Otamendi individual highlights in his man of the match performance in Valencia's 2-1 win over Real Madrid in Jan

Someone mentioned a "smaller Vidic" and he certainly played like it on the day

He's not tall for a CB but he has a good leap in the air, similar to Tim Cahill, is a very good header and he's comfortable on the ball.

I've only seen him a few times in the past year but he seems to spend an awful lot of time trying to win free kicks which worries me from a centre half

I think its apt to compare him with Roberto Ayala, who wasnt the tallest either but always managed to outleap opponents. Another Argentine top defender who played for Valencia

How good is he on the ball? I imagine van Gaal would want someone better than our current bunch at playing in possession, so what's he like?

Nothing special, just a competant passer able to take the ball out and find teammates

Super Deporte say that at the Elche match, which Otamendi scored in, there was an official sent by Manchester United. The man in question was Carlos Ruiz, who Super Deporte say has worked for the Premier League club for years. It's his job to compile final reports ahead of a further push to sign Otamendi and it could be the situation that Ruiz's words will determine whether Manchester United simply go ahead and pay the player's €50m buyout clause. That works out to be around £36m.

Other reports state he's very happy at valencia and only interested in a prem. move due to the money. He can do one.

What else would you expect. Valencia are doing very well at the moment, and they've no reason to want to sell. They're in line to offer Champions League football next season. The player is obviously settled there, so the only chance we have of getting him is offering big $$$. If he's an improvement on Evans/Jones (pretty hard not to be), then I'd go for it.

Is Carlos Ruiz our Spanish scout then?

I've got to say I haven't really seen enough of Otamendi to have an opinion of him, is he any good?

Meh, if he turns us down because he's happy at Valencia and doesn't want to move then fair enough. We can't just take whoever we want without fail, and that's a pretty decent reason. It's nice to see a footballer settled, happy and not looking to force a move just for a bigger paycheck.

He's a RCB, if we bought him then one of Jones and Smalling surely would be sold. It's someone that can compete for the LCB spot that we need.

Jones and Evans have played on the left side. I am sure Smalling could do the same. It should not be that big of a deal.

Evans is two footed, he's only played a right footed player at LCB twice and that was because he's had zero option as everyone else was out.

Then he needs to have zero option more often, because its all in his head

He's 63, I very much doubt he'll change his ways now. That's why this signing would make no sense to me as it's a lack of competition for Rojo we need.

Chelsea have 3 right footed CBs(4 in you count Ivanovic), Real Madrid's 3 main CBs are also right footed. Both are able to manage. This LCB, RCB crap would cause more problems than it would actually fix.

It's not me that needs convincing, he's always had that quirk regarding CB's.

Terry plays LCB. He is very strong on his left. A lot like Evans

i think it was Demichelis with Badstuber?

This conversation caused me to do a bit of research and according to Whoscored Van Buyten/Demechelis was the most used CB pairing during the season they won the double under him.

I truly don't know mate @Balu
The most used combination in the first season was Badstuber leftback, Demichelis left centerback and van Buyten right centerback. Lahm rightback. The second season, Badstuber usually played left centerback.

Thanks mate, is Demichelis two footed or all right?

I don't remember him passing a lot with his left foot. But it was obvious that van Gaal's longterm plan was always Badstuber in that position. No idea what centerbacks we would have targeted on the transfer market if we didn't have him.

Wasn't one of the problems he had with the board the fact that he did not after another CB in the transfer market?

Not really, no. Breno was expected to return to the team after his injury and everyone had still high hopes that he'd fulfill his potential. Sadly it didn't work out that way, but going into the season with Demichelis, Badstuber, van Buyten and Breno wasn't really seen as a problem. At least it wasn't a problem until Demichelis and van Gaal started fighting and Demichelis was kicked out of the squad and then sold in January.

Ah I see, do you think it was more a needs must than a choice by LvG though? It just seems he is very adamant about this right and left footed CB's thing.

Yeah, he definitely prefers to have a left footed left centerback. I'd be surprised if he bought a centerback who isn't comfortable with his left foot to play there. But then, it seems to be he's a bit more pragmatic and less stubborn this season than he was with us, so who knows.

That's a ringing endorsement if ever I've heard one
