would be solid business for us....I dont think he would come I am just saying he would be great for our backline.

€50m is £36m. we've already spent £30m on a 19 year old left back with barely any experience. Otamendi is a more seasoned professional than that.

like someone else said, i think he's a backup choice to Hummels anyway. seems like the other muppet candidates aren't available (Varane, etc). if Hummels isn't available, then this guy would be a good second choice.

It wouldn't be outrageous to spend £36m on a top class center half who could be a mainstay of our defence for the best part of next decade. Otamendi will be 27 soon so he could easily have 5-6 years left at the top.

He's 30 years old

It would be a terrible idea to pay 50 million euros for a 30 year old Maldini or Rio Ferdinand, let alone Thiago Silva. Ridiculous

i agree. in today's market, it's about the going rate anyway

It's absolutely essential that he keeps the beard if he's to move here though:

I know well which defender I'd be afraid more if I were a striker, eh?

The hell is he talking about? I wish this clown could atleast put some effort into a little research before writing articles.

We paid £30m for a CB 13 years ago and that worked out pretty well.

Transfer fees generally have exploded since then, €50m sounds like a ridiculous sum but if it's for the right CB then it wouldn't be that crazy in the scheme of things.

That isnt ridiculous, he could give us 4-5 years of service and leadership in the team as well.
€ 50m for Thiago Silva would be ok in my book. Its the going rate for the one of the world's best defenders.

We paid £30M for Luke Shaw.

Do you run up massive card debts by any chance?

Another player, like Strootman, we could have got for peanuts a year or two ago.

9/10 fans on here deemed him not good enough then as me and only a handful of others sang his praises.... Its that old chestnut...charge top whack for something and people consider it top of the line. Or get a Dutch coach and if he thinks Strootman is good enough the followers worship.

Do Manchester United have any interest in Aymeric Laporte or Nicolás Otamendi?

GUILLEM SAYS: Valencia think that Manchester United will pay the £38.2m buy-out clause in the summer for Nicolás Otamendi. United have already offered £27m and Valencia think they’ll improve on that offer, so the club are preparing for it.

either he's just bullshitting or it means Hummels is staying at Dortmund. we don't sign 2 CBs.

The only thing I'd be afraid the top one is going to do is steal my Bon Iver albums and make me a skinny soy latte instead of an Americano.

I do not, I just want to compete on a level playing field as the rest of the big clubs.
If we were more ruthless in the transfer market in the last few years the club wouldn't have to play catch up now.

Because he's a teen, not a 30 year old. Shaw can give us 10 years of service

In a couple of years Silva will most likely fall off like most other players his age, so even if he did play until 34 it wouldnt be as a top CB

PAying 50m for CBs doesnt make you catch up...it makes you fall further behind!!

It isnt really as generic as that at all, depends on the player in question. I'd pay that for Varane in an instant even though he's a CB. Whether Otamendi is worth that much, not too sure, havent seen him play enough.
